I have trouble with hyped books. Divine Rivals is also a book during a war (and because of the situation in my parts of the world, it is a book that I had some hesitation to pick up.)
The truth is, I like the premise and the characters. Iris and Roman are enemies to lovers who are done well. I like books with magical realism and the idea of the three magical typewriters.

This was alright.

It was so hyped on bookstagram I really wanted to love it, but ultimately I felt like the plot was pretty clunky and the magic system felt really underdeveloped. Seriously, the magic for 98% of the book felt totally tacked on, like it was added after the whole book was already written? There was some pretty prose in here but even the romance felt a little awkward in that the climax of that part of the plot doesn't feel like the climax of the book overall, so it really didn't co ...more

3.5 stars.. Enemies to Lovers book. I LOVE the aspect of magical letters. I did not see the twists in this book coming until they were upon me and was mostly pleasantly surprised. I don't usually like war books, but the characters were wonderful, and too perfect, just like I like them. But horribly, war wasn't romanticized and some awful, scary scenes were described. It's some tough topics for a YA book. But softened by the fantasy aspects of the book.

Yg suka tema musuh-jadi-sayang bolehlah dicoba novel ini. Perkembangan karakter Iris dan Roman dari musuh kemudian menjadi sayang juga ga ujug2 gitu. Ada pertemanan, perpisahan dan rekonsiliasi yg bikin pembaca akhirnya ikut bahagia dgn kisah mereka.
Sayangnya di jilid satu ini blm ada penjelasan lengkap tentang dewa2 yg menjadi latar belakang kisah cinta Iris dan Roman. Aku masih penasaran sama kisah dewa Dacre dan Enva.

This is one of my favorite Netgalley reads so far! I don’t remember the last time I enjoyed a book so much. I found everything about this story excellent, the characters, setting, pacing and I can’t wait to read more by Rebecca Ross.

I thought this was going to be fantasy with some romance. But the fantasy is thin, the world and events unrealistic. Now I know why I instinctively disliked the term Romantacy.
