Statement Accessory Look Alikes

Milan on Trend on YouTube
If you watch any of the street-style YouTube videos of women in Milan and Rome (I’ve been binge-watching them) you’ll notice that they all seem to splurge on high-end, high-quality accessories. It’s almost a religious dictum: “Thou shalt only carry genuine designer handbags.”
It seems to be true for the women of all ages there, at least in the larger cities. So, they didn’t show any of the nonnas, donned head-to-toe in black, sitting outside on chairs, chatting with their friends. (Frankly I love those images, not for the clothing, but because they demonstrate the beauty of a simpler life.)
But alas, we live in the material world. If advertisers didn’t make us feel insecure about how we dress and how we look, they’d never sell us anything. And frankly, there is a lot of artistry involved in the fashion choices of those lovely Italian women.
The Lure of High End Accessories
What is the allure of an expensive designer bag? Well, they just make any outfit – including shredded jeans – look expensive. It’s part of that “high-low” look I’ve written about: “My bag is from Hermes but my jeans are from Costco.” (I actually just heard a guy interviewed on the streets of New York about what he was wearing. His outfit included a very elegant tailored Italian blazer, Italian waistcoat, and Italian shirt and he added exactly that: “My jeans are from Costco.”)
Now, how do you add a touch of high-end allure? Well, you can do it by simply examining the details of the iconic designer accessories that have stood the test of time, many of them for decades now. That will help you to recognize what defines quality. But designer items come with a hefty price tag.
But I thought it would be fun to hunt around for some similar items at more affordable prices. Unless you are surrounded by snobs, these lookalike bags also make perfectly elegant statements. Keep in mind that many of these are Classic in style and classic fashions never go out of style. If you pony up for an original it will very likely be re-saleable at a good price sometime down the road.
Are They Considered Real of Fake?
A very fashionable friend who lived in New York used to shop for knock-off handbags from street vendors as she felt that designer bags were ridiculously overpriced. There’s some truth to that as you’re often paying a premium for the label.
As it turns out, design elements in fashion cannot be copywritten. A manufacturer can can make a nearly exact copy of a couture piece as long as it isn’t purporting to be the original. Knock-offs – items that have similar style and features – are legal, unlike counterfeits that bear exact logos and claim to be the original.
So, I found some less expensive bags that looked similar to the real deal in their style elements. Will they last as long? Well, the leather ones very likely will. The faux ones will never develop that “old money” patina that leather bags do. But as long as they still look fashionable and aren’t produced in un-monitored sweatshops by child laborers, who cares what the label is? I just avoided including the ridiculously cheap direct knockoffs here. Those likely meet the criteria of “unmonitored sweatshops…”
I’m going to start with an old classic.
“Chanel” Quilted Bag
First up, Chanel. The symmetrical quilting on the original “Double C” Chanel bag is very much a Classic style element. The puffiness of the quilting makes it a bit more “yin.” That implies a bit of Youthful style, and because of the softness of the lambskin, just a touch of Romantic. Those three style elements permeate the entire Chanel line. You won’t see high Drama or anything very Natural or slouchy-looking in the structure of a Chanel bag or any of their clothing for that matter.
An original Chanel Double C insignia flap bag in the smallest size costs about $4000. But you can find them pre-owned on several websites. Some good deals are available on Premium Outlets, etsy or eBay starting at around $1200. Just be sure to always check for the guarantee that they are authentic.
The lookalikes for this type of bag abound. Depending on your budget there is something for everyone.

Rebecca Minkoff Edie leather top handle bag Bloomingdale’s $278
This one is from Karl Lagerfeld Paris. Lagerfeld, Chanel’s late designer – who was handed the reins of the Chanel label – established a down-market eponymous brand. This one below is his version of the Double C bag.

Karl Lagerfeld Paris leather shoulder bag Macy’s $248

Tory Burch Kira chevron handbag Zappos $348

Kate Spade Cary small quilted shoulder bag Amazon on sale $180
Quince has an amazing range of Italian leather bags at terrific prices. Here’s their quilted bag. It also comes in black, tan, light taupe and dark taupe.

Quince Italian leather quilted convertible crossbody bag $119.90
Premium Outlets has an entire page on their website devoted to lookalikes. Here’s their version of this bag from Tiffany and Fred.

Tiffany and Fred Quilted Sheepskin quilted bag $279
Lastly, Mango, one of the “high street” brands, has a lot of hip-looking bags, but they are mostly faux leather. Still, it’s worth checking out their collection. There are some great bargains to be had there.

Mango quilted faux leather shoulder bag Nordstrom $59.99
The Row – Totes
Oh those tiny little Olsen twins, Ashley and Mary-Kate. They sure create some amazingly elegant clothing…for tall women! Their site is called The Row. Everything they offer is refined and simple, and their handbags are enviable. They are considered the “new” Classics: sleek, beautifully made, gorgeous leathers and textiles. No huge logos, no doo-dads.
Totes are wildly popular right now. The Row’s version here, the Park Tote bag, is $1600 but it’s current out of stock. It’s pretty straight-forward. This is their extra large size.
Keep in mind your proportions when buying a tote bag. There are varying rules of thumb about this. Some say the width should be no bigger than your front-to back width. I never quite understood if they meant width or depth. Personally, I think you just need to eyeball it. The key is always: “is the item wearing you or are you wearing it?” Also, the size depends on what you’re using it for. You’re either carrying a lot of stuff or not. That make sit pretty easy to figure out what size tote bag you actually need.
Many of the Row’s popular styles are similar to the one above: rectangular in shape and with a light level of structure. That makes it pretty easy to find something similar. Here are a few other options, all in genuine leather.
Quince has a lot of Italian leather totes in a variety of styles. This is the one that comes closest to the Row bag. They offer it in black, olive, navy, and these two: dusk blue and cognac.

Quince Classic Italian Leather Tote $99.90

Quince Classic Italian leather tote $99.90

Patricia Nash leather tote Macy’s (on sale) $179.40

Bostanten leather tote Amazon $85.99

Radley London Furze Lane Extra Large Zip Tote Macy’s (on sale) $178.80
The Sak bags will always be a little less structured, but their leathers are lovely and hold up well over time.

The Sak Los Feliz Tall Tote in Mahogany $229
Puffy Drawstring Bags
Loewe Flamenco bag $2850
Another new “classic” is the puffy drawstring bag. Stylistically, it’s a pretty far cry from traditional designer handbags. It definitely reads as Youthful, Romantic and a little High Spirited. Loewe’s Flamenco bag here on the left is the most coveted version and it comes in many colors. I just liked the joyfulness of this one in the bright chartreuse. They are versatile because you can wear them crossbody, or tuck them under your arm as a clutch for a dressier occasion.
This (below) is how The Row interprets theirs.

The Row Angy drawstring bag Nordstrom $1990
Teddy Blake is a NY based company that manufactures their bags in Italy. They are all high quality, but annoyingly they list their items as “on sale” when what they are actually showing is their price vs. the high end similar styles. Still, really nicely made. This is their “Stella Vitelo. It comes in nine colors.

Teddy Blake Stella Vitelo $485
Quince has a version in dark tan, black, taupe, and the cream color shown here.

Quince drawstring pouch bag $129.90
Braided leathers are another signature of some of the designer bags. This one from Tiffany and Fred offers one in braided leather on the Premium Outlets site alongside a lot of “pre-loved” designer bags.

Tiffany and Fred leather braided drawstring bag $179 Premium Outlets
And Other Stories is a site that overall caters to a more Youthful style. But the green one here can also appeal to Natural types because of the rope drawstring.

And Other Stories small leather drawstring tote $139
Madewell’s drawstring bag is very versatile as it also has both a cross body strap and a handle.

Madewell mini crossbody bag Zappos $92.04
The “Old Money” Handbags
Gucci original Horsebit 1955 Shoulder bag: $2950

Gnocci tee on Etsy $11.90
Then there are the old staples of fashion that you will see carried by a lot of those Italian women in the videos. Yes, they can be a little staid looking, but they still have a lot of cache.
The original 1955 Gucci “Horsebit” feature (a play on the GG emblem) along with the GG textile is an iconic bag, albeit a walking advertisement. It has a kind of “preppy” quality to it now. You can find a lot of them on the resale market. But because of the signature textile you won’t find similar items unless they are counterfeits. (I loved this ironic t-shirt on the right from Etsy…I may have to buy it)
Coach has its own cache. It still qualifies “designer” brand because of the high quality of all the products in their label. But it’s a more as a “down market” label. This is their Morgan flap bag.

Coach Morgan Shoulder Bag Premium Outlets $199
Fossil bags are usually well made but the leathers can be a little bit heavy, although that makes them very sturdy.

Fossil Harwell Crosssbody Wallet bag Amazon $150
I included this one from Rebecca Minkoff because of the size and similar locking feature.

Rebecca Minkoff Mini Julian Leather Crossbody bag Nordstrom Rack $119.97
Hermes Birkin BagLastly, I wanted to include the Hermes Birkin bag, named after the woman who inspired it, Jane Birkin. Ironically, she stopped using it because it was just too heavy. Still, to this day, many women love it and it is coveted worldwide.
It holds the distinction as being the most expensive designer bag around. Some of them (similar to this one in alligator) can run into the high six figures. But you can find a used Birkin bag on the resale market starting around $9200.
So naturally, there have to be a bunch of lookalikes. And here they are.
About five years ago I succumbed and bought this one (below) in taupe from Teddy Blake. I love it. I love looking at it in the closet. And I have used it exactly twice. That qualifies under the category of “fantasy life” as in “shop for your aspirational life, not your fantasy life” (wise words spoken by blogger Alyssa Beltempo.) Still, it’s beautifully crafted and it will outlive me. So I think I’ll start using it more. It comes in 20 colors and three sizes.

Teddy Blake “Kim” in Stampato leather $450 (on sale) $410
You can always count on finding something similar on Amazon. These next ones are listed as “leather” but when you look through the specs you discover that they are “vegan leather.” Still, they serve the purpose and look well made. I can see a lot of women enjoying either of these and they both seem to get good reviews.

Evve Women’s Top Handle Satchel $48.52 Available in eight colors.
This one has a pebbled finish, also “vegan” leather.

Pebbled top handle crossbody satchel Amazon $60.99 (Comes in four finishes.)
Brahmin is a brand that rivals some high end brands and echoes of the “look” of the Birkin bag: top handle, “alligator” leathers, similar shape. This is one of the ones featured on their Amazon page and comes in nine interesting and unique colors and finishes.

Brahmin Melbourne Caroline Satchel $345 on sale for $310.50
These next two riff on the theme in that they are top handle and crossbody flap bags. Both are from Macy’s, created specifically for Macy’s. They are also faux but look pretty well-made.

Tandii Top Handle bag $89.50 (on sale for $53.70) (Comes in five colors)

INC Emilee Medium Satchel faux lether created for Macy’s $99.50 ($34.83 with code “Friend”)
I hope you’ve enjoyed this little exploration into designer bags. Let me know if you’d like to learn about lookalikes for designer watches and belts. I have a lot of information on those as well.

Making the “Wrong” Color Right

In my last post I mentioned my new denim shirt that was nowhere in my ideal color palette. It’s much more “cool” in color tone than the other blues in my palette. And yet I simply love it.

GAP Fitted Denim Western Shirt $29.99
Like a classic jeans jacket, I think you can find similar items at many retailers. This one is from GAP and is pretty much identical to the one I’m wearing here. If I had searched for a while I could likely find one in a darker color. But I didn’t mind the color contrast that it set up with my dark rinse jeans. I paired it with a rust colored sweater (mine is old, similar is here) that is exactly in my palette.
I might also have considered buying one in an off-white color, as a lot of those are available lately, and then dying it. But I have huge percentage of the Natural style type. (I refrained from describing myself as “lazy.”) The extra time and effort to do that wasn’t so appealing. I just wanted to find something that met my style criteria.
How to Make the Wrong Color WorkFirst, find it in your style. The reason I love this shirt is that it suits my predominantly Natural style in my style mix. (There are charts in my book that identify the elements that can help you define where you fit into the different style types.) I describe the Natural style as “easy and uncomplicated.” Denim shirts also suggest a Western motif, as in “cowgirl.” All that adds up to a look that is not “buttoned down,” “frilly,” or “dramatic.” When something is so exact for your style, wearing it in a color that is slightly off ideal will often still work for you.
Secondly, add something in a color that does work. The fact that I wore it with this rust sweater close to my face gave it another level of mitigation.
Next, consider the contrast level. The shirt, jeans, and sweater all have varying levels of contrast, or color saturation. The shirt has the lowest level. But it doesn’t create an extreme level of dark-to-light contrast between itself and the other garments. If the contrast level is acceptable, that is another green light.
Also, if any color does make you disappear in comparison to its color, you can always adjust adjust your makeup. You can’t tell in this photo (it was taken in very bright mid-day sunlight) but I did wear more blusher and lipstick just so that I would show up more.
Lastly, simply don’t worry. Yes, color accuracy can be flattering and fun, but in the larger scheme of things, this isn’t life or death. The fashion police are not an armed guard.

Lands End Denim Midi Skirt $47.97 with code
More Casual Items for the Spring and SummerAnother denim item on my radar is this denim midi skirt from Lands’ End. For decades Land’s End has been known for workhorse, consistent, and slightly boring clothing. This year they must have gotten a new stylist because their spring catalog just knocked it out of the park. And the whole catalog is on sale through the 30th with the code: SWIMMING
Here’s a sample of what I mean.

Five Pocket Hi Rise Chinos $47.97 with code
This breezy visual, highlighted by the large leather tote and trench coat could have easily been straight out of Elle or Marie Claire magazine. Adding those Classic elements takes the whole look a notch up, and away from Lands’ End more somewhat dated style. About that image, you’ve probably seen that tote bags are the latest “in” shape for handbags. In my next post I’m going to share some information about different bags for different style types. We’ll be looking at the uber pricey version and then some terrific lookalike bargains.

Starfish Cropped pants $32.97 with code
Then there is this combination. You can hardly go wrong with a 3-season striped blouse (and can wear it with a sweater in the winter.) This one is shown with their perennial Starfish collection in a cropped pant. Crops are very popular right now. Unless you have very short legs it’s a cool and breezy look. The simple sandals in tan are a perfect complement. (RE: pant length, my lower legs are pretty short so I tend to avoid crops. I’ll do a post soon about pant lengths and shoes.) Here is one option for the blouse. Macy’s has several.

Green cotton sheath $41.97
And then I just wanted to show a dress they are featuring. This one can be dressed up or down and would be a very versatile and packable piece for a trip. It comes in this moss color as well as black and a deep tan.

Chlorine resistant tummy control one piece swimsuit $62.97
I’m thinking of buying this swimsuit for myself. As for color, black is nowhere in my palette. The closest I can wear is a dark charcoal. But in the summer, especially if I tan a bit, I will wear a black swimsuit. It’s mostly a Classic cut, I like the addition of the cap sleeves, a slightly High Spirited element, and I LOVE that they show an older woman modeling it in the video clip on the page.
Again, if any of that appeals to you, through April 30 they are offering 40% off everything with the promo code: SWIMMING
I hope you try stretching beyond your color boundaries a but now and then. It can be liberating. Let me know if you have and how you felt about that.

What I bought for my birthday: High Street vs Slightly Higher

Typically I shop at “High Street” (affordable chain store) brands. I can often find petite sizes there and they carry a lot of pretty well-made classic pieces like tees, sweaters, and jeans. But birthdays offer a good excuse to indulge a bit. And birthdays are about re-birth. So this year I dipped my toe into a slightly pricier brand that I’ve had my eye on for a while.
A French TwistI purchased two items from Sezane, a French-based company. If you follow my blog you know that French style is one of my obsessions lately. I wrote this post about how to describe French style. In short, it is often fairly Classic in construction but with uniquely feminine touches.
What I love about Sezane is that most of their clothing and accessories are made from natural fibers. They use lots of organic textiles, and they pay great attention to detail. Also, when they produce a winner they offer it in multiple patterns or colors. You might find the same blouse in stripes, color blocking, florals, or an abstract design. There’s bound to be something for everyone’s style.

Sezane Max shirt: 70% organic cotton 30% silk $125
Here’s my first new purchase: their green floral “Max” blouse. Florals always come into fashion this time of year but they are making a particularly big splash this spring. Although I tend to avoid florals, I could not resist this blouse. All of the colors in it were exactly in my palette.
So, why would I avoid florals? Flowers suggest softness and roundedness. Those are “yin” elements typically found in the bone structure and body shapes of Romantic and Youthful types. I have only very tiny amounts of Romantic and Youthful style. Very large florals can also express Drama. I have zero Dramatic style. My style essences are primarily Natural and Classic.
But botanicals – representational images from nature – will actually suit someone with a lot of Natural style. If the pattern is not overwhelming, they can also express Classic qualities. So, the combination of a Classic button down blouse in my colors, illustrated with representational images, seems to work. This blouse was outside my usual neutral and solid color comfort zone, but when I wear it I feel light and cheerful. And I feel feminine.
French Breton Stripes, “Marieners”
“Sue” Mariniere Cotton $110
The next one is this striped Breton-esque tee. They call them “Marieneres,” as in marine or sailor tops. Sezane has a wide selection of these tops, each with its own unique elements: loose sleeved, fitted, boxy, side slit, shoulder buttons, henley, etc. The one I bought is the “Sue” boatneck in Rosewood. It’s heavier weight than similar ones I usually buy from GAP and Banana Republic. But the color and especially the buttons on the sleeves are what sold me. The background color is a warm white and the red stripe is exactly in my palette. And the playful buttons suit my third most prevalent style element, High Spirited.
I had a lot of fun styling this item. What I wore out to dinner on my birthday was this combination on the left. The blazer is old, from H&M several years ago. Here and here are similar ones. The wide leg slouchy pants are from Everlane. (I did iron them before I went out.) They come in multiple colors: tan, navy, black, sandstone, and white. I felt very “Gatsby” in this outfit.
Next I paired the tee and blazer with GAP midrise Downtown khakis. They are still on sale for about $30 and will be a workhorse in my wardrobe for the warmer months. They created a much more casual vibe suitable for things like running errands around town.
With the slouchy pants I also combined the striped top with my ever-trusty and VERY old cropped suede jacket. I have worn it with everything from skirts and dresses to jeans. It’s my favorite piece of clothing, hence it’s still around after nearly 20 years. Amazon has a similar colored faux biker jacket here. Zappo’s has a similar colored cropped jacket here.
Lastly, I threw on my denim jacket and my hold-everything slouchy tote from The Sak. About the jacket, frankly, except for oversized versions or something trendy, denim jackets all look pretty much the same. So it doesn’t makes sense to me to pay a bundle for one. I bought mine years ago but Amazon always has them. Here’s a similar one to what I am wearing here.
And I do have to give big props to that Sak bag. It’s called the Los Feliz slouchy Hobo bag. It’s beautifully made, holds everything I need, and it’s easy to find things that I toss in at the last minute. I also have one in the “meadow” color, which is sage. It looks like the medium size one is not available in navy right now. But the tall tote is. They have a beautiful pale blue one in the medium size here. (When I shopped there for the first time, they offered 20% off.)
As for pale blue, it’s an extremely popular color right now. My next post will be about the spring and summer colors we can expect, and why (and how) I went “off palette” to buy something in that color.
Speaking of color, I’m going through my color course with a fine toothed comb and pulling up all the material that I am able to share. So yes, there will be a color course a little bit later this year. Thank you everyone who sent me so many wonderful notes of support about the course. I do this for you.
[I am not an affiliate for Sezane. But I am an Amazon affilaite and if you purchase something through any of these other links I may earn a small commission for my efforts, at no cost to you. Thanks so much.]

The One Item Every Wardrobe Needs…Really?

On just about everybody’s list of what constitutes a good “capsule wardrobe” – a collection of interchangeable, basic pieces that will serve you forever – there is one that is consistently mentioned:
“Every wardrobe needs a white tailored button-down blouse.”
Well, maybe…
Choose Color First
Let’s start with the color (which is my obsession since my mentor, John Kitchener, is right now reviewing my upcoming color course.) Then we’ll get into the style of a “crisp white tailored blouse.”
First of all, there are innumerable shades of white. For some of us, (including those who like me are mostly autumn or Earthy Rich color type) the shade of white that is typically shown as an example can completely wash us out. That’s because it is most often a clear, and cool white.

Ralph Lauren Crepe deChine silk ivory blouse $245
Someone with a warm, autumn-y color palette typically needs a more ivory shade. Anything much brighter or cooler can make them look sallow.

BOSS Bashinah white cotton blouse $198
But the bright and clear family of white shades will look spectacular on someone who has mostly winter – or Striking Contrast – coloring. The brightness of those cooler whites matches the intensity of color contrast in their own coloring. Those intense whites will never overwhelm them.
For many spring – or Lively Bright – color types, those same cool whites often can work for them as well. The reason for this is that many spring palettes incorporate both warm and cool colors. Also, those who have primarily Spring color harmonies often have a lot of brightness in their skin that can handle the reflectiveness of a brighter white.

HotTouch Women’s Basic Button Down Cotton blouse $26
Now, summer types – Subtle Blended – might be the most challenged when it comes to finding their best whites. The soft, gentle colors of this palette lend themselves to, well, subtlety. Their whites tend to be in the oyster range. That means they are slightly grayed down.
Still, you will see people of all color combinations wearing whites that defy these principles and still look great. Sometimes it’s because they just adjust their makeup a bit to make that shade of white work. But more often it has to do with the fact that they have a secondary seasonal influence that allows for a brighter white.
Style of Blouse
As for the blouse design itself, a fairly fitted button-down blouse is primarily Classic in style. Because Classic sits in the middle – the balance point – of the seven style types (Dramatic, Natural, High Spirited, Classic, Romantic, Youthful, Angelic) we could say that it might work for anyone. (I always have to add the caveat that if you are an extremely Natural bohemian type, you might not find anything in your wardrobe to go with a white button-down blouse…unless maybe if you roll up the sleeves, unbutton the top three buttons, and wear an armload of bracelets.)
So, let’s look at a Classic style white blouse, and then some of the variations on it for the other style types. Some of these cross-over a couple of styles which I will indicate. For those shown here that are not cotton or another natural textile, I indicate the composition.
Classic:The oxford cloth white button down blouse is an example of a purely Classic version of this style. Look for a simple, fairly fitted (not oversized or very slim) silhouette.

Polo Ralph Lauren Oxford Cotton Blouse $125

Lands’ End supima cotton blouse $55

J Crew Oxford cloth button down blouse $39.50
Dramatic:Style White Blouses: Look for exaggeration or a stand-out feature in style or features: collar, sleeves, cuffs, or length.

Misook Mandarin Collar Shirt $218

ASTR the Label Sienna Cotton Cutout shirt $46.80

ALC Madison Top $177

All Saints Evie Cotton Shirt $114 (Dramatic and Natural)
Natural:Look for a looser fit in general, a less crisp textile, patch pockets, or a roll sleeve with tabs. Avoid a silhouette with darts.

Lauren by Ralph Lauren Relaxed Roll Sleeve cotton shirt $89.50

Michael Stars Gracie Linen Button Up Shirt $158

Rails Ellis Long Sleeve Gauze Shirt $168

Cotton On Women’s Denim Oversized long sleeve shirt $59.99

Eileen Fisher Classic Collar Easy Shirt $148
High Spirited:
Look for something cropped, swing-shaped, oversized or that has an oversized feature, or that is costume-y looking but not “serious.” (A more serious costume look would lean toward Dramatic.)

Max Mara Sylvie Cotton Shirt $290

Karl Lagerfeld Ruffled Cotton Shirt $299

Eileen Fisher Cropped Cotton Blouse $148

Karl Lagerfeld Paris $62 Polyester

Treasure and Bond Oversize Cotton Button Up Swing Top $45
Romantic:Look for darts, close body fitted shapes, cinched sleeves, waists and cuffs. If you want to go beyond cotton look for softer textiles like silk charmeuse, and look at the back as well for pleated seams.

French Connection Conscious Rhodes Pleated Cotton Blouse $46.80

Frame Victorian Silk Blouse $398 Nordstrom

Back view

Top Shop pleated waist poplin cotton shirt $37.20

Vince Camuto Open cuff Bishop sleeve blouse $35.53 (polyester) (Romantic and Angelic)

Mango Women’s Fitted Cotton Shirt $69.99
Youthful:Youthful style implies roundness. So, opt for rounded collars, round button details (like pearls), ruffles, but look for crisp cotton textiles are they are also a signature of Youthful.

Vera Moda Beante Ruffle Accent cotton $49

Sandy Liang, Wenbly Lace Trim Cotton $395

On 34th Cotton ruffled collar blouse Macy’s $27.72

Alex Mill Easy Ruffled Shirt $108.75
Angelic:By nature, Angelic is ethereal, so look for details that express another era, as if from a different time, atypical collars, Bishop or Bell shaped sleeves and cuffs, and elongation, as if angels were rising.

Allsaints Cotton Mae Shirt $114

Vince Raw Edge, Oversized Long Sleeve $245 (85% Cotton 14% Silk)

ALC Monica French Cuffs Blouse $295 (Leans a little Romantic too)

ALC Monica Long Sleeve cotton blouse $295 (Collar leans a little Youthful)

Zadig & Voltaire Thebe Cotton Shirt $184
How to Wear a White BlouseSkirts: Designer Carolina Herrera wore a simple white buttoned down blouse with a floor length silk shantung full skirt. It was a spectacular look and incorporated a little Romance and Drama due to the skirt’s textile, shape, and length. This type of blouse is a natural for pairing with knee length or longer skirts – midis, and maxis.
Pants – Jeans definitely look great with a white tailored blouse. Also, a simple white button down blouse also works well with slouchy trousers, shorts, and even Bermudas, which are back in fashion this spring and summer.
Coats – A simple white blouse with a Blazer, trench coat, or other outerwear turns any coat into a more classic look. But, when wearing a blouse with a pointed collar, make sure that the lapels of the blouse don’t conflict with the lapels of the jacket or coat in terms of size and shape. With trench coats, wear the blouse lapels under those of the coat.
Sweaters: This blouse will work nicely with almost any button down cardigan, especially if the cardigan has no collar of its own, and can also be worn under pullovers (or “jumpers” as they are called in Europe.) Just be careful not to mix this type of blouse with a sweater that has its own fussy or stand-out details such as ruffles or exaggerated puffy sleeves. Also, pairing it with a wrap cardigan can be tricky. It might work, but a wrap top often has a Romantic quality about it, and the button down blouse is very tailored. It can be a confusing message and hard to style so that the look is coherent and not conflicting.
So, yes – a white tailored blouse is something that can go with almost any type of outfit. Just pay attention to the shade of white and the textile and details in order to make it an expression of the real you.
And btw – if any of you out there find a long sleeve, petite ecru cotton button-down blouse anywhere, let me know! I’m still on the hunt!

Shine, Sparkle, and Glow: Holiday Outfit Ideas

Suzanne Blons (“The Beauty Shaman” one of my wonderful guests on “31 Days of Self Care”) and I just recorded our holiday fashion rundown on YouTube. Although this video was tailored for older women to show how they can incorporate some of the flashier elements of the holiday season, I wanted to expand on that idea for all my readers.
Here are tons of options regardless of your age, weight, coloring, budget, or style facets. And I have to say, this was one of my very favorite posts to write. It just filled me with holiday joy and cheer.
Now I have to add a tiny caveat here. A lot of these items and textiles are Romantic or Dramatic in nature. If you don’t have a lot – or any – of those style facets, just wear them in a color that works for you. (We can all cheat a little for the holidays.)
A lot of these are on sale now. I’ve included coupon codes for several. They tend to sell out pretty quickly so if you see something you like I encourage you to jump on it now as it may not be available in your size soon.
SEQUINED JACKETSLet’s start with something that just screams “holiday!” Sequins! Sequined jackets are everywhere now and from the ridiculously affordable to the lifetime elegant higher end. Sequins will definitely make you show up. If you don’t want to be that visible, keep scrolling. There is more for you in some of the other textiles.
One of my favorite Australian fashion influencers is the indominable Faye Brown. Faye has a Dramatic and High Spirited Style with a good punch of Romantic thrown in for fun. Sequined pieces are one of her go-to fashion elements at many times of year.
If you have any of those fashion elements in your own style archetype mix, this can be a delightful way to up your game for the holidays. And they are available at every price point right now.
Macy’s INC label is always sure to have a traditional blazer style in sequins this time of year. If you know they carry items and brands that suit your size and frame, they are a good place to shop for this type of item.

INC Women’s Sequined Blazer $99
Just to prove that all color harmonies are represented in sequins, this is a beautiful rich brown from Express.

Express Open Front Sequined Blazer $118.80
Anthropologie adds a lovely element with pearls to this sequined jacket. This is another one of the items that could go the distance for years to come – wear it to weddings, cocktail parties, dinners, date night, any special occasion.

Anthropologie Pearl and Sequin mix blazer $118 at Anthropologie Pearl and Sequin Blazer $118
This one is more tailored and dressed up with black or even white pants, but as shown here, could be a perfect elevating piece for casual jeans. Wear it with sling backs, flats, or booties..

Loft sequined short jacket $170 50% off with code: CYBER
This is one you could wear for many other special occasions as well. It has an almost 1940’s drape-y feeling. It’s a nice combination of Dramatic, Romantic, and Natural.

Light in the box Long Sleeve Silver Sequined wrap $45
And of course, Amazon never disappoints. This sequined bomber jacket would make a playful and bright addition to your casual outfit. It comes in 11 colors and would be perfect for someone with High Spirited or Natural style.

Kancy Kole Sequined Bomber Jacket $36 on
Target has another version of the same.

As does Target: Allegra K Sequined Bomber Jacket $49.99 (comes in 13
SEQUINED TOPSIf you don’t want to go head-to-toe sequined you can simply wear a sequined top with a great pair of slacks or a midi skirt.
Macy’s is showing this lovely DKNY combination along with several other possible combinations for wearing the pieces (scroll down on the linked page to see all of them.)

SKNY Open front shawl collared blazer $100.99 (limited time special) Scoop neck sequined tank $46.99 limited time special) Stretch crepe stretch pants $89
Chico’s usually has a nice selection of sequined tops this time of year. They even have some pretty sweaters with strategically placed sequins.

Chico’s Ombre Sequined pullover sweater $83.30 (30% off now)

Chico’s Gray Sequined Sweater $84.40 on sale
Talbot’s has this blue one that would be a lovely way to bring in some color to your outfit. Wear this with winter white pants for a fresh and celebratory look.

Talbot’s sequined front tank
Or combine one of the showier colorful tops with jeans. That’s a very nice dressed down outfit for a more casual event.

Chico’s Deal of the Day Sequined velvet blouson top $49
Surplice tops, which are great for hiding a larger tummy and bringing attention to the face, are very flattering on many different types of bodies.

White House Black Market surplice sequined blouse on sale $59
And of course, you can’t go wrong with a ruby tank. Wear it with black or white pants, or a midi skirt with sling back heels or sandals.

J. Crew red sequined tank (also in silver, ivory and black) $128
Macy’s carries a wide variety of these tops. This one is from Lucky Brand and also comes in Wine and Rust.

Lucky Brand sequined pullover: $79.50
Sequined SkirtsAnd of course, there are the skirts. These can be dressed up or down. Adding a simple white cotton blouse to a sequined skirt is a very hip and fashion-forward way to do this.

Madewell sequined midi skirt: $138

Nordstrom Black Sequined skirt $188

Amazon The Drop Women’s Bianca Sequined Skirt (also in black) $59.90
And of course, GAP always has the latest “thing” at a great price. I like how they styled it with a striped sweater and simple sandals. For colder weather, you can also wear white mid-calf booties. That would be a very cool look too.

GAP Sequined A-line Maxi Skirt: This one is $39.99
A softer more feminine look would be to wear a sequined skirt with a cashmere sweater. Nordstrom always has a huge selection of these this time of year.

Vince Boiled Cashmere sweater $425 plus 30% off selected items

Vinyard Vines Cashmere Polo $268-$298

Nordstrom Cashmere Crew now $99.90
VELVET
Now, if that much sparkle and shine is still just too much for you (it is a pretty Dramatic statement after all) you can take it all down a notch by wearing velvet. Cotton velvet textiles tend to be less reflective, and they will keep you warmer than velvet made from silk or polyester blends. Cotton velvet also tends to be a flatter weave. So, it is a bit less “romantic” in that it doesn’t reflect light as much as shinier, glowing kinds of velvets.
This year we are seeing so many fabulous velvet pieces. A velvet blazer will serve you for many years since. Wear it with a simple tank, satin, or silk blouse, but make sure the collar doesn’t compete with the lapels of the jacket.
Velvet jackets and Blazers can also be dressed up or down. And you’ll get a lot of mileage out of this item long after the holidays as well.

Chico’s Velvet Blazer $159

Amazon Allegra K Velvet jacket $53.99
Macy’s has a lot of these in different styles.

Adriana Pappell at Macy’s Deal of the Day $68.99

Bloomingdale’s AQUA brand velvet jacket $118
Velvet pants can be worn with satin or silk, but you can certainly add a sequined top if you have some drama or high spirited qualities in your style mix.

Express Editor Mid-Rise velvet pants $52.80 Also comes in black and teal.
Nordstrom carries this one from Mango in purple

Mango purple wide leg velvet pants for $49.99
And an elegant pair of black velvet wide leg pants will add class to any holiday outfit.

Nordstrom – COS wide leg velvet pants $175
Chico’s has this in black and this wine color.

Chico’s Velvet No Tummy pants on sale now for $59
Lastly, Loft carries this five-pocket jeans-type flare velvet pant in this green, black and raisin.

Loft velvet five pocket pant $79.95 50% off with code CYBER
Now if velvet is a big too much for you, or if you have more Natural style essence, consider “velvet” pinwale corduroy. Everlane has a great one and they never disappoint for high quality, reasonably priced pieces. This one comes in black as well and it’s on sale right now. (I wish I had seen it when it was still available in my size.)

Everlane Corduroy Way High Drape Pant $90 on sale now.
Madewell also features a similar fine wale corduroy pant in four colors: Garnet, Expedition Green, Fresh Cider and Antique Cream

Madewell Emmett Wide Leg Corduroy Pant $108
SatinLastly, let’s look at satin. I consider it a three, possibly a four season textile. But because of its shine it’s a perfect textile for the holiday season. We’ve been seeing it everywhere for about the past two years. But I truly believe it’s now become a classic, just like a great blazer or trench coat. The only versions I find iffy are the long slip dresses with lace on the bodice that are just too similar to boudoir wear.
The bias cut slip skirts come in knee length to floor length. Any of them will work beautifully with cashmere sweaters, sequined tops, or satin blouses.

Lands’ End sip skirt now 50% off $52.47 (also in ivory and black)
Nordstrom is styling this one with brown boots. I’d love to see it with white or burgundy boots.

River Island bias cut maxi skirt $57

Amazon Keasmto skip skirt 25.99 (also in black, blue teal and leopard)

Outoshee Store on Amazon $34.99 (comes in 18 colors)
And of course, satin blouses will elevate any look. Wear them with everything from jeans to tailored pants, to pencil or midi skirts.

Lily Silk Minimalist silk top $215 Use coupon code BDF15 for 25% off

Lily Silk Tailored Shirt $149 Use coupon code BDF15 for 25% off

Banana Republic Satin Classic Shirt Seven colors, $35 to $54.97, extra 20% off at checkout

Macy’s Endless Rose Classic Satin Shirt (also in black) on sale $56
AccessoriesLastly, you can jazz up the simplest, most subdued outfit by adding embellished flats and/or dangly earrings. Just make these stand alone items. They shouldn’t compete with whatever they are worn closest to. That means keep your skirt or pant color simple so that these speak for the outfit a little more. And avoid colorful sequined tops with dangling colorful earrings.

Anthropologie Bibi Lou chartreuse sling back flats $119

Lauren Conrad Nathalia velvet bow flats at Kohls: $29.99 with code Shop25

J. Crew Factory Crystal Embellished Flats $102.99 (20% off) Extra 60% off with code SALE60 (Note: This is a final sale item – no returns)

Macy’s Journey Collection Rebel $47.80 with code GIVE Also in black, rose, pink, green, blue

Nordstrom Badgley Mischka collection GIGI Crystal Pointed toe flat also in white $138.60 on sale
EarringsSparkle up your more simple, unadorned outfits with a pair of drop earrings. And let them be the main event. If you are wearing neutral colors, this is a nice way to bring in some color.

Max and Stone faux gemstone drop earrings (also in Ruby and Emerald) $45

Ross Simmons Emerald Drop Earrings $96.75 on sale

Ross Simmons Amethyst Drop earrings on sale $99

Thokuna Emerald Green Faux Drop earrings $59.99 on Amazon
So there are a whole bunch of ideas for how to make your holiday wear sparkle. I’d love to see any of your holiday party outfits. Feel free to drop me a message here with a photo!

My Favorite (inexpensive) Things

I’ve come to greatly appreciate a few items in my home that are so incredibly useful and make my life a little better, so I thought I’d share them with you.
Let’s start with laundry. Now, I am a bit obsessive about recycling. Where I live our city does not accept plastic film or styrofoam in our recycling bins. (And frankly, I’m not convinced that a lot of that stuff does actually get reused.)
Large plastic tubs, like the kind that laundry detergent come in, is one of my least favorite things to recycle. It’s bulky, when full it’s heavy, and it’s just another dense plastic container that needs to be broken down by someone, or some machine somewhere. So when I heard about Earth Breeze I was delighted. These are dissolvable laundry sheets that take the place of granular or liquid laundry soap. Most loads only require one of these sheets; a heavy load could take and extra half sheet and they are easy to tear in half.
There are 90 sheets in a packet and they come in a paper sleeve. I order about two of these packets at a time. If you sign up for a subscription (I get them every two months) the company gives you lots of flexibility about delivery dates. They’re $14.95 for subscriptions which they estimate comes out to about $.25/load.
And if you need to delay or change the delivery, or add more packets that’s easily done from the site. I love these. You can get them with or without fragrance. I get the unscented ones. And if you have a friend or relative who appreciates practical things that won’t end up having to be re-gifted (because they don’t fit, are the wrong color, have too much sugar, etc.) or who has difficulty lifting heavy containers, a gift subscription would be a very useful and appreciated gift.
In addition to my recycling addiction, I am a clean freak. I have battled mold toxins that seriously impacted my health and I tend to imagine funky bacteria growing everywhere (both of which are, in fact, growing everywhere.) So I try to use materials that are as mold and bacteria-resistant as possible. And since you know I adhere to pretty stringent requirements in personal care products, I found something a while ago that makes my skincare routine more enjoyable.
Manufacturers claim that bamboo cloth (made from wood fiber) is bacteria-resistant. Bamboo is in fact very bacteria resistant. Whether or not that remains the case after the fibers have been woven into fabric is up for debate. Nonetheless, bamboo doesn’t require pesticides, so that’s a huge benefit. I buy these wonderfully soft and strong bamboo face cloths from a company called Tia and Fey (on Amazon.) My first order arrived with the outer box damaged and only two of the six in a set were included. Tia and Fey (actual people, and very lovely humans) insisted on sending me a completely new set at no charge and told me to keep the others.
One note: they arrive 10×10″ but will shrink to about two-thirds that size after washing. It’s just the deal with bamboo textiles. I have bamboo socks I can no longer wear because they shrunk and became uncomfortably tight around my ankles. I just throw these face clothes in the washer and dryer and they’re good to go again and again and again. And they don’t seem to degrade the way other cloths do. They are $15.97 for a package of 6.

Suntchen Mini Silicone Spatula Set Amazon, $3.99
This next one is one of those “why-didn’t-I-think-off-that?” items. Because I hate wasting stuff – food, old pajamas that can be reused as rags, jars and plastic containers that can store dry goods, etc. – I especially dislike throwing away a jar of face cream or body cream (or ketchup, for that matter) that still has perfectly good product in the bottom but that the pump – or my hand – can’t reach. That’s why I really love these silicone spatulas. They come three to a set, although on Amazon you’ll see many varieties. I liked this set because it comes with one that has a telescoping handle that reaches into tall containers.
I find it particularly handy when I get to the bottom of some of my BeautyCounter products. The All Bright Facial Oil and Tripeptide Radiance Serum are two of my regulars that have bottles with pumps or squeeze tubes. I use these little spatulas when I get down to the bottom of the jars and they are really effective at scooping up what remains.

BeautyCounter Tripeptide Radiance Serum on sale for $65.25

Beauty Counter All Bright Facial Oil $on sale for $57
Speaking of which, don’t forget that Beauty Counter is having a 20% off sale now through the 23rd on the entire website. For my new customers I will be sending you some product samples from the CounterTime and the CounterMatch collections and the Counter Sun sunscreen while my inventory lasts. I also have some samples of the CounterMan collection for the guys in your life.
OK – I’m recording a new video next week with Suzanne Blons, the Beauty Shaman, about holiday outfits and trends. Stay tuned! And if you are looking for gifts for your friends based on their style archetype, check out this post from Christmases past! and this one for book recomendations.

How Many Colors Should There Be in Your Palette?

I wanted to quickly address the subject of how many colors there should be in an ideal color palette. Over the years one of the main questions I’ve received from people who had a custom color palette created for them is: “OK, what do I do with all these swatches now?”
At first, the sheer number of colors can be daunting. The palettes created by PSC trained analysts contain about 100 distinct colors. I say “distinct” because they are not paint chip shades that range from the lightest to darkest version of a specific color. And that’s because an individual may be able to wear one shade in a paint color strip, but not a darker or lighter version.
So, this whole issue was brought home to me recently when I had a discussion with my friend and colleague, Nina (that’s her palette below to the right.) She explained that she liked the idea of a smaller, tight palette of colors. Here’s my opinion about why that is.

90% Striking Contrast
Nina is primarily a Striking Contrast (winter) color type and has a lot of the Dramatic style essence in her style archetype mix. Both of those qualities – Dramatic style and Striking coloring – suggest someone who cuts to the chase, doesn’t like a lot of frou frou, is direct, and knows who they are. They pick a very few of their neutrals and very few of their colors and that’s what you will see in their wardrobe over the years and decades.
All those element reinforce a lifestyle and fashion expression that is simple, has clean dramatic lines, is highly curated, and doesn’t have any need to change much over time.
It definitely works for her.
How Other Color Types Choose Their ClothesBut of course, we are all unique and we all have a unique combination of fashion style and coloring markers.

Mostly Spring (Lively Bright)
Many of those with a lot of Spring-like coloring (we call it Lively Bright) love lots of color options, love playing with color and color combinations, and adore jangly accessories. The more colors they can play with, the merrier.

Mostly Summer (Subtle Blended)
The gentle Summer-coloring types (or Subtle Blended) share a similar simplicity to that of a Striking but likely welcome the wider range of shades available to them within one color family. They do “tonal” dressing beautifully. (Tonal is when you wear multiple shades of one color, as long as they are all in your palette.)

Mostly Autumn (Earthy Rich)
And then the autumn types (Earthy Rich coloring) simply require a lot of options because their neutrals are, well, unusual and different. Black, white, and gray are rarely the neutrals found in the palettes of those with a high percentage of autumn coloring. So, the many shades of brown, olive green, charcoal, dark burgundy and warmer navy colors invite a very wide range of brighter colors for them to pair with those neutrals in order to come alive, and to avoid looking drab.
What Else Determines The Colors You Wear? When you add in the person’s style essences (or archetypes) that adds another layer of information about which colors the person would favor and what the wardrobe might look like. This is why color analysis is so specific to the individual. This is why it’s extremely difficult to place someone in a color “box.”
So, the value of a large color palette – for anyone – is simply that it gives you options. It gives you the parameters of how far you can go in one color direction. More importantly, it helps you train your eye to recognize what might work for you and what might not. And of course, you certainly don’t have to try to find all the colors available in your palette to incorporate into your wardrobe. That would be challenging…and expensive! You can curate a wardrobe of colors within your palette that really speak to you and about you.
BTW – I’m having SO much fun working on my color course. We’ll look at dozens of palettes, hundreds of women within the seasonal color essences, go into great detail about variations of seasonal essences, explain how colors are determined, define the meaning and psychological effects of each color category, look at how to combine colors for each color harmony, show several outfit ideas for each color harmony, and more. I think you will love it.
Take good care of yourself, and stay healthy, happy, and safe.

Does Minimalist Style Make Us Invisible?

The Row, Fall/Winter 2023 (photo courtesy of Kendam.com)
Recently, there has been a lot of buzz about “minimalism” fashion. At its core, it can be described as a Classic, unadorned, neutral colored wardrobe made up of high quality interchangeable pieces, very little pattern or print, and little to no “logo” accessories. I often advocate for having some of these pieces in your closet.

Photo courtesy of LaDame, the Label
Young fashion influencers jumped on the bandwagon. They called the style “Old money” chic, a description that was sure to trigger someone somewhere. And as day followed night, a torrent of faceless online critics began viciously and vigorously disparaging the whole concept. They not only felt that ultra expensive clothes were being touted but that we were collectively hurtling toward a society and an aesthetic where people were losing their individuality.
Whether you love or hate the idea what can “minimalism” hold for you?
There is Minimalism…and then there is a Minimalist Mindset
Lydia Tomlinson on YouTube
Minimalist style refers specifically to that Classic type of wardrobe I described above: simple, neutral, or solid-colored, high quality interchangeable pieces. It’s actually a very elegant and striking look for anyone, but particularly for a lot of women over 45 (although my very favorite Classic minimalism fashion influencer, Lydia Tomlinson, is probably still in her 20’s.) It demonstrates good taste and refinement. Those aren’t bad qualities for anyone. And they can help you to stand out on their own.
But Minimalism as a concept can also refer to the sheer number of items in your wardrobe. Embracing minimalism means that your closet isn’t stuffed to the gills with things you rarely wear, or that held some sentimental meaning for you ten years ago but are terribly dated now. It can show that your clothes still speak to who you are, intrinsically, and that you wear them on repeat because they are beautiful and well made. It can also demonstrate that you are not trend driven.
Maintaining this mindset when it comes to fashion is healthy way of simplifying life and freeing your mind from clutter. Too much of anything can complicate life. And our closets are very revealing about how complicated our lives might be.
How Minimalism Can Work For You
Photo: Adrienne Leonard/Unsplash
The main draw of a minimalist wardrobe is that it is practical and workable. It’s practical because it saves you a lot of time figuring out what to wear. The fewer the items, the fewer the decisions. It is workable because many of your clothes work well with several other ones in your closet. Another benefit is that it can help remind you that you don’t need to keep buying the same things on impulse. (We tend to do this when we have so many clothes that we’ve forgotten we already own the very same or similar new item that we are attracted to.)
When you simplify your choices, hone your color palette, and do some editing, you will find that getting dressed is a lot less stressful. That doesn’t mean that you have to replace your own style with a strictly Classic, neutral wardrobe. In a post I wrote for Sixty and Me, I examined the two extremes of fashion style displayed by the main characters in the TV series, Frankie (portrayed by Lily Tomlin) and Grace (portrayed by Jane Fonda.) Grace’s wardrobe looked similar to a true Classic minimalist wardrobe.

Photo: Courtesy of Variety
Frankie’s was all about patterns, textures, and ethnic-inspired clothing and accessories. But at this latter stage of her life, she opted for more refined textiles and fewer, but very bold accessories, often matching the silver in her hair. The whole look was extremely chic and elegant. It had a striking simplicity to it. And, her unique personality still came through very clearly.
Can Minimalism Style Actually Make Us MORE Visible?
Quince 100% poplin cotton blouse $39.90

Saffiano faux leather classic dome satchel $28.99 on Amazon
There are several ways a more classic minimalist style can make you stand out, in a good way. Any combination that looks luxe will get you noticed, and really, it doesn’t have to break the bank. I buy a lot of simple, neutral, classic pieces from discount fashion sites like Quince, GAP, Mango and Everlane and they are well made and are of good quality.

TJ Maxx Italian Leather Bag $69.99
Expensive looking handbags can be had for next to nothing from places like TJ Maxx and Amazon in both real and faux leather. These types of structured bags are pretty timeless.
Keep in mind that there’s a big difference between timeless and boring. Classic style is said to be timeless. Does that mean that, say, 200 years from now we’ll be wearing similar style clothing? Not likely. What it does mean is that in our lifetime you would not be able to identify the style with a particular era or trend.

LilySilk 100% silk blouse $129
Now, if you just abhor the idea of all neutrals, you can brighten up your look by wearing something in a fabulous color near your face, such as a great blouse in one of your most flattering colors. That can make your skin and eyes come alive and will make you extremely visible…rather enviable, actually.
If you want to express a more creative, playful, or bohemian part of your personality, you can start with one of the basic pieces – a great pair of slacks, or a leather midi skirt, and add a perfectly tailored white blouse worn with your favorite stack of chunky or colorfully beaded bracelets. But the “simple white blouse” itself has just gone in a new direction, as you’re going to see in my upcoming fall preview with Suzanne Blons. We’re starting to see some fabulous variations with wonderful details and feminine elements.

LilySilk white asymmetrical blouse with puff sleeves $149
If you want to express your inner vamp, try a bias-cut midi length satin skirt worn with a colorful cashmere sweater or even a crisp solid colored cotton blouse. That’s an elegant, sexy, and very current way to do minimalism. And it’s also a pretty perennial combination. Or your Dramatic minimalist look could be something like a solid-colored neutral basic layer of tops, slacks or skirts, leather or wool, worn with a satin blouse and a fabulous, printed, or colorful coat and boots.
These are all simple, “minimalist” outfits. There is nothing boring about them. And they can be varied and accessorized to make you visible but classy.
My Own Minimalist JourneySometimes it just feels like the right time to shed an old image of who you were and embrace version 2.1. At another time in my own life, I more strongly embraced the “High Spirited” part of my fashion style and personality (25%.) That persona was more extroverted, energetic, bubbly, had short curly, highlighted hair, and wore red framed glasses.
But I have stopped coloring my hair, and now wear it straight. The Classic element of my style and personality (25%) is simply what appeals to me more now. I conserve my energy more and I also conserve my finances by not going for an expensive hair color and cut every six weeks. And I have fully embraced my graying temples. My charcoal rimmed glasses match my hair now, and add an element of gravitas.
Personally, I feel more visible and authentic now than I did in my younger years. And it’s a heck of a lot less complicated than how I used to dress.
Dipping a Toe in Minimalism MindsetNow, if you like the concept of minimalism, but you don’t identify with Classic style type, and the prospect of revamping your whole wardrobe doesn’t appeal, start by applying the two most important criteria for a minimalist closet: “Do I love it, and/or do I need it?” If you neither love nor need something, it’s just taking up space in the back of your closet…and in the back of your mind.
And then, with the items that pass that first test, create a few combinations that you wear often. Think about how confident and visible you feel in them. And importantly, apply an honest eye when considering whether or not they still reflect who you are, now.
You can pare down, eliminate a lot of fluff, opt for simple, well-made, and refined pieces, and still be something of a Bohemian, a Femme fatale, an “old money” Classic, a laid-back fashionista, or whatever “title” you want to give yourself.
And you will definitely still remain visible.
NOTE: As a reminder, and for all my new subscribers (and a big thanks to all of you for joining our community!!) my mini course, “31 Days of Self-Care” is still available on Teachable for $5 for my subscribers only. It’s got a wealth of information and will give you lots to think about. It was a daily compendium that I wrote it just after the lockdowns ended and it seemed to resonate with a lot of my readers. Here’s the link again.

Cheap “Sustainable Fashion” – Is it Possible?

Photo courtesy of Open Society Foundation
I just received an email from a woman I follow on YouTube. It was filled with multiple “mea culpas” and deep apologies for promoting so-called “fast fashion” for years. She pointed to the unhealthful environments and working conditions at factories in many emerging countries, and to the environmental impact of the industry as a whole.
The increasingly popular – and important – pivot to sustainable fashion is something I’ve written about in several previous posts. On an independent industry analysis website, goodonyou.com, there are several companies (H&M, SHEIN, etc.) that were initially rated extremely low, based not only on how their suppliers treat their workers, but for the material content of their products.
I discovered that many of the small “alternative” design houses and manufacturers, to whom they gave high marks, offer very limited styles and sizes and/or are much, much more expensive. Certainly, some of these small companies should be looked into. (A bunch of them were overseas, I noticed.) I suspect the site is working in partnership with a lot of those fledgling companies. But I definietely wish them all well. Still, let’s examine the situation further.
Couture vs. Low-EndPaying workers a living wage, using natural textiles, and limiting production will make fashion a lot more expensive. For us consumers, the material benefit of higher-end fashion is that we’re likely to get more longevity out of an item and the textiles are often more elegant and durable. Also, the finishes will be better: seams, linings, buttonholes, etc. That’s why buying vintage or re-sale couture is often the first choice for shoppers concerned about ethical solutions to the industry’s problems.

She’s Got Good Jeans e-book, on Amazon $2.99
We would think that couture houses are more likely to employ more local workers and pay close attention to the supply chain. But even so-called “sustainable” fashion houses and even some of the high-end couture brands are using third-world factories whose workers get paid a fraction of domestic wages. Also, several high-end couture handbags are now being manufactured in China.
Frankly, much of designer fashion reflects the ultra-cutting edge of current style. That’s one of many reasons I repeatedly encourage having simple, classic, basics in everyone’s wardrobe. And well-made classic basics are available at many sites for a whole lot less than what you would pay for from a high-end label.
The Problems with Low-Cost FashionMost of the complaints about a lack of sustainability in the fashion industry surround the wasted materials and resources from over-production and environment toxins from dyes and processes like “distressing” jeans. (I wrote about this in my ebook “She’s Got Good Jeans.”) Sadly, human rights abuses – particularly of the women – in factories gets a lot less exposure in the analyses, for some unknown reason.
So, what does sustainability really mean? And does good quality have to be expensive? Thankfully, some of the middle tier and even lower end companies are pretty good on the sustainability issue. Because I own several items from so-called fast-fashion companies, which I am sharing here, I felt compelled to do some research about how they are tackling the issue. The findings were fairly hopeful. Here are a few that I looked into and that I have bought from in the past year.
GAP

GAP cotton Shaker Stitch Sweater $55
When certain images pop up in my Facebook feed, I feel a compulsion to click. One site that never fails to hook me is GAP. For starters, they offer classic, simple, well-made basics for sometimes ridiculously low prices. (I have t-shirts from GAP that are over 15 years old.) And they carry a huge range of sizes including petite and plus and they have some crazy big sales.
But when I had my GAP cart filled with a great sweater and some organic cotton tees, those images of the women working in their factories invaded my mind and gave me pause.
GAP has been on the crosshairs of many human rights and environmental institutions for nearly a decade. So, I was encouraged when I found this recent report in my research:
“Gap Foundation, in partnership with vendors and non-governmental organizations, launches the P.A.C.E. (Personal Advancement & Career Enhancement) program, which teaches life and work skills to women who work in the garment factories where our products are made.”
As for human rights, their corporate site pledges that by 2025 “100% of factory workers will have representative workplace committees, gender parity among supervisors, and vigorous prevention/response management systems” in place to quickly address the shocking amount of gender-based violence in the industry.
In their most recent update, it looks as though they pretty well on their way to achieving those percentages.
Does this indicate that there are no longer abuses in the industry? No. But the pressure on these companies, and just about all of them in the lower-end price category, is not going to let up. That’s a good thing.
[NOTE: Based on the extreme and frequent sales offered by many of the “fast-fashion” brands, it seems they are still struggling, while trying to strike a balance between satisfying their investors, and doing right by their suppliers’ employees. GAP recently had to lay off hundreds of high-level executives. SHEIN just invested more than $15million to investigate and improve conditions in their overseas factories. But SHEIN is still manufacturing a lot of clothing with microplastics that end up in the landfill, our water, and the marine ecosystem.]
Quince

Quince tencel Campshirt $29.90

Quince cotton fisherman sweater $39.90 (The actual color is better on the link.)
I’ve mentioned this company several times recently. Quince came on the scene about 5 or 6 years ago and must have one heck of a design team. They keep coming up with things that look very much like currently fashionable higher end basics (fisherman sweaters, silk blouses and skirts, organic cotton separates, cashmere cardigans and pullovers, trending classic handbags, etc.) for sometimes one-fifth the typical price. So, I tried to do some digging about how they fare on the sustainability level.
Their corporate verbiage is slightly “hype-y” but here’s how they address the topic.
Quince was built with sustainability in mind. We partner with factories we know and trust. In China, where our cashmere is assembled, we work with a factory whose relationship with one of our co-founders spans more than 20 years. And the factory has worked with the same goat herders in Inner Mongolia for the past 30 years. In Italy, we work with a small factory run by two brothers who have been in business for more than 20 years. They create leather goods using small-batch production and their “factory” looks much more like an atelier run by a handful of master craftsmen who have spent a lifetime working with leather!
We work with world-class factories that are supplying products to the top brands in the US and EU. All of our factories are compliant with ILO standards, paying fair living wages and working conditions. You will see from the transparent pricing available on each product’s page that transparency matters a lot to us!”

Quince European Linen Wide Leg pants $39.90
So far, I haven’t discovered that they haven’t been vilified or targeted by environmental organizations. Considering their visibility, I take that as a hopeful sign. The European Linen wide leg pants on the left here are one of my latest purchases. They come in several neutral colors. Super comfortable and like all their items so far, really well made.
MANGO

Mango bomber jacket
This is a Spanish company that has been extremely popular in Europe but is now also available in the US. I ordered this yellow bomber last year, but they don’t seem to have it in stock any longer. They have a really cute similar denim one now.
I also have a two-piece outfit green top and bottom set (I call it “garage mechanic chic”) last year and consistently get compliments on it. It is 100% cotton and I wear it with a belt I bought about 25 years ago. It’s also sold out. (When they offer a big sale things go quickly. At end of season they often have 70% off sales.)
Mango tends to be hipper and more fashion-forward than a lot of fast-fashion US brands. Plus, their inventory is enormous – slightly overwhelming, actually. There’s something for everyone. And they feature a lot of things, including accessories, that rival materials and designs from higher-end design houses.
They prominently display their commitment to sustainability and a mutually cooperative relationship with their factory workers on the public website. On the corporate site they go into much more detail, but it’s in Spanish. (It gave me a chance to dust off my Spanish – I had to look up a few words.) They list all the factories they use – in fact they were the first large scale company to do this – and have a pretty extensive materials sourcing section.
EVERLANE
I started featuring Everlane several years ago because of their natural fiber clothing, transparency in pricing, and treatment of their factory workers. They were probably the first company that vigorously addressed their workers’ health and environmental concerns from the get-go. And their prices were very reasonable for the quality of their items.
They offer well-made contemporary and classic basics that have longevity and style. I’ve found that in the last couple of years their things got a little too boxy and shapeless looking, (as is a lot of the style lately) but their pants seem to be excellent. In the photo below I’m wearing a pair of white wide-leg jeans that I bought from them recently. They sold out of the wide leg, but here is their straight-leg version. (GAP has a wide-leg version here.) The super comfy sneakers in that photo are from Josef Seibel and although they don’t seem to offer the yellow ones any longer, they still come in a bunch of wonderful colors.
H&M I have been looking for a trench coat for years. I already had one – a fabulous long navy blue long one from GAP – that I bought years ago. It hung in my closet for about two years, unworn. Last fall I finally got it hemmed and wore it constantly. But I’ve been wanting one in the tan or khaki range. (They seem to be out of this one, but have several others here.)
I rarely, if ever, shop at H&M. Some of the stories I heard about their human rights and materials abuses scared me off.
But I just found this:
“For the eighth year running, H&M was included in the Dow Jones World Index . We ranked fourth in 2020, with a score of 70/100. In addition, we were listed in the Dow Jones European Index with the highest possible score for human rights, environmental reporting, social reporting, and materiality. We also reached the highest score in our industry for supply chain management and strategy for emerging markets.
FTSE4Good
H&M has qualified to be a part of the FTSE4Good Index Series. This means that, based on independent assessments, we can demonstrate and measure strong environmental, social and governance standards.”
So on my birthday shopping trip this year I found two things there that had been on my shopping list for ages. It’s rare for me to find any item that fits perfectly, especially as a petite. And although I never wear anything made from polyester I make a rare exception for something I will wear away from my skin. That trench coat was too good to resist. I also found a navy blue blazer – not boxy and long (as a petite those make me look a little clownish) – that fit absolutely perfectly. It’s 100% poly. It will outlive me. That, the trench, and a rain shell are the only polyester pieces in my wardrobe.
Personally, I admire women who buy maybe three high-end items each year, nothing from “fast” fashion houses, and wear the same things over and over. My High-Spirited and Natural style essences need more variety and my Classic needs them to fit. It’s not easy to find higher end items that check all the boxes.
Buying What You Need
I think the best strategy for sustainability-conscious shopping starts with knowing – and buying – what you actually need. That requires clear-eyed assessment of how you spend your time and what types of environments and circumstances you will really be in, not just what you fantasize they will be (unless you’re working diligently toward making that vacation, that promotion, or that location change a reality.)
Also, as you better understand your personal style and coloring, the colors and the styles that flatter you will become more obvious. You’ll be less likely to make impulse purchases for cheap, throwaway items.
If you haven’t yet read my first book, “Shopping for the Real You” it’s a great start toward that process of self-awareness. (Amazon recently raised their fees for printing, but I kept the price of my book the same. The Kindle version is only $9.99.)
When my next course, “Choose Color First” comes out you will have a rich resource for very deep understanding of color and how to use it. I’m plugging away daily at it – but it’s a HUGE amount of material to cover (I have to pour over – literally – thousands of images for each slide) and requires extreme attention to detail. Stay tuned! Have a great summer or winter wherever you are in this beautiful world.

Packing Tips For Summer Travel

Photo: Angelo Pantzazis on Unsplash
Vacations in the summer months usually involve traveling to warmer destinations where we can just let go and relax. But preparing for any travel can be anything but relaxing.
So here are some fundamental things to consider that can make the whole process less stressful, and actually kind of enjoyable! Once your itinerary is set and you have a fairly good idea of what the weather conditions will be you’re already half-way there. The events and climate will give you the parameters for what and how much you need to pack.
Start Early
What causes a lot of anxiety in traveling is those last-minute decisions that often result in making mistakes…resulting in heavy and bulky luggage! So, here’s my main, and what I consider the most helpful, suggestion: start creating your travel wardrobe two weeks before you leave.

Simple Trending Rolloing Rack on Amazon $39.97
If you have one of those handy dandy rolling clothes racks, use it to display the entire wardrobe you plan to pack. If you don’t have one of those racks, designate a portion of your closet to what you plan to bring. You can add or subtract items to the collection during that time, but at least begin the process two weeks in advance.
The reason for this is that your brain starts to connect what you see on that rack every day with how you see yourself at your destination. The length of your trip and the circumstances you will be in will determine what goes on that rack. During that two week period anything that just doesn’t make sense for your purposes or that doesn’t contribute to the whole image you want to convey will stand out to be eliminated.
Choose Your Color Palette
It’s not as important to create entire outfits as it is to be sure that the colors you choose coordinate well with each other. That doesn’t mean you have to go for all neutrals, although neutral basics will make your packing easier and your travel less stressful. For variety you can bring along one or two print items. There should just be a feeling of harmony when you look at all the items on the rack.
What this means is that several items will be in the same color and will harmonize with your neutrals. Neutral colored bottoms and accessories – unless you want to add a pop of color in something like espadrilles, a belt, or a small bag, will make creating a whole look easier. A few tops in your favorite colors will make sure you won’t be bored. But frankly, mono color neutral wardrobes are extremely chic and packable.

Madewell Cotton Poplin blouse $88
If you love prints, a striped top or blouse is perfect for a summer day and can work with both blouses and slacks.
And a floral printed blouse or a midi dress in a nice print can be dressed up for dinner or down for an afternoon walk through town.

Alfani rayon/nylon midi dress – Macy’s $44.75
Another possibility is to pack a pair of loose, printed slacks and wear them with a very simple solid color button down blouse. A simple white cotton or linen one would be terrific in this look. Add some gold jewelry and you’re good to go. It’s a very chic and festive look.

GAP 100% organic cotton blouse $60

Melumia Tropical print rayon pants Amazon $30

Quince gold hoop earrings $44.90
Whether you bring both pants and/or skirts, make sure that the tops you choose can be worn with either type of garment, several times, and in multiple ways.
Start From the Bottom Up
For most of us, the biggest packing conundrum is about which shoes to bring. One woman I know took exactly one pair of shoes with her for a three week trip to Italy. They were designed for comfort, had a 1 ½” heel, and went with everything she wore. But our feet tend to be happier when we switch to different heights and types of shoes.

Brooks Ghost sneakers on Amazon $140
So, here’s the first rule of thumb: wear your bulkiest pair for travel. This was taught to me by my colleague Susan Street, but every travel expert knows this rule. Since sneakers and trainers are fashionable and acceptable everywhere right now, and are often your most comfortable shoes, that can be your bulky pair. (I brought my new Brooks Ghost sneakers on my trip last month and felt like I was walking on clouds all day.) Of course, if you are planning to do some serious hiking, a heavier-soled of shoes will do.
I know we all see a lot of women wearing sandals on an airplane, especially in those “celebrity airport outfit” photos. Certainly many of styles of sandals are very comfortable (Birkenstock Arizona sandals are apparently all the rage again in Europe right now.) But frankly, sandals are less hygienic for plane or train rides, and your feet are likely to get cold.

Birkenstock Arizona Sandals Light Rose Nordstrom $130
But do plan to bring a pair of comfortable sandals. They just say “summer” more than booties or loafers. They are less awkward to pack and take up less space. If you’re traveling for a wedding, you might think you need to bring a pair of higher-heeled sandals, but they aren’t really necessary when there are so many flat and lower-heeled elegant pretty sandals readily available. If you’re going to be going out to dine or attending social events, your sandals should be just dressy enough to look chic.

Dolce Vita iman sandals Nordstrom $60

Franco Sarto Dosha sandal Nordstrom Rack $59.97

Juune Sandals form Sun and Stone, MAcy’s $49
If you’re planning a poolside or beach vacation slides will serve you well.

Aerosole Cele sandals Macy’s $47

Cliffs by White Mountain Macy’s $49
Your third pair can be a slip-on casual shoe or canvas espadrille. The latter is dressy enough to make a lot of very simple outfits look very chic and elevated.

Lifestride Cascade Zappos $72

Eileen Fisher Lee Espadrille $135 Amazon

Rivieras canvas mesh slip on Zappos $88

Vorspack shoe bags $10/13 count on Amazon
And whatever shoes you bring, pack them in bags. I know a lot of women use cloth bags. But shoes accumulate a lot of unpleasant detritus and organisms from the ground. I don’t think it’s a great idea to pack them in cloth bags anywhere near your clothing or toiletries. You can buy some good ones really cheap on Amazon. I save and re-use zip-lock type larger bags when I purchase things like sheet sets or sealed liquids. They work beautifully for packing shoes. Otherwise, large zip-lock food bags for each shoe will also work.
Multi-Purpose Items
When planning your travel wardrobe, choose items that can be utilized for more than one event. In fact, choose items that can be worn repeatedly throughout your trip.
One multi-purpose, no-brainer garment is a large shawl in a pashmina-type fabric. It can keep you warm on a plane or train and in air conditioned rooms. It can provide a nice finishing touch for strapless or sleeveless dresses. I never travel without one.

Cashmere pashmina wrap $130 Amazon (comes in 30 colors)

Japanese Cashmere shawl $146 Amazon (14 coloors)
As oversized tops are very much in vogue, a solid color oversized button down blouse can look great on its own, tucked into a skirt or slacks, or with the ends gathered up and tied around the waist. You can wear it in all those ways with a skirt, slouchy slacks, jeans, shorts or Bermudas. It can also serve as a jacket worn over a sleeveless top or tank. It can also be your beach or pool cover-up.

Talbot’s oversize linen blouse $108
Fashionable French and Italian women have embraced the midi dress, (like the one shown earlier,) as a forever summer piece for ages. And the style is now popular worldwide. These are usually looser, flowing garments, which makes them very forgiving if you plan to ditch your diet while on your trip. Dress them up with silver or gold strappy sandals (sneakers won’t work with these), dangly or chunky gold earrings, and your shawl. Or dress them down by adding a button-down blouse, tied at the waist, worn with neutral slides or flats, or colored espadrilles, gold hoops, and a crossbody, or tote bag.

Everlane Poplin Caftan $138

Quince European Linen Midi dress $69.90
And especially if you’re going to a tropical climate where it might briefly rain every day, or anywhere with very changeable weather, a hoodie windbreaker or rain shell is always a good idea. These are usually thin enough to slip into your carryon or checked luggage without creating bulk as would something like a trench coat or heavier parka.

Walmart Rain Shell $19.86
Textiles

Beauterol Travel Steamer $29.97 Amazon
The most comfortable material for hotter destinations is linen, of course. It breathes well and tends to keep you dry. But remember that it wrinkles right off the hanger. Style-wise a few wrinkles are perfectly acceptable in linen clothing. If you are staying at a nicer resort, it’s likely they will have an iron and ironing board in the room. Ask ahead of time. Sometimes they will deliver an iron and ironing board to your room if it’s not already there. Otherwise, a small travel steamer is a good idea, and they can fold up into a small area for packing.
But woven rayons and other plant-based textiles are also excellent for packing. They don’t take up a lot of space, do not wrinkle, wash and rinse easily, and drape nicely. It’s a great idea to pack a couple of t-shirts or tanks in those fabrics. And as Marie Kondo of “KonMari” fame suggests, I like to roll my tees and blouses instead of folding them. I place them on top of one another and roll them as a group. They are less likely to wrinkle and seem to fit into smaller spaces in my bags.

And Now This Rayon Tee $10.80 Macy’s
It’s hard to travel anywhere these days without at least one pair of jeans. Denim is a heavier textile but not an uncomfortable one for travel. And it goes with just about anything. If you don’t already own a pair of white jeans, consider adding them to your collection. White is always fashionable in the summer, but now more than ever. Wear them with a tank top in the same shade of white or one of the other colorful tops in your travel palette. You can also pair them with a striped tank or tee and add a simple belt, hoop earrings, and slides, flats or sandals for a very chic look. You can also dress them up with a patterned blouse or one of the newer eyelet style fuller sleeve blouses worn with dangling earrings.

NYDJ Marilyn Jeans $87-$119 Nordstrom
If you pack wider leg jeans, either in blue or white, you can also likely wear them with your travel sneakers or trainers.
If the weather is going to be changeable or much cooler in the evening, a cashmere (because it’s very lightweight) or cotton knit cardigan or pullover is another very useful addition. Wear it with your white jeans, a midi skirt, or even Bermudas with slip-ons or espadrilles.

Quince cashmere cardigan $139.90

Quince cotton boyfriend cardigan $49.90
Bags
What used to be called “fanny packs” have gone through a marketing transformation to sound more fashionable. They’re now called “waist bags” or “belt bags.” The latter actually serve as a belt, threaded through the loops on your jeans or slacks. The more fashionable ones are generally smaller but will likely carry your phone, passport, a few cards, and maybe also a lipstick. Some are also worn as “sling” bags, worn like a cross-body.
This is the one I took on my recent trip:

Quince Italian nappa leather belt bag $59.90
The more utilitarian versions, like this cross-body one from Baggalini, have multiple zippered compartments and are very study.

Baggalini cross body $67.08 Amazon
It’s also perfect for your travel days. Another option is a so-called “anti-theft” cross-body version. These have slash-resistant construction and RFID blocking technology so your credit cards can’t be swiped electronically from someone nearby.
But if you are on a beachy-type vacation, you probably also want something bigger and more summer specific. You can certainly pack a straw, raffia, or woven satchel or tote if you stuff it with soft essentials like sleepwear, a small travel pillow, even underwear and socks. But if you’re pretty certain you’ll be doing some destination shopping for gifts, clothing, or accessories you might want to pack a foldable woven or macrame-type tote for your haul.

The Sak Faye Tote $149
Other Essentials
Wherever you plan to travel it’s a good idea to make photocopies of your essential papers and cards (passport, itinerary, emergency contact, phone numbers, credit cards, I.D.) When you get to your destination, keep them somewhere secure, such as your hotel room safe.
Things like sunscreen, makeup, and toiletries can always be easily replaced, but others, like medications can’t. Bring those in your carry-on, not your checked bags. And lastly, speaking of sun protection, be sure to pack at least one hat, maybe two! A baseball cap for casual days at the beach pool or walking around town, and a packable roll up fabric or woven hat for when you want to be more stylish. And large sunglasses will jazz up any outfit.
Bon voyage!
