Apple’s iOS15 update is here, are you prepared for it?

Yesterday, my iPhone started an automatic update to iOS15.1.

Once it finished updating and restarted, I clicked on my mail icon and the following message appeared:

If you haven’t heard the news, the new iOS15 update is providing users with enhanced privacy controls, which included Mail Privacy Protection.

So what does that mean?

It’s a new feature that will stop email senders from knowing whether or not an email has been opened.

It ALSO hides the email recipient’s IP address, hiding their location and essentially removing tracking pixels in emails...which means this is going to severely impact open rates.

Additionally, iCloud+ will have a ‘Private Relay’ feature that will prevent you from tracking Safari users on your website, and the new Hide My Email feature will allow your customers to replace their real email address with a proxy that can be changed at any time.

As advertisers, we are constantly having to adapt our marketing strategies, and with this new update, it is more important than ever to leverage our Zero Party Data.

Here are a few things you can do to make the most out of the data your customers provide you with:

Make sure to collect emails at the top of the funnel during cold traffic targeting. Having this data will be  CRITICAL  to capture.Adjust your email engagement metrics from open rates, and instead focus on metrics like click-thru rates, conversion rates, and unsubscribe rates.If you’re not doing this already - (and YOU SHOULD) - create an email preference center to segment your subscribers so they can choose what types of emails they want to receive from you...EX: promotional emails, information emails, account emails, etc. Not only does this allow you to gain trust with your customers, but will go a long way in getting accurate data from your email marketing.

It can be easy to get defeated by all of these new privacy changes, but the faster you can admit and let go of 3rd party tracking, and email open tracking from the Apple Mail app, the sooner you can modify your advertising strategies.

Instead, shift your focus to creating incredible advertisements that convert your prospects into buyers, and turning over your ad dollar as many times as you can.
