Why The Worst Thing Your Business Could Be Is One-Of-Many

There are a few big arguments for moving up, but the bigger argument is you can't afford any slop.

Whoever you're getting money from, however you're getting money, you better be effective to the enth degree.

You can't afford one bad phone call inbound. You can't afford one follow-up mistake. None of that.

A couple of suggestions.

One, if anybody, and everybody can be your customer, if that's the way you've been playing the game, if you've been doing me too, like everybody else, but a little bit better, which is what 90% of all marketing messages are incidentally, you're in real trouble. 

Because people never really wanted one size fits all. Now that they are more circumspect about how they spend their money, they want it even less.

 So, specificity is now more important than it ever was.

You can't afford to be another choice, in 2006 in most categories, you could be another choice and money ran up hill, not so today.

The very worst thing you could ever be is one of many.

If you watch TV, regular TV, the kind would commercials in it, that's on at a time. On a network. If you watch a night of regular TV, not stream through Netflix or DVR with all the commercials cut out or whatever. If you watch real TV like two-thirds of the public, by the way, still watches real TV, contrary to what you may think.

And you watch commercials. I am always stunned that advertisers are willing to spend so much money to appear in an environment in a way that they are just one of many.

 The Ford commercials, immediately followed by the Toyota commercial immediately, followed by the Hyundai commercial.

And the Allstate commercial is immediately followed by the Progressive commercial, which is immediately followed by the State Farm commercial.

Can You Change Your Life Forever In Just 2 Days?

If I had heard someone ask me this question 20 years ago, I’d have laughed them out of the room.

It would seem like a promise of a life-changing event in just 48 hours would be impossible.

About 15 years ago, right after I had been divorced, I was waiting for a copy project at the local FedEx Kinkos.

In the FedEx Kinkos was a book rack.

On the rack, a book with a big bullseye on the cover.

The book?

For me, this was the first step to changing my life forever.

I read the book cover to cover and wrote my very first sales letter in just a couple of days.

Let’s Party

It’s Darin from Magnetic Marketing and it’s been another fast and furious week. 

Earlier in the week, I wrapped up the June issue of the No B.S. Magnetic Marketing Letter, if you’re not yet a subscriber, now is the time to join. 

One thing I share in the newsletter is a quick story about my daughter. On Tuesday night she was inducted into National Honors Society. Do You Have A Marketing Plan?

In the upcoming days, I also have a birthday. Frankly, I’ve been so busy I forgot about it until my daughter mentioned it about a week ago.

Birthdays can be a simple part of your Ultimate Marketing Plan.  

I love birthdays as a part of a plan for a number of reasons. 

For many businesses like my restaurant, we can easily target upcoming birthdays to build our list. We simply go to Facebook, set up an ad targeting my ideal prospects that have an upcoming birthday. They opt-in for a FREE pizza on their birthday and then each week I’m able to communicate with that list to share with them our newest pizzas, salads, pasta, and ice cream. 

We can also mail a birthday card inviting them to dine with us on their birthday and before the virus, we encouraged them to book parties in our party room. It seems like we’re finally getting to a point where parties will be a reality again too! 

Another way to use birthdays in your marketing is to celebrate by throwing a ‘birthday party’ for yourself. I remember years ago Yanik Silver had a special offer every year on his birthday.  

Personally, I’ve used my birthday as a reason to email members of my Kids Bowl Free program and then provide a discount for one of our products. 

There are dozens of ways you can go about celebrating your birthday as a part of your marketing plan or putting on autopilot an evergreen marketing system for birthdays in your business.  

This week I received a birthday card from my accountant Mary Guldan who is a longtime Magnetic Marketing Member. She includes a card and a certificate for one of her clients where you can pick up a gift. This year some olive oil from a local oilere. 

What I love most about birthdays is they happen every year, you can set them up and let them run mostly on autopilot and then ring the cash register! 

Birthdays should be just one small piece of your Ultimate Marketing Plan.

Use Your Email Inbox As A Tool!

I’m sure your inbox is much like mine. 

Dozens to hundreds to thousands a day coming to your inbox 

Frankly, I’d love to shut my email off, forever.  

I have a love-hate relationship with it. 

But today let me share with you what I love.

Earlier in the week, I received the email below…now before some of you blow up and stop reading because you think this came from Trump or the Right side of the aisle…I also get them from the other side of the aisle.

…and you should too.  

The most talented and most expensive copywriters work in politics and fundraising. There’s much to hate about their marketing, but there are also lessons in every message they send…both sides.

Why Marketing In America Is Worthless To You

Pick a center of influence. Guy with a big customer list of his own, somebody that's on TV all the time, that's on the radio. 

What's it worth having them as a customer? 

A lot. 

Because they have the center of influence potential.

What does that mean? 

You should spend more and be more determined about getting them.

Ability to buy, willingness to buy, all these things matter.

Which gets us to the reality of America. 

The vital conclusion you will come to as a smart marketer is most of America is worthless to you.

They don't have the ability to buy. 

They don't have the willingness to buy. 

Nobody respects them. 

So their replication potential is very low. Don't go get them. 

Here are the current numbers. People think it's bigger. 

The total number of households with net worth of $1 million to $5 million is 11.3 million.

From $5 million to $10 million it's 1.3. 

From $10 million to $50 million it's 875,000. 

That's it. That's all there is in the whole damn place. 

And by the way, net worth, if you're selling expensive stuff matters more than income, right?

Why Ad Budgets Are Nonsense

A financial efficiency to think about is the number of times the same dollar goes out, gets money, and returns with it.

This is why ad budgets are nonsense. 

Dan Kennedy once had a client in a private meeting tell him that he's going to go get his master's degree. 

Dan described hearing this and feeling bile rising in his mind, because, if you actually take a course in advertising and marketing, there's a whole big module of that on how to do budgets. 

And direct response people understand ad budgets are nonsense.

We send $1 out. If $1 comes back with a $1.30, we want to send $1 out again, just fast as we can. 

And again, and again, and again and again. 

But if we set a budget, what do we do, stop in September, because we've spent all we said we were going to spend? Despite the fact that every time you send it out, it comes back with 30 cents more?

We've hit our ad budget for the year, and we're not going to do that anymore. 

We'll just park that $1 over here and it'll wait till next year where we create a new budget. 

This is again how big dumb companies operate. Honest. This is what they do.
