Are all Elfae Descended from the Tuatha de Danann?
“. . . while we love the Tuatha de Danann and their legends, they are not the only source of elvish/faerie culture. . . . Our own elvish point of view holds that the source of our elfae peoples came from the stars, descended into manifestation here on Earth and first arose in the time when there was just one continent Pangaea. We were not in humanoid form exactly at that time. We were still in our etheric forms and had as yet not descended fully into material manifestation but we were here awaiting our moment.”
The Tuatha de Danann were said to have come to ancient Ireland from the direction of the North out of a mist or clouds. Some people interpret that to mean that they came from outer space and thus associate them with the Anunnaki, who were gods of Middle Eastern peoples. Some say they were related to the Scythians that came from the steppes of Northern Iran and that vicinity and traveled across Europe and sailed out from Norway and came down upon Ireland from the North, perhaps from the Faroe islands or Hebrides. We could consider that therefore they were related to the Picts or Pict Sidhe, pixies of Albann/Alba/Caledonia/Scotland and came over from that land. Since these were pre-historic peoples for the most part, and the Tuatha are seen as a mythological race, we have no way of knowing for certain.
However, as attractive as the idea of all fae and elfin folk being related or descended from the elfae folk of Ireland, the British Isles, Breton and Europe overall, it should be clear that while the names for various elfae differ in different lands and that sometimes their description varies, there are beliefs concerning the existence of we elfae folk over most of the world. And these existed prior to the migration of European folk around the world.
So, clearly, while we love the Tuatha de Danann and their legends, they are not the only source of elvish/faerie culture. Some say that we all came from Lemurian before it disappeared beneath the rising seas (see Realms of the Ring Lords by Laurence Gardner) but then Lemuria is as much of a myth, in the eyes of most modern folk, perhaps even more so, than we elfae folk and the Tuatha.
According to modern scientists, as best as they can determine, modern humans all came out of Africa ages ago, although that is sometimes debated. And we modern ‘great apes’ of Homosapien variety are various combinations of Cro-Magnons, Neanderthals and Denisovans and possibly other ‘extinct’ races as well. Our own elvish point of view holds that the source of our elfae peoples came from the stars, descended into manifestation here on Earth and first arose in the time when there was just one continent Pangaea. We were not in humanoid form exactly at that time. We were still in our etheric forms and had as yet not descended fully into material manifestation but we were here awaiting our moment.
But the truth is, of course, we have no facts to support this. We just know that our culture in various forms can be found in different places among various ethnic peoples around the world and if there is a single source for elfae peoples and the legends and lore about us, it came before we diversified and migrated around the globe. We are basically an artistic scientific people and we may amuse ours’elves with various ideas and the visions of our philosophers and sages (such as Tolkien) but we will await further evidence from the discoveries that our scientific kin may make in the future before we settle upon definite scientific theories about us.
As wonderful as the Tuatha de Danann are, we doubt that we all, everyone of us, originated from them or from the Scythians or any other group of which we are currently aware. It seems logical that we had a central source, however that is not necessarily so. Still, if we had to claim to have descended from one group, we’d Silver Elves would be delighted to claim the Tuatha as our ancestors. And since they came from the North in mystical, magical Mists, well, that is rather perfect, isn’t it? After all, the passage to and from Faerie is nearly always associated with mists.
Although, the fact that they migrated to Ireland, in itself, would tend to indicate that they are not the source for all elfae folk but may have come from the source. Other elfae surely migrated from the Source (shall we call it Faerie?), wherever that is, and ventured and settled elsewhere. We might surmise therefore that other elfae folk migrated from the source/Faerie or, in some cases stayed there, and thus the Tuatha would not be the ancestors of all of us, but surely some of us. Others of us are descended from those other elfae people, which as we’ve indicated, are a vastly varied lot.

We hope you enjoy reading this excerpt which is part of an oracle reading we did for the Elfae community (yes that is you dear Kindred and Friends), from: The Faerie Song Oracle: The Elven Way of Singing Down Magic of the Fae and here is the message it gives for us all:
“2.1. FLOWERS OF FAERIE, RAE DO.”
“The Flowers of Faerie are like Faerie Food. If you inhale the flowers of Faerie you will be transformed and, more than likely, you will have Faerie in your soul forever. In Hope Mirrlees’ novel Lud-in-the Mist, consuming the Flowers of Faerie made one wish to dance and sing and shout with joy and run off into the wilds of Faerie. Such happiness is quite understandable and acceptable among we elfae folk but to the normal people it seems as though one has gone insane for being so joyous. They will look askance at you and wonder whether you are all there or if you are, indeed, ‘off with the faeries’.”
“If you receive the Flowers of Faerie in response to a question posed to the oracle, then know that something will come into your life that will give you a bit of ecstatic joy. More than that, this oracle says you should experience your delight fully. You don’t need to hide it and you don’t need to be concerned about what other people may think. You are not one of them, and if you ever were, you are not of that world anymore. You are now a part of Faerie and shall ever after be. You are developing a new and greater understanding of your life, the world and your place in it. Once you really see and understand, you cannot go back. Isn’t that wonderful? Knowledge and experience master ignorance. You can’t unknow your new found understanding.”

The Elves of Lyndarys is an often humorous novel about a young man’s struggle to mature and develop himself, his magic and his identity as he encounters and explores the modern pagan and otherkin communities and happens to encounter real elves, slowly coming to realize as he does so that he may not be a man at all but one of the elven. He is confronted through his journey not only by his own incredulity about his encounters and his inner conflict with what he has been taught to believe is reality and his actual experience but also by his personal prejudices and false assumptions. He comes to discover not only that the magic of Faerie is real but further that the Elven Way, as presented by his mentors, offers him a means of traveling the misty paths to magical and mystical enlightenment.

By the Powers of Faerie, Now and Forevermore: A Daily Magic of Invoking Faerie and Elfin Over a Year’s Time is a book of daily affirmations designed to help all elfae kindred to attune to Elfin and Faerie and our path on the Elven Way on a daily basis. Staying on the elven path is often difficult with the mundane world constantly distracting us away from our elven nature and spiritual purposes. These daily affirmations aid us in staying centered within our elfin soulful spirit and upon our magical intentions to manifest Elfin-Faerie in our lives.
How to use these Elfin affirmations . . . . . Some of our kindred have requested that we write this book and so we have. These affirmations are meant to be used one a day, each day for a year’s time, 365 days, and for a leap year, a year and a day. There is a tradition in modern witchcraft that one must study for a year and a day before being initiated as a witch. However, if you happen to miss a day or two, or even a week or two doing your affirmations, don’t worry about it. Just continue where you left off, when you start again. We Silver Elves have used each of these affirmations ours’elves over a year’s time and found them quite helpful. We have previously said in our books that “The world is a chaotic storm and Elfin is its calm center.” These affirmations will help you to stay in this calm center to manifest Elfin in your life.
We have found in our lives that when we are stressed by various things, such as having to move and find a new place or overall difficulties in our environment, that daily affirmations such as these help us keep a positive outlook as we deal with whatever situation or complications we are encountering. So, while these affirmations are designed to be used over a year’s time, you can also, if you wish, use a divinatory method such as Bibliomancy (opening the book at random, pointing your finger without looking at the page and reading the one on the page it points to) to find the affirmation that will be the most relevant and helpful for you with a particular situation or life issue any given day.
How the affirmations are arranged in this book . . . . . You will see that we have divided the affirmations into 13 sections of 28 days (each section is a chapter), and an extra section that has two days. An elven calendar, in our memory would be rather like an Asian moon month year and would have 13 moon months in it, each with 28 days, which would add up to 364 days a year. And in addition, it would have an extra day each year to make the 365 days in a year and another extra day every fourth year on leap year. In reality, it takes 27 days, 7 hours, and 43 minutes for our beloved Elfin Moon to complete one full orbit around Earth. This is referred to as the sidereal month, which is measured by our Moon’s position in relationship to the “fixed” stars. On the other hand, it takes the Moon about 29.5 days to complete one cycle of phases, calculated from new Moon to new Moon. We have simply averaged it out to be 28 days for the convenience of this book. We could have done 12 months of 29 days, but that gives us 348 days, which doesn’t work as well. And we happen to be fond of the number 13 anyway. For normal folk, it is considered unlucky, but for we elfae folk it is an especially lucky and magical number.
We’ve also added under each affirmation suggestions for the colors and magical instruments that you may wish to use in performing these invocations, either physically wearing or holding the magical instrument or just visualizing them is often best for your magic. These are simply suggestions and you are welcome to use your own intuition and creativity to find the right magical tools to use, if you wish to use any at all.
Let’s begin together, here is the affirmation for Day 1:
“I purify mys’elf, my environment and my life, removing all obstacles between me and my true s’elf, opening the way to Faerie and the establishment of its healing magics in my life. I clear mys’elf of all negative energies, habits, behaviors and associations that block the awakening of my true elfae nature and that would keep Faerie and its magic from entering and uplifting my life. I remove all doubt from my heart and mind that would prevent the entry of Faerie magic into my life and I hereby declare clearly and unequivocally my intention of becoming more of my true elfae being and in doing so awaken the faerie energy within mys’elf and to draw Faerie to me, my environment and all who are associated with me making my life more peaceful, calm and attractive to luck and healing. By the powers of Faerie, now and forevermore.”
We Silver Elves are fond of the number 13, so here is also the affirmation for Day 13:
“I unite with the powers Faerie both within and beyond mys’elf, integrating my consciousness and s’elf awareness and becoming aware of the entirety of my being working in harmony toward the fulfillment of my destiny as an elvish spirit manifesting in the material world to bring about the actualization of Faerie upon the Earth and among the Stars. My inner focus and harmony enable me to perform vast feats of magic and thaumaturgy transforming mys’elf and the world around me for the betterment of all. By the powers of Faerie, now and forevermore.”

“Faerie is a fourth dimensional realm;
it includes the third dimensional realm but extends beyond it,
so we elfae can see them,
but they can only see part of what we are.”

Are the Therians and other animal folk magical beings?
There are a number of Furries and Therians who, while they relate to various animals as their kintype, say that they do not do magic. And there are some individuals that we Silver Elves have encountered who do not accept Therians and Furries as being Otherkin, or a part of the Faerie realms at all because they don’t do magic nor do they see them as having a magical Nature.
From our Silver Elves point of view, the decision to do magic or not is, of course, a personal decision and depends utterly upon the individual. This is also the case with whether one considers themselves to be Otherkin or not. It is not for others to say if they are Otherkin. That is totally a personal decision for the individual as to their own leanings and inclinations. If they are true to their own s’elves and natures, they cannot go wrong. At the same time, all of Nature is magical as far as we Silver Elves are concerned, especially wild nature, and to have any association with Faerie or Elfin is to increase one’s magical nature. Our sisters of the Elf Queen’s Daughters used to say back in the mid 1970s that we elves do not do magic so much as we are magic. This is surely in keeping with our elven tendency to have enchantment as our primary form of magic.
As it is, we Silver Elves are, de facto, magical beings since we are elves, but we also do magic of various sorts. And yet, every elf is magic and whether they do magic intentionally or not, every act that we do is magic. Only instead of a magic like picking up a wand, which is an intentional act and requires a decision to do it, being magic is rather like breathing. It is automatic. It just happens. We can try to control our breathing. Some yogic practices do this, but as long as our bodies are alive as a whole, we breath automatically. We don’t have to think about it. We don’t even have to be awake. Magic happens.
So it is that any Therian or Furry that is in Faerie or Elfin is a magical being. They may not do magic consciously but their entire being is magic by association and thus, in that way, they are Otherkin. The mere fact that they associate their essential nature with a particular animal, in itself, tends them toward Otherkin nature. At the very least, they are not an ordinary person in that they do not consider themselves human in spirit. And that also denotes an essentially Otherkin being.
It is not just we Silver Elves who associate animals of various kinds with magic. All aboriginal peoples of which we know looked upon animals as being magic. And many if not most of them had individual totems and clan totems. They associated thems’elves with bears, foxes, wolves, panthers and various other creatures because they believed that this association increased their own powers, thus magic, because those animals were powerful and were symbolic of their own power and spiritual instinctual knowledge.
As a matter of fact, one of us Silver Elves remembers a past life of being dog in the wild and a perfect moment in that life of feeling completely in the Now, illuminating the intense beauty of life itself. Drawing upon this type of past life animal experience and awareness into one’s present life brings great empowerment and thus magic.
This tendency to associate with animals as a representative of one’s being and powers can still be found today in sports, in which a team might be called the cougars, or wolverines or eagles or other such animals. And it can also be found in countries, with their associated totems such as the Russian Bear, the U.S. Eagle and the British Lion. This is not to say that all countries have these associations but a great many still do.
All these associations are symbols of a country’s and therefore a people’s power. And power, beloved, is magic. It may be used for good or ill, but it is still magic. When someone says they want the power to do this or that, they are saying they want the magic to accomplish their desires. And if you say, ‘I want the magic to fulfill my dreams,’ you are saying you wish to have the power to make your dreams come true.
To link ones’elf to a particular animal, to feel that one is that animal in essence, is to feel an association to that animal’s being, which is its nature, its energy and its power, which is to say, its Magic (see our The Silver Elves book, Elfin Totem Animals: An Elven Oracle for Finding Your Power Familiar). And when you hang out with elves then, naturally, magic enters the equation without even having to think about it. It’s just like breathing. So, take a breath and inhale the power and magic that is Elfin and Faerie and just be whoever you wish to be, which is who you truly are, which is what the Therians and Furries are doing. And that, in itself, is a great magic.

We Silver Elves are happy to announce the publication of our book Finding Faerie:
Answers to Questions About Being an Elf and Following the Elven Path, Volume 8!!!
In FINDING FAERIE, we Silver Elves continue with a volume 8 of our question and answer series addressing numerous questions about elves and faeries and about living the Elven Way. In this book we address with an elven perspective some questions that have been posed to us throughout our 45+ years of following the elven spiritual path and sharing with the world that we are elves in soulful spirit that have incarnated in human bodies.
Finding Faerie explores questions often asked about the magical realms of Faerie and Elfin; the types and characteristics of elves, elfae (a word we Silver Elves coined some decades ago to include elves and all other fae of the Faerie Realm) lifestyle, values and culture; Faerie realm magic and magical studies; The Faeries and Otherkin; and some miscellaneous topics from an elven perspective. Some of the specific questions answered in Finding Faerie are (there are over 100 altogether in the book): Does time flow differently in Faerie? Is there evil in Elfin and Faerie? Does the moon have its own Faerie Realm? Are we elfae descended from nature spirits, the dead or minor gods of antiquity? Do some elfae live in the sky realms? Is it a law of Faerie that if a normal human offers we elfae a bargain, we have to accept it no matter how poor or unjust the trade may be? Is there a Wheel of Fortune in Faerie that only kindness turns? Are the words of power in Faerie the words of love? Is there one king over all kings in Faerie? If a human eats human food after eating faerie food and stops eating faerie food, can they escape from Faerie? Are there as some say five branches to the elven race, being aquatic, gray, high, dark and wood? Do sea elves live beneath the sea? Do we elves have high born and low born? Do we elves have a keen sense of hearing? Are we elves able to communicate with each other telepathically? Are we elves animal whisperers? Do elves sleep? Do we elves become adults after a hundred years? Do we elves have infravision? Do we elfae have the power to make ours’elves invisible? Are we elfae compulsive dancers? Do we elves smoke? Are elven vortexes (covens) hierarchical? What do we think of those elfae who wish to ‘war’ on humanity? Do we elves like to travel around in flocks? Do crosses banish us Elven? Do we elfae tend to live in bands instead of as couples? Are all elves proficient at swordplay and archery? Are we elfae notably conservative and opposed to innovation? Can you break curses with an elven star? How do we Silver Elves cast magical spells? Is one of the secrets of Faerie magic to wish well? How do you know when a sign or omen is genuine? How do you keep your magic from having negative effects on others? What is the difference between Willing and Wishing? Are we elves magic by nature or do we need to do magic? How do you recognize when a stranger is also otherkin? Do faeries die? Does a four-leaf clover allow one to see elfae? If a tree sprite leaves its tree and walks among humans will it become human, unable ever to return? Are the Therians and other animal folk magical beings? Is Sylvan the language of dryads and pixies? Are elfae older than the oldest gods of mythological record? Did we elves teach the trees to speak? Are we elfae the caretakers and guardians of the dead? Are those who manifested as elfae and then leave the Elven Path and never return really elfae?
Most often, a person has questions as one tries: to decide if one is ones’elf an elf, faerie or is some otherkin; to understand what it means to be an elf and how one might know of one’s elfin nature; to understand one’s experience of having an Elven Awakening; to determine how elven magic is alike or different from that performed by other spiritual groups; and to learn about how elves live and relate to mankind and otherkin. In the first seven volumes of this question and answer book series, we covered numerous questions on the above topics, including a section about which of our Silver Elves’ books to read on various interests about the Elven Way, our magic and about being elfin. So, if you are curious about modern elves and faeries, particularly about The Silver Elves (as we do not speak for all elves as elves are quite a varied and independent folk), then you will surely find many of your questions answered in Finding Faerie. If you do not see all the questions that you have about the elves addressed in this volume 8, be sure and check the first seven books in this series, as your questions may well be included in those books (see (also see The Magical Realms of Elfin, volume 1; Manifesting Elfin, volume 2; The New Dawn of Elfin, volume 3; Visions of Elfin, volume 4; Elfin Rising, volume 5; and Illuminating Faerie, volume 6); and Reflections on the Faerie and Elfin Folk, volume 7).

Is there a connection between the words Ferry and Fairy?
Fairy (or Faerie) and Ferry are homonyms in as much as they have the same pronunciation but a different meaning. However, while their meaning is clearly distinct, Faerie or Fairy (spelled with a capital “F”) or in some cases Faërie, indicating a place or realm and a people (generally spelled with a lower case “f”) and Ferry denoting a boat for passage across water, we Silver Elves still sense a harmony between them.
When one of us elves was very young, we used to take the ferry across the Chesapeake Bay to visit our grandparents, usually very late at night, and that was a bit mysterious and magical. Although, we were quite wee elves at that time. We were at that age when nearly everything is mysterious and magical. There is some lore that states that we elfae folk cannot cross over water. The same thing is sometimes said regarding vampires, but Dracula overcame this limitation when he traveled to England from Transylvania (meaning across the forest) by sleeping in a coffin that contained the soil of his native land. Surely, if we elfae were limited in our ability to cross running water, we would have figured out we could just put some soil in our pockets or the bottom on our shoes to cross streams and rivers, etc.
And what about mermaids and nixies and selkies and sea sprites and other fae of the waters? Clearly, they can cross water and the selkies, taking on humanoid form can cross land as well. So, that bit of lore doesn’t seem to actually apply to us. Although, it may come from a sense of territoriality, since rivers, streams, etc. were commonly used as territorial boundaries in the past and even in some cases today. If we are seen as being like many animals and like men as well for that matter, not being able to cross running water may indicate that we’d be passing out of our own clan territory if we did so. It wasn’t that we couldn’t cross the water but that conflict would surely develop if we did.
You can find this idea of we elfae having territories in such works as Sylvia Townsend Warner’s The Kingdoms of Elfin, in Marie Brennan’s Onyx Court series, The War for the Oaks by Emma Bull and many of Holly Black’s books about we elfae folk as well as other books, many of which follow the legends of we elfae as having winter and summer courts that are in perpetual, as well as seasonal, conflict. Notice how, in The Fellowship of the Ring, the Nazgul who were men who had become powerful dark spirits, in other words had been transformed into Unseelie fae, were unable to cross the river and enter the Realm of Rivendell due to that elvish realm’s powerful magic that repelled them with the waters of the river rising and flooding them away.
On the other hand, we should be aware that we fae folk are often associated with death and in some Celtic lore, Faerie is the land of the dead where people went to live until they died there and then returned to another life on Earth. And it is common as well in mythology for those who die to be seen as being ferried (faerie-d?) across a river to be taken to the land of the dead. We find this prominently in Greek mythology, which also gives us tales of fauns, satyrs, dryads, nixies and myriad other fae folk. But note also Hel, the goddess of the dead in Norse lore, and her boat of the dead that her father Loki uses in the battle of Ragnarok when the trolls, giants and other ancient gods confront the warrior gods of the Aesir and attempt to overthrow them. And notice, also, the tradition among the Norse of sending warriors to the other world in a burning boat, which would be a type of ferry in a sense as well. You can also find, in the beliefs of the Dayak people of Borneo, a ship that conveys people to the land of the dead and a boat that conveys souls to the land of the dead in Egyptian lore.
But even more germane here, we should consider that when King Arthur died or was severely wounded (the tales differ in this regard), he was ferried to Avalon on a small boat by the women/witches/fae of that island to be healed, one of whom it is said was his sister Morgan la Fay (Morgan the Fae).
Water is traditionally symbolic of the mystery of creation and thus of birth, death and resurrection. However, it is also associated with purification and redemption and with fertility and growth. Carl Jung viewed it as a symbol for the unconscious elements of the psyche. The ferry crosses over the water conveying one to another land, a land that is separated by water or the unconscious or by death. It is not too much of a stretch to presume that it may very well be we elfae folk, we faerie, who do the ferrying. To enter Faerie, one must ferry or cross the unconscious realms of being, the realms of the unknown and be transformed (as death often represents transformation) and arise again in a new land. A land that is not only different from whence we came, but in which we are changed as well. The portal to Faerie then would be a ferry. Which is to say, to enter Faerie we must be transformed. And this is to say transformed as soulful spirits. A transformation of our inner nature or, in truth, a purification of our nature so we become more of who were truly are.
When we die, we change our bodies, but our spirits remain the same. This is one of the meanings of the concept of karma. We carry who we are from one incarnation to another. The very purpose of coming into material manifestation is that here we can consciously transform, hone and empower our spirits. To enter Faerie, we need to transform as spirits, as individuals, as people. Changing bodies is transubstantiation, the altering of the body and its essence. To enter Faerie, we need to change who we truly are, not necessarily what we look like. To enter Faerie, we must become faerie, which is to say more truly fae. Then Faerie will recognize us as one of its own and embrace us readily.
It is rather, in that way, like buying a new car. One can get a totally new vehicle, but that doesn’t make one a better driver. Getting into Faerie isn’t about getting a new vehicle but about becoming a better driver/enchanter. One that is better able to perceive the Faerie world and all of us who are a part of it. And then one discovers, as we and others of our kind have through the ages, that we have been here all along.

Do faeries die? And do we elves grow trees that never die?
(photo above of Zardoa of The Silver Elves with a faerie on his shoulder)
The question of “do faeries die?” was posed in one of our Silver Elves Facebook groups and the answer, as Tolkien pointed out so astutely concerning we elven in general, is both yes and no. All things material die, which is to say change form. Death is merely a recognition that our material form has transformed. Faeries, in as much as they have material bodies, of necessity will die or change form. The material world is an illusion in the sense that it is formed from energy that takes different shapes. The shapes change but the energy that composes it remains, for energy can neither be created nor destroyed, it just changes shape. So, in so far as we are energy, we do not die, we just alter our appearance.
Therefore, the energy that composes faeries, and everything else for that matter, does not die. Although, it does shape shift, which is something we elfae are noted for doing. And what is shape shifting but changing form? And we’ve already noted that death is changing form, although, usually a complete or radical change of form. We change form like we change clothes. For we are spirits who inhabit bodies, not spirits who are bodies.
However, neither are we the energy that we use to create bodies. At least not in its grossest most material form. We are the consciousness that uses energy to create bodies that expresses the nature and current state of our spirit, our evolution and the lessons we undertake to become more and better (see our book Beyond Death: Ascending towards the Faerie Realms through Progressive Incarnations). And yet, that consciousness is a subtle thing. It seems to die as well. Every time we sleep or become ‘unconscious’ our awareness seems to die and yet, in a more subtle form, it still exists. We are, in many ways, the unconscious striving to become aware of itself and the world around it, which is really to say aware of other spirits and their consciousness.
In that sense, we sort of die, as do faeries, as we recede into our unconscious states of being. And yet, we still are. We wake up from sleep and despite those who think we only live once, we wake up from a change of bodies as well. Although, in a sense, they are right for we do only have one life or only live once, it is just that we have numerous forms, incarnations and bodies that are part of that eternal life.
The essence of our being, which again is to say consciousness, is ephemeral. It is not material and it arises from the great nothingness, which is space in its ethereal form and represents pure potentiality. Our consciousness arises from the unconscious or non-conscious from sleep. We awaken. And this is true of elves, faeries and all other beings. In that sense, we never die, we just sleep at times, change bodies and awaken again later. So, no, faeries do not die but they do change form.
Take the fact that faeries were once seen as being the same as elves are viewed to be today. Rather like Tolkien portrays us. This is also true of dwarves (of Dwarfs) and other elfae beings (see The World Guide to Gnomes, Fairies, Elves and Other Little People by Thomas Keightley and The Hidden History of Elves & Dwarfs by Claude Lecouteux). Elves, fae, faeries, dwarfs and other terms for we otherworldly folk were all used interchangeable by many peoples over the course of time. At one time, fae and faeries were not seen as having wings and were imagined pretty much as elves are imagined today. In time in the lore, faeries not only developed wings, as an idea, but also diminished into very small and sometimes ethereal beings. While in the lore, we elves acquired pointed ears and are also sometimes seen as being about the size of toddlers or even smaller. Many thanks to Tolkien for bringing us back to our actual size.
Of course, modern faeries love their faerie wings and we elves love our pointed ears. No doubt we will all transform in popular imagination even more as time goes on, which is a change of our etheric form in a sense, if not in our actual bodies. We are in the process of individuating and certainly in time we can expect more and different types of elves, faeries and others to develop as we become more and more our unique s’elves (see our book series Elf Tribes; Faerie, Fae and Otherkin Tribes; Elves, Faeries, Fae and Otherkin Tribes; Elfae Tribes; and Elfin, Fae and Otherkin Tribes).
So, yes, we change and, yes, our bodies die and transform but still we are eternally elves and faeries even though we are also known as and embrace ours’elves variously as Star Seeds, Star Children, Freaks, Hippies, Bohemians, Space Gypsies and a variety of other names. And we continue on, ever changing and transforming, for that is the way of the Universe and is surely The Elven Way as well.
In the book Return of the King, by J. R. R. Tolkien, Legolas says that elves grow trees that would never die. Of course, we modern elves don’t have the power to grow trees that never die, although we surely wish we did. After all, our own physical bodies are transitory and prone to aging and dying as we have explained above. And, let’s face it, most trees would be likely to live much longer than we do. That is if Men didn’t go around in some sort of greedy jealousy over that fact and an obstinate dismissal of the value of trees as living beings and murder them regularly much to our horror and chagrin.
For we elves do adore the trees in their varied and wondrous forms. And though their bodies do tend to live, when men don’t chop them down, much longer than we, we find that fact comforting. We surely wish them to live forever in their current bodies for it gives us hope of eventually doing the same.
If we did have the power to create things that never die, we would surely start with our children and loved ones. And then, of course, ours’elves so we could share in the joy of their lives and they in ours. However, trees would certainly come in next along with our familiars, cats, dogs, etc. and every other sort of wondrous creature such as the birds in the varied forms and the deer and other beings that we admire and could make friends with. So, yes, our friends would be near the top of the list. All our friends of various kinds, species and manifestations. And we are a friendly people.
Alas, while Tolkien’s fictional elves could grow trees that never died, we actual and real elves have a difficult time keeping our house plants alive. At least that’s true for we Silver Elves and according to Nicolas De Vere in his book The Dragon Legacy is true for most elves. Although, as is surely the case with almost everything concerning elves, there are surely exceptions, and exceptions to the exceptions. We’ve said it before but it bears repeating, we elves are an exceptional people, which we also mean weird, eccentric and individualistic while being very group oriented at the same time.
Most lore about we elfae peoples, apart from Tolkien, doesn’t present the idea that we can grow trees that never die. Often, we can shape trees in various ways to form homes, or at least some of us can, which makes us consider the idea that Luther Burbank may have been elfae, in fact, he definitely seemed so. However, there is little in the lore that we’ve encountered that has our trees being immortal, although often we ours’elves are portrayed to be so.
At the same time, there is much in the lore that would indicate that Faerie its’elf is immortal and that everything in Faerie is touched by that immortality and shares in it as long as it or they are in Faerie. So, in Faerie the trees would never die for it is the Undying Realm. And while we elfae folk are not always viewed as being immortal, we are frequently seen to experience greater longevity than most of the race of Men.
There is just something about being elven that tends to extend our lives. This may not be true in every particular case, but it seems to be true overall. Perhaps it’s our diet, or the love we feel for each other and our love of the trees and other beings, or our happiness and joy and being together and in being elfin or all of the above. Being elfae seems to have the effect of extending our lives and being in Elfin and Faerie moves us, according to the lore, toward immortality. Therefore, as we live our lives as the elfae we know ours’elves to truly be (despite the opinions of those who don’t really believe in us in the first place) and as we create our own ealds thereby manifesting Elfin and Faerie in the world, we are increasing our chances of living longer and eventually in that way creating immortal bodies that will harmonize with our already immortal spirits.
And, if we are wrong about this, well, it’s worth trying anyway. It’s fun to do so and fun is life giving. It’s magic, and magic extends our lives when we do it with love. And, it is far better, at least from our elvish point of view, than being normal for then we’d languish in ennui and be bored to death. What fun is that?

“They write of Elven Kingdoms
And Elvish Queendoms, too
And clans and mobs
And bands that throb
And all of this we do.
But most of all we’re family
From littlest to big
From wee folk
To the very great
In shiny velvet rig.
And in that magic family
Love does ever reign
Not queen, nor king or mighty chief
But affection never fain.
For friendship ever rules us
And loyalty sincere
And most of all abiding love
For all whom we hold dear.”

Does time flow differently in Faerie?
In The Fellowship of the Ring, when the members of the fellowship are taking sanctuary in the elven realms of Lothlorien, some of them note that time seems to flow differently there but other members of the Fellowship point out that the difference is not actual but subjective. That is to say it is not that time is flowing differently but that it feels different when one is in Elfin or Faerie.
This idea that the Faerie realms move at a different rate of time is quite traditional in Faerie lore, where a person can be in one of the Faerie realms for what seems like days or weeks to them and then return to their normal world to discover that years have passed by. Where has the time flown, is the usual reaction.
And there is some indication, according to the theories of Special Relativity, that time does flow differently in certain instances according to one’s frame of reference and one’s velocity so that time slows near to a stop when one approaches the speed of light. That being the case, we might think that the Faerie realms are somehow vibrating faster than the normal realms of Man. This may, in part, explain how it is that time seems to move so quickly in the realms of men, or at least, why they are always in a hurry to get things done before time runs out on them.
Our sisters of the Elf Queen’s Daughters (see our Silver Elves books titled Elf Magic Mail, volume 1 and 2) sometimes noted that they vibrated at a different rate of speed than the normal folk. This being the case because they were more efficient in some ways and yet more laid back at the same time. And yet, we think this is primarily a matter of a frame of reference than an actual difference between our elvish time or our time in Elfin and that of the normal folk and their world.
The fact is that among we elven, time moves both very quickly and very slowly. On the one hand, there is the idea that time flies when one is having fun and we elves are nearly always having fun so that when one leaves Elfin or Faerie, or Lothlorien for the members of the Fellowship, it seems as though it has happened far more quickly than they would wish. For one most often wishes they could stay in Elfin forever. We know we feel that way, especially when we are with our true kindred.
Simultaneously, when one is in Elfin, one is so absorbed into the energy there that it frequently seems as though time isn’t passing at all. One lives in a sort of timeless bubble insulated from the pressures of the world and its energies that are ever urging one to hurry, hurry, hurry. In the normal world, one is ever rushing about to get nowhere and being ever busy doing nothing of significance while accomplishing very little. It is all, as Shakespeare pointed out, Much Ado About Nothing.
In Elfin, even quiet slow seeming moments are cherished. It all gets done and yet there is no hurry and not much need to accomplish anything save what one desires to do. Sometimes, our artists are filled with passionate energy and most true artist do seem to be elfae types really but mostly we are just cruising along quite delighted to be together. What is more important than that really?
And because we elves are generally calmer about nearly everything than men and the normal folk, we are in less of a hurry and therefore less likely to make mistakes that make everything take longer, having to do it all again. And when we do make mistakes, they are often artistic mistakes that we incorporate into what we are doing. This makes us more efficient for the most part and we often get more done in less time because we are not really in a hurry. It’s a bit of a paradox but then most things concerning Elfin, Faerie and we elfae folk ours’elves are.
So, we are led to conclude that while time doesn’t materially flow differently in Elfin, although that is surely possible in some instances, we do experience time in a different way. We have, for the most part, slowed ours’elves down and thus experience time as moving like a gentle creek flowing calmly toward the river. It is subjective time, certainly, and it takes a shift of perspective to perceive, but then that’s quite a bit of what Elfin, Faerie and magic are all about anyway, experience the world and life in a whole Other way.

Are Elven Vortexes Hierarchical?
“. . . . for us Silver Elves, in particular, and for most elves we know, there is no set hierarchical figure in our social life or magical groups, which is to say in our vortexes, covens or other magical formulations. What we tend to have, however, which is a sort of hierarchy, is the prevalence of charismatic individuals. Although being enchanters for the most part, there are often a good many charismatic individuals among us, unlike cults where there is just one charismatic leader who rules everyone and everything. . . . There are no fixed positions of hierarchy among us, no inherited positions really, there is only manifest charisma that will surely change as others grow into their own true s’Elves, which is inevitable if the elf “in charge” is really doing their job correctly and nurturing the power and energy in everyone that comes to them.”
In Stephen Mace’s Seizing Power he explores the question concerning whether covens, vortexes (elven magical gatherings), lodges or other magical groups need to be hierarchical or whether they are actually better off being run through consensus. We won’t go over his conclusions here, our readers can get his book if they wish thems’elves. Although, we will say we very much like his writings, although they are quite intellectual and may not appeal to everyone. For our own part, we elves enjoy reading authors who are more knowledgeable and intelligent than we currently are, but that may not be the case for everyone. Rather, what we wish to do here is explore our own thoughts on this issue that were provoked by his considerations. Although, we will say that Mace, being a theorist of Chaos Magic and inspired by the works of Austin Osman Spare, is more inclined toward consensus, where possible and practical, than hierarchy.
We elves, despite what tradition and lore says about us, are essentially a consensus folk and even anarchist as people (if you define anarchy in terms of individualistic rather than a miscellaneous group of malcontents wanting to tear everything down, ala The Joker of the Batman world). Consensus is surely the ideal, although we are realistic enough to understand that in some cases, and among some types of elfae, hierarchy is bound to take place. Certainly, the grimlins, goblins, orcs and so forth are more inclined, in our experience, to favor hierarchy, in some cases theocratic hierarchy (grimlins), more than we elves, pixies, brownies and other fae peoples do.
If you went by the traditional lore and many modern stories about us, you’d think that we are all led by kings and queens, etc. But for us Silver Elves, in particular, and for most elves we know, there is no set hierarchical figure in our social life or magical groups, which is to say in our vortexes, covens or other magical formulations. What we tend to have, however, which is a sort of hierarchy, is the prevalence of charismatic individuals. Although being enchanters for the most part, there are often a good many charismatic individuals among us, unlike cults where there is just one charismatic leader who rules everyone and everything. This is not to say that this couldn’t happen among elves but, overall, is less likely to occur because of our strong individual nature. It is simply a rule of thumb to say that those who would follow such a single charismatic leader would only do so until they are developed enough as elven spirits to pilot their own way. It is the effects and leftover indoctrination from the normal world that leads them to follow such leaders. This is much in the way that children are led by their parents until, in fact, they can take care of thems’elves and guide their own lives.
What we have instead is a sort of artistic hierarchy. By this we mean that whoever initiates a project, magical ritual, etc. is the one in charge of it. Those who wish to join in do and those who don’t go elsewhere or do something else. There is an understanding, however, that when elves gather together for a purpose of doing magic for this or that goal that they will cooperate toward the realization of that goal.
Unlike mankind, where the leaders give directions and the workers carry them out, among elves usually, those who do most of the work are also the ones who are in charge. We, however, do consider organizing things as effort and thus would be counted as work, although we are not overly fond of that word and tend to like to think of everything as a form of play. Play, not only in the sense of being playful and having fun, but play in the sense of acting and a performance, which are forms of enchantment.
Back when we were part of the Elf Queen’s Daughters (1970s), our sisters of the Fox River Vortex pointed out that for them, leadership was always a provisional thing. One person or pairing of individuals might guide things for a while and at other times another person among them or pairing would rise to ascendance. Really, it is all about who has the power/energy at a particular time.
It is not impossible that one or two may dominate a vortex for a long time, if they are powerful, knowledgeable and wise but again they must demonstrate that knowledge and wisdom regularly. There are no fixed positions of hierarchy among us, no inherited positions really, there is only manifest charisma that will surely change as others grow into their own true s’elves, which is inevitable if the elf “in charge” is really doing their job correctly and nurturing the power and energy in everyone that comes to them.

We Silver Elves are happy to announce the publication of our newest book: Moon Elves: Their Customs and Their Magic
MOON ELVES: Their Customs and Their Magic is all about moon elves and by the term Moon Elves, we mean elves for whom a relationship with the Moon is an important, but not necessarily exclusive, part of their lifestyle and magic. We Silver Elves, for instance, say we are the elves of moonlight, starlight and the radiance of the forest. Therefore, we could easily call ours’elves Moon Elves, but we could also say we are Star Elves or Starlight Elves, or Forest or Wood Elves, and all that would be true. In Part One of Moon Elves you will find a description of some of the various methods Moon Elves use in their magic. Some of the topics in this book on moon elven culture and magic include: Elven Moon Bathing, Moon Water, Moon Gazing, the Elfin Moon Garden and Moon Garden Herbs, Elven Moon Weddings, Elfin Moon Dancing, Moon Elven Totems and Familiars, Moon Gods and Goddesses, the Day Moon, Light Side and Dark Side of the Moon, Elven Moon Crystals, The Moon in the Tarot, and more (scroll down to see the table of contents). Also, we will cover in Part Two of Moon Elves the various energies of the different cycles as they progress through the Moon Months and the energies best utilized or evoked at that time. In that way, this book is a sort of Farmer’s Almanac, although really a Moon Elf Magic Almanac. Covered in this book are the names and meanings that moon elves have for the Elven Moon Zodiac, and these are globally significant rather than seasonally specific to a particular hemisphere. Part Three of Moon Elves contains some examples of moon elf tribes and a narrative description of each to give you an idea of the varieties of moon tribes that are among us in modern times — including their lifestyle, healing abilities, ancient ways, art and magic, and relationship to nature and to mankind.

“The closer we get to Elfin
the more magical the world becomes.
Like the dawn, we see the light that heralds its coming
before we can see the sun.”

So it is that when we say Moon Elves, we are not necessarily distinguishing them utterly from other sorts of elves (although some surely are exclusively Moon Elves). We elfae folk are generally a very eclectic bunch.
In Part One of Moon Elves you will find a description of some of the various methods Moon Elves use in their magic. This is not to say that all Moon Elves engage in each particular practice we cover in this book or that we include every practice they may have but that these are the most common practices and magics that the majority of the Moon Elfin engage in. Taken together they might be referred to as Elven Moon Magics. We also illuminate what might be referred to as Moon Elf lifestyle and culture, although it is true to say that all elves and fae folk in going about our lives do magic in everything we do. Thus, as our sisters of the Elf Queen’s Daughters in the 1970s used to say, “We elves don’t do magic so much as we are magic and therefore all that we do is magic.” Our lifestyle is also our magic and our magic our lifestyle and this is true of Moon Elves and every other sort of elfin folk. This stems primarily from the fact that while we elves may practice a variety of different magic styles and techniques (from ceremonial magick to sorcery, from pyromancy to necromancy), we are first and foremost, in nearly all cases, enchanters as the ancient lore suggests and as modern elves and our lives bear out. We do not seek to force our will upon the world but rather to enchant individuals so they will willingly and eagerly do what we desire in order to please us because they feel so empowered and inspired by us and our magical elvish beings.
We Silver Elves have ever been of the opinion that an Elven Calendar would be like the Chinese Lunar Calendar and that the Elven Zodiac would have thirteen months based on that calendar instead of the twelve sign zodiac of Western lore that doesn’t fit exactly with the 12 months of the Western Calendar anyway. Aries, for instance in the Western zodiac, is from about March 21st to April 19th and this divergence from the months of the year is true of all of the signs of the Zodiac with each sign overlapping two months. But in our Elven Moon Zodiac, the moon months and the signs would be the same.
If you are a Moon Elf, then we hope you enjoy reading about related tribes or perhaps one of them is your very own.
