New Fiction Wednesday

Some new fiction for your consideration! I'm looking forward to reading this one...

SHADES OF MORNING

By Marlo Schalesky

Published by Waterbrook-Multnomah Publishers

Shades of Morning is Marlo's third "Love Story with a Twist" (think a Nicolas Sparks type love story with an M. Night Shyamalan type twist!).

A BIT ABOUT THE BOOK:

Marnie Wittier has life just where she wants it. Quiet. Peaceful. No drama. A long way away from her past. In the privacy of her home, she fills a box with slips of paper...

Spending Time With Characters

As I mentioned before, I'm taking a little time off between projects to refresh. I'm reading more, and just yesterday went to a book club meeting. We read The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, which we all enjoyed even though most of us couldn't remember the title correctly when anyone else asked what we were reading these days. Wonderful characters, fresh, amusing voice, a few surprises along the way and a satisfying end. One of the things everyone agreed upon was that the chara...

7 Grounds for the Grind

At the risk of admitting I sometimes sound like an old geezer (can a woman be a geezer?) I'm going to share part of a conversation I recently had with my husband. We were talking about some of the differences between young people and older ones, and even to me we sounded every bit like the older generation we've somehow become. Unearthing a lost memory may cause her to lose everything she holds dear. but could it also set her free?

Practice

This past weekend my husband was talking to our son about various life experiences and a story came up from his childhood. As a boy, my husband was crazy about playing sports. Baseball and basketball, mainly, but he loved other sports, too — almost anything he had the opportunity to play, he loved.

Fifth grade was the first time they didn't accept everyone who tried out for a spot on the basketball team. My husband was a late-bloomer as far as size went, but what he lacked in size he made up f...

Contest Season

I'm not actually sure there is a "season" to contests, but every once in a while I like to post something about contests for writers, in particular contests that are open to unpublished authors. Having entered contests first as an unpublished writer, then as a published one, also having judged and then coordinated, I've had pretty wide experience. I can honestly say one thing: the results might be unpredictable, but if you have a realistic attitude about them going into it, they can be worthw...
