I FINISHED IT!!!

Yeah...that's about the most positive thing I can say about this train wreck of a novel.

I made many attempts to read this book over the last year. So many of my friends here on GR and out in the real world absolutely LOVED this book and kept promising me that once I got into the story I would fall in love with Travis the way they had. So, for that reason...and because I am just too stubborn for my own good...I kept trying.

I’m finding that the young adult bookswritten today are not just for teens, but also for adults. This novel, written by Jamie McGuire, was hot, and emotional, and physical, but most of all, riveting. Abby Abernathy meets Travis Maddox during one of his many underground hidden fight meccas. With swarms of college kids betting on his elicit fistfights, he comes to her rescue as the fight gets out of hand. Cousin to her bestfriend’s boyfriend, Travis radiates smokin’ badboy with his colorful tattoo I’m finding that the young adult bookswritten today are not just for teens, but also for adults. Through time they are inseparable, but with him parading his numerous girlfriend wannabes around, and with her seeing one of Travis’s fraternity brothers, the feeling of jealousy invades both consciences. It all comes full circle when the two make a bet that Travis has the pleasure of winning. Will they take their relationship to the next level of intense intimacy or will they remain just bestfriends forever? This is a deeply moving page-turner with compassionate characters that came from very different upbringings. The character of Travis was sometimes a real jerk with his cocky attitude and childish outbursts, but he was so confident and protective of everything and everyone that was important to him. While Abby was uuummm.......I don’t know what to think about Abby. She sometimes came off as a little too good for everyone else, and she did lead Travis on at times, but that just seemed to go hand-and-hand with the background that she came from. She was very guarded and didn’t want anyone to know where she came from or who her father was. I really enjoyed this novel from author Jamie McGuire, and I am looking forward to reading the story from Travis’s point-of-view...Walking Disaster...when it’s released in 2013! ...more

2.5 stars. Okay so here's the deal with this, It was just a little too immature for my taste. It read like they were all in high school and not college. The beginning was okay, it had me wanting to see Travis and Pidge finally hooking up, but by the middle I started to lose interest since they were already in love with each other anyways. I guess I could see why so many people love this book since it was a unique read with the unstable Travis making things interesting with his wild self, but I'm ...more

This book had gotten so much buzz that I wanted to check it out. I didn’t expect to like it, really thought it would end up on my dnf pile, so color me surprised when I really enjoyed listening to it despite all the drama.

Oh, the drama, just when it seemed like things should end, there was yet more drama and more drama. I found myself almost getting whiplash as I read this one. First I agreed with Abby and her attitude towards Travis. I didn’t care for him or his man whore ways. I found his and This book had gotten so much buzz that I wanted to check it out. He was very honest in what he thought and with his girls, yet was surprised by their reactions. For some reason I really liked seeing Abby’s reaction to one of his cast offs early in the book. I got why she didn’t want to have anything to do with Travis, not even as a friend, especially when we learned her background. But even as I say that I thought Travis pestering her was funny, he just plain wore her down, her giving in just to get some peace and quiet. There were times that I was mad at Abby and thought she was a little out of control with what she was doing, then once again I would find myself mad at Travis for something he did, then would again flop over to being mad at Abby. It was exhausting!

I think had Abby been able to get past her past and accept Travis things would have been so much better for them. Of course the book would have been much shorter and not as much to fun to read. Lol

I really liked Abby’s friendship with America. While she didn’t always agree with Abby, America was always there for her with her best interest in mind. She knew Abby better than Abby did and could see things with a little distance. I did hate that America let the drama with Abby and Travis affect her relationship with Shed. I thought those two were cute together.

I am happy with the way this one ended. I do wish that we would have gotten to see Travis’s family’s reaction to their spring break trip though, I have a feeling that would be a hoot.

I was so confused after reading this book, is this for teenagers? or not? The writing are plain (straightforward sentence structures, simple vocab) making this book a breeze to read through. But the vulgarity and sex (but not in the erotic category) in this book are abundance, hence not suitable for teens. Not to mention other negative elements such as fighting and gambling.

I wonder, is this YA novel, or is this not? The writing and feelings are very immature but then there's other elements such as sex, fighting, swearing, gambling. I was really confused and bewildering confused especially at the END of this story.

The story started too quickly, the author waste no time in building the character first before making them fall in love. I quite enjoyed the middle part of this book, feeling that it is progressing into something interesting. Re ...more

It was an easy but interesting young adult love story. It was probably about 40 or 50 pages too long as written, and could have stayed at the number of pages if we would have been able to get a little more into the minds of the characters. I really like Trav's brothers and the Thanksgiving visit. I needed a little more hate for her idiot Father and a little more 'I can't live without you' love from Pidge. ...more
