Shelves: 2021-reading-challenge, four-star-books

This was a great book! I was a little nervous because so many fellow readers were dnf the book. I love the history of Russia. This author did an amazing job of giving you a Russian history lessen, and a lesson on perseverance. I think I would like to reread it someday when my world is slower. I would also gladly read book two.

I enjoyed this book. It is all based on the life of the Count Alexander who was sentenced by the Bolsheviks to live out his remaining life within the confines of the metropolitan hotel in Moscow. It's interesting to see how the author tells the passage of time and what affect that has on the count as time goes on. I do wish a bit of the ending was expanded upon, but otherwise it was a good book. ...more

While I always appreciate Towles’s writing style, this book didn’t hold my interest. It took me a surprisingly long time to get through. The characters were endearing and the writing was clever, though.
