I was reading the December No B.S. Newsletter, and in the opening article, our very own Darin Spindler talks about creating a Big Hairy Audacious Goal and why it is important for you to have one (or more) for both your business and personal life.
If you haven’t heard of BHAG before, it’s a clear and compelling target for an organization (or person) to strive for, and a term that was popularized in the book, Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies by Jim Collins and Jerry Porras.
If you haven’t read this, I highly recommend adding it to your to-read list.
Having a BHAG, means you have a plan and are thinking forward instead of backward...do you have one for yourself?
Do you plan your day, week, or month?
Do you plan at all?
Personally, I schedule my months ahead of time for both business and personal goals.
Then I break them down week by week with action items that I need to complete in my daily planner.
After that, I take those steps and add them into my calendar that I can access on both my laptop and phone, which can then set reminders for me so I don’t miss anything.
This allows me to know what I need to focus on each day of the week and be as productive as possible so I can stay on track during incredibly hectic times (like this week and my huge move!)
When I’m not moving, I also like to write down my goals on post-it notes and put them on my bathroom mirror so I have to look at them every morning when I’m beginning my day. I got this idea from David Goggins, who wrote the book, Can't Hurt Me: Master Your Mind and Defy the Odds.

Create FREEDOM In Your Business
The holidays are right around the corner, and it feels like time is flying by.
Do you feel like you’ve accomplished everything you’ve wanted to this year?I think back to the beginning of the pandemic lockdowns.

Add some holiday magic to your marketing strategies this season

With the holidays right around the corner, I hope you’ve been planning your holiday marketing accordingly. Here are a few things to noodle on as we embrace the season of giving.
As I mentioned in last week’s Minute, with the many changes in Apple’s iOS14 and iOS15 updates, it is important, now more than ever, to rely on your first-party data.
Think about what kind of touchpoints you can provide your customers, clients, or patients, to keep your business top of mind as they shop for the upcoming holidays, and in what ways you can make the experience as smooth as possible.
Are you leveraging your email list and segmenting your subscribers with targeted messages?
Or if you’re planning to send out SMS communications, how can you personalize your messaging so that your prospects don’t feel like they’re being sold to? (And ultimately, opt-out.)
Additionally, be prepared for the supply chain delays, consider extending shopping timelines.
Many buyers are hyper-aware of these delays and have begun their shopping earlier. To get ahead, you can incentivize your prospects to purchase with early promotions and be transparent in your communications for any possible delays in fulfillment.
Finally, as e-commerce has stabilized this year, buyers are looking for more in-person experiences. If you’re a brick-and-mortar business, have you considered the hybrid experiences you can provide your customers?
As we’ve seen over the last two years as a result of the pandemic, businesses have embraced the option for customers to buy online, and pick up in-store. If this is an option you are providing, make sure to provide clear instructions to buyers.
Shoppers are beginning to feel more comfortable returning to visiting in-store, so it is vital to enhance their in-store experience.
What magic can you create from the moment they enter the store, to the time they leave?
Remember, your customers are looking for gifting inspiration, product discovery, and ultimately, the connection you can build with them to make their shopping trip worthwhile.
The holiday season is a magical time for many. This time last year, it was a difficult time for many families. So make sure you’re able to provide an experience that your buyers can’t forget.

Apple’s iOS15 update is here, are you prepared for it?
Yesterday, my iPhone started an automatic update to iOS15.1.
Once it finished updating and restarted, I clicked on my mail icon and the following message appeared:

If you haven’t heard the news, the new iOS15 update is providing users with enhanced privacy controls, which included Mail Privacy Protection.
So what does that mean?
It’s a new feature that will stop email senders from knowing whether or not an email has been opened.
It ALSO hides the email recipient’s IP address, hiding their location and essentially removing tracking pixels in emails...which means this is going to severely impact open rates.
Additionally, iCloud+ will have a ‘Private Relay’ feature that will prevent you from tracking Safari users on your website, and the new Hide My Email feature will allow your customers to replace their real email address with a proxy that can be changed at any time.

As advertisers, we are constantly having to adapt our marketing strategies, and with this new update, it is more important than ever to leverage our Zero Party Data.
Here are a few things you can do to make the most out of the data your customers provide you with:
Make sure to collect emails at the top of the funnel during cold traffic targeting. Having this data will be CRITICAL to capture.Adjust your email engagement metrics from open rates, and instead focus on metrics like click-thru rates, conversion rates, and unsubscribe rates.If you’re not doing this already - (and YOU SHOULD) - create an email preference center to segment your subscribers so they can choose what types of emails they want to receive from you...EX: promotional emails, information emails, account emails, etc. Not only does this allow you to gain trust with your customers, but will go a long way in getting accurate data from your email marketing.It can be easy to get defeated by all of these new privacy changes, but the faster you can admit and let go of 3rd party tracking, and email open tracking from the Apple Mail app, the sooner you can modify your advertising strategies.
Instead, shift your focus to creating incredible advertisements that convert your prospects into buyers, and turning over your ad dollar as many times as you can.

Is your mindset creeping it real?
In this month’s Newsletter, Darin and Dan discuss a Renegade Millionaire principle, which is using and re-using assets in your business for maximum money...and the importance of doing this in order to avoid your business being “Amazon’ed”.
In today’s day and age, so many business owners and entrepreneurs are frustrated with losing business to Amazon. I see complaints about it all the time.

As someone who has been a part of the Magnetic Marketing community for the least 10 years, I hear from new Members of the community, who have spent tons of time, effort, and money to create an ad (whether it is Facebook, Instagram, direct mail, etc.) only for it to fail miserably.

Are you there, Facebook?
Earlier this week I was reading through some of the newer posts on the Magnetic Marketing Private Facebook Group.
One of the things I love about our community is how knowledgeable and helpful all of our Members are. It’s a great place to ask questions, get advice, feedback, and resources for your business.

But around 10:40 AM CT, my scrolling suddenly came to a halt, I couldn’t see any more of the updates, and I realized…
Facebook has crashed. (Uh Oh!)

If you didn’t hear the news, on Tuesday, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp suffered from a global outage.
Apparently, someone at Facebook removed the map that tells the world’s computers how to find its various online properties.
I am not a huge techie, but I’m glad I’m not the Facebook team member who broke it.
I’m also glad that as a marketer, and a Dan Kennedy student, I know the importance of owning your assets (ex: your email list) and not relying on social media platforms to sell your products or services.
And while many believe having a blue check next to your name, and having a huge following on social media gives you some sort of status, if the followers you attract can’t be made active AND moved over to a sales environment where they can be monetized, what’s the point?
This is one of the many problems with only relying on ‘influencer/social media marketing…’You don’t own your social media followers (this is why we build email lists!)
You are reliant on social media platforms, and as we know, they are NOT reliable.It brings me back to something Dan says all the time in his newsletters and presentations:“If you can’t measure results in dollars, don’t do it.”– Dan Kennedy
I’ve been around Planet Dan since I was 19 (I like to tell Members that I went to the ‘College of Dan Kennedy’) and I’ll be honest…
I used to read his Newsletters thinking, what in the world is this grumpy old man saying?

But as I continued to read and learn, I began to understand the importance of creating assets and building your list.

How do you create magic in your business?
Tuesday, September 21, 2021 - Diagon Alley
It was a dark, humid night, and I was walking along a cobbled path near Gringotts Wizarding Bank.
All of a sudden, I feel a sharp heat on my neck and a small rumble whispering in my ear.
The roll of noise begins to get louder...and louder… and louder.. then all of a sudden
BOOM!
A massive dragon above us, and atop the Bank lets out a fiery breath, and everyone around me (including myself) screams!
I would be lying if it didn’t scare me at first, but then I marveled at how much I felt like I was actually in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
That moment was so immersive, I immediately felt like I was once again a 9-year-old kid, who had just picked up Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling for the first time.
I imagined what it would be like as a new student, getting my wand, my owl, and books in Diagon Alley, before hopping on the train and heading off to Hogwarts (if you’re a Harry Potter fan at all, you know what I’m talking about!)
It was such a cool night, and I fangirled hard.
Of course, I am not really a witch, and I am not going to Hogwarts to learn how to use magic.
But myself, along with the rest of the Magnetic Marketing team (minus Darcy who hadn’t arrived yet) had the amazing opportunity to join Russell Brunson’s Inner Circle Members to have an amazing experience at Diagon Alley all to ourselves.

Back to my story…
The night was filled with a bunch of awesome moments, like eating dinner in The Leaky Cauldron, going on the amusement ride, Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts which was a 3D experience, and getting to hop on the Hogwarts Express at King’s Cross Station.
Whether you’re a Harry Potter Super Fan or not, it is a completely enchanting experience!
There are also a ton of marketing takeaways throughout the night.
First, here is a quote from Walt Disney that Dan Kennedy has shared numerous times throughout his newsletters and seminars:
“Do what you do so well - and so uniquely - that people can’t resist telling others about you.”This applies to how you market yourself, what you do in the prospect's presence, in the
customer's presence and with service after the sale.
Sure, we were technically at Universal Studios, not Disney, but the experience was done so well you weren’t thinking about where you were...like I said earlier, I felt like I was a student, ready to hop on a broom and cast spells with my new wand!
Speaking of casting spells, the wands you can purchase at Ollivanders Wand Shop come with a map that you can take around Harry Potter World and cast actual spells with! For example, we could walk to a certain area, cast our wand, and make it rain!
How cool is that?
And for super fans like myself, they had Harry Potter swag everywhere. You can purchase clothing for whichever Hogwarts House you belong to.
There were also shops with all the authentic writing supplies a witch or wizard could need including ink and inkwells, feather quills, parchment, and writing paper.
They also had Sugarplum's Sweetshop (this was Darin’s favorite) where you can get candies, ice cream, or any kind of treat to satisfy your sweet tooth.
And for the major, major super fans, they had Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions shop, where if you’re a superfan ready to spend the big bucks, you could get an authentic robe for $797!
When I told my husband I was going to buy one for myself, he called me from California to talk me out of it!
The next time you find yourself in an attraction like this, think about how you can make an experience so thrilling for your customers, clients, or patients, and how you can leverage that for your business.
For Russell, not only do they benefit from working with him 1:1, but they also get to have incredible experiences just like this, having them stick around as his Members for decades.
It was an awesome way to kickstart a stellar four day event (more on that another day).

My interview with Marty is really a sneak peek into the kind of advice and information you’ll receive during the event and I know people who would pay for just his responses to my few questions. To preface, Marty along with myself and the other speakers are all contributing a chapter to Dan’s book, so the biggest thing I asked Marty was to share with me, “What did you decide to do with your chapter?"
Here are some highlights from Marty’s response:
So, what I decided to do with my chapter was to tie in a music theme, with a top 10 list, Letterman style, tied into popular songs. The first one I put is “You’re So Vain, You Probably Think This Ad Is About You.” Which is a play on the Carly Simon song, You're So Vain, You Probably Think This Song Is About You. And what that means to me, is so many people view their advertising as like an extension of themselves. It has to be pretty; they’ll focus on things like palette colors and obsess on fonts, logos, and all this stuff.
That's not what direct response advertising is. We got to get the vanity out of it. We've got to get the ego out of it. What direct response marketing is, is a specific ad, and it could be in direct mail. It could be a Facebook ad. It could be an Instagram post. It could be in an advertorial It can be whatever. But the function of it is to put out a dollar and get more dollars back. That's the purpose of the direct response advertising.
So the thing with Dan Kennedy style ads is it's got the four Kennedy components. You have a headline, you have an offer, you are always speaking to what's going on in the customer's head. At that point you've already lost most branding people there. They're out.
You’ve got “Where is the placement of this pepperoni on this pizza? How much steam is coming off of it,” versus, “Bring the family of four down before X and get X off and join our VIP club.” So, the first thing I'm going to talk about in the book and the presentation is my biggest advice for everybody, which is to get your ego out of it, because that is the biggest challenge.
You could literally close out your email right now and rewrite or write from scratch a direct response advertisement for your business that followed the the four Kennedy components and includes ZERO ego and ZERO vanity. This single email just provided you with a strategy that you can implement this very second.
