movie/dvd watching
Now that I've finished Pushing Daisies (which I will re-watch at some point when I receive the second season as my promised Xmas gift from friends this year) I've been watching the third season of Dexter-the first two discs (7 episodes, I think) Friday and and last night. I find it interesting as Dexter works out his own code of ethics, which are evolving from what his father Harry taught him. And there's some very moving stuff in this season.

Luke Jerram glass sculptures of disease
These transparent glass sculptures of pathogenic viruses were created to contemplate the global impact of each disease and to consider how the doctoring of scientific imagery affects our visualisation of phenomena. This according to Luke Jerram, the artist (who is, by the way, colorblind), is how the viruses actually look, although they're usually colorized when depicted.

Save the Dragons! and the furry friends
Author Dave Freer is emigrating from South Africa to Australia. One wrinkle, though, is that his furry sidekicks cannot make the journey without a rather huge layout of cash on Dave's part (a large part is that they will all have to be quarantined for six months).
To raise funds, he is posting Chapters of Save the Dragons here.
If you feel like making a donation, please click on it and help him out. The alternative is to abandon some furry friends, many of which came from shelters to ...

Teaching Clarion West in 2010
I'll be back teaching Clarion West a year earlier than normal (I'm usually asked to teach every five years, but this time it's going to be only four) along with Michael Bishop, Maureen McHugh, Nnedi Okorafor, Graham Joyce, and Ian McDonald. I'll be there the fifth week.
