Finally, after a long time, my mother's "foto-oleo" on loan to the National Museum is back home, in our dining room, to be presented with white flowers on Mother's Day.
This wood relief foto-oleo [center] of my mother in a "Balintawak" was presented by a jilted suitor. She was not able to give it back because my grandfather kept it in his bedroom. Each time we visited my maternal grandparents I would always plead, "Lolo akin na lang retrato ng mommy," and be firmly but lovingly declined.

Sorry for the late posting. When Manuel L. Quezon was elected Commonwealth President in 1935, his rival Emilio Aguinaldo made an election protest. The situation was so heated because it was rumored that Aguinaldo and his followers would foil the inauguration. Carvajal is a small street (more like an alley) in Binondo that you enter on Quintin Paredes (Santo Rosario) and exit on Yuchengco (Nueva).
I used to buy fruits and black chicken here before splurging at Ho-Land Hopia.
In 1938 Carvajal looked more like a street in Shanghai than one in Manila.
