     In Signe Pike’s book Faery Tale: One Woman’s Search for Enchantment in a Modern World, there is a chapter entitled ‘Knock Nine Times on the Faery Door’, which presents the idea that there is faerie lore that says that to enter Faerie or gain the attention of the faeries that one must knock nine times, which is to say three sets of three.

     Now, we must admit that we Silver Elves have never encountered this particular bit of lore previously or, at least, don’t remember having done so and, as you may know, we approach nearly all the ancient and modern lore with a bit of skepticism particularly since much of it is not written by the fae themselves. It is not that we disregard it automatically, but we question it for its validity in modern times and note its value or lack thereof for those of us elfae living in the modern world or post-modern world or whatever. And, on the surface at least, we find this bit of lore rather questionable.

     First, from an elven perspective, the whole idea of Faerie having doors is a bit silly in a fashion. Faerie is not a house or building and its borders are composed of mist and are ephemeral in nature. So it cannot be knocked on in a literal sense in the way that some people have a secret knock so that their friends in hiding will recognize it is them banging on the door and will give them entry. Dah, dah ah, dah dah, dah dah. Now, Signe Pike understood and made it clear that she meant this in a metaphorical way and not that one literally had to knock on a door but rather that one had to endure and keep trying to contact the fae folk over and over again. Her point was really about her own tendency to give up and cease her search and she wasn’t indicating that there was an actual door to knock upon. And here we certainly must agree. The path of the Elven Way, like all spiritual paths, demands perseverance and even life itself requires that we endure whether we are spiritually orient folks or not.

     Nearly every relationship also takes some effort and perseverance, especially in cases where you wish to meet and form a relationship with those (the faeries in her case) that aren’t, for their own part, seeking you out as a friend or acquaintance. This is not entirely unlike those who are seeking romance with someone and keep hanging out in places that they are known to frequent in the hopes of encountering them there and ‘accidentally’ bumping into them. OMG, what a coincidence seeing you here!

     So, on the surface, this bit of lore just seems to be a metaphoric recognition that a relationship with the faeries, as with every other person, requires a bit of effort and also demands continuous energy over time. This remains the case when one is actually aware of being elfae of some sort and wishes to progress upon this path. It takes effort, and that effort and its effects are not to be achieved all in one go but in bursts and advances over time, much in the same way that education is a continuous endeavor to learn and understand. And by doing so become more knowledgeable and, hopefully, enlightened and having, hopefully moments of true realization and comprehension on new and greater levels.

     And yet, as it happens, well over a decade ago, we came upon this greeting card that contained a spell for prosperity in it. According to the directions, we were supposed to take three coins and say the incantation provided three times over it and then leave the coins out in the world to spread the magic and bring prosperity to us. We thought, why don’t we say the incantation three times three, wait three months and say it again in that way, and then wait another three months and do it once more? Which is what we actually did. However, we never put the coins out. We’ve had that magic brewing on one of our magic tables for all these years hence. And if we ever find where we put it (somewhere in our eald, for there are magic tables all over our eald), we’ll probably release it.

     Also, over a decade ago, we took a course in Qigong from a Master of that Art and one of the things we learned was to draw down the energy from the sky to the three dantians. Since then, for the last half dozen years or so, we have used this technique in two of the magic rituals we do daily, which involve: 1.) a combination of reiki and elfin spirit sign language from our book Elfin Spirit Talk  and 2.) the second technique uses a combination of elfin spirit sign language and qigong where we draw down the energy to the three dantians. Only, we draw it down three times three. Knocking on spirit’s door nine times as it were. And all of this long before we even ever heard of Signe Pike’s book.

     While we never consciously meant to confirm this bit of lore, somehow, we instinctually did so. So, is there any truth to this faerie lore? Indeed, there seems to be.

Elven Sign Language for Magic and Spell Casting

For years now, we Silver Elves have been using a sign language we’ve created to go along with our magic and our spells. ELFIN SPIRIT TALK: Elven Sign Language for Magic and Spell Casting, shares with you, dear Kindred, this magic of hand movements. You can see our love of using hand gestures in our oracles and magic reflected, in part, in our book Elven Geomancy where whatever result you get as an oracle also has a series of hand movements combined with mudras. These mudras will either greatly increase the power of the oracle and its prediction if you like what you receive and want that outcome to occur, or decrease its potency if the reply from the oracle was contrary to what you wanted. This being done as a way, therefore, of warding off disaster or undesired consequences and moving the energy in another more positive and desired direction. We have carried this practice over into our daily spell casting and in doing so have created a number of spells for ours’elves that we do every day with hand signs similar to American Sign Language in certain ways, only specifically for magical use. After all, magic uses the language of symbols for communicating with spirits. And thus you will find in Elfin Spirit Talk that we have created word signs in the fashion of sign language for the deaf and hearing impaired.

PART ONE of Elfin Spirit Talk has 100 elven spells of magic created in both English and Arvyndase and they cover most situations in life about which you might wish to perform magic, including ten spells in each of ten categories: Protection, Prosperity, Good Fortune, Longevity and Healing, Happiness, Power, Knowledge, Love and Relationship, Wisdom and Spirituality, and Creativity. Once you have found just the right spell in one of these categories that you need for your particular individual situation, you may then go to Part Two of the book and look up each word in the spell to find the Silver Elf Magical Sign Language to go with it.

PART TWO is set up in alphabetical order like a dictionary, so it is English to Silver Elf Magical Sign Language. We include in this section the directions for using the elf sign language to go with the magic spell that you have selected from the first section of this book.
