It's the story of an 18-year-old girl in 1850s New York City who supports her family when her father deserts them by becoming a stage actress. It was a lot of fun to write because it's a much different world than any I've written about before. So, even though I lived in Manhattan for a long time, the city in 1852 was an enigma to me and I pored over maps to try to figure it out.(less)

Dear Miss Cushman Live!

Last night, I was part of a Facebook Live event with author Amber Smith, hosted by Charlotte Readers Podcast. We had a fun time talking about our new books— Dear Miss Cushman for me and Code Name Serendipity for Amber, and the tricks to writing younger characters. William Shakespeare
“True, I talk of dreams,
Which are the children of an idle brain,
Begot of nothing but vain fantasy,
Which is as thin of substance as the air,
And more inconstant than the wind, who woos
Even now the frozen bosom of the north,
And, being anger'd, puffs away from thence,
Turning his side to the dew-dropping south.”
