Kylie Standley | 43 comments Hello Team Ti!

My name is Kylie, and I will be your Captain for this year’s Tower Teams 10! (The 10th-anniversary edition, wohooo!)
This is my second year of TT, and it will be my first year as a captain (eek!). Fortunately, I am in great hands, as both of our co-captains, Tammie and Laura, have plenty of experience in this challenge :)

Let’s start with getting to know everyone! I’ll leave some questions down below for everyone to answer, so we can all get some discussions going and learn more about one another!

- What is your favorite genre(s)?
- What is/are your favorite author/authors?
- What book has left an impact on you?
- What is a book that you despised?
- What are some fun facts that you want others to know?

All right, know a little bit more about me. My favorite genres are fiction, mystery/thriller, and certain romance books (I have been recently getting into this genre). I am truly open to anything, so if you have any recommendations feel free to share away! My favorite authors would have to be Fredrik Backman and Virginia Woolf. Two books that have impacted me (I am truly indecisive and just couldn’t pick one) would have to be The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein or Anxious People by Fredrik Backman. Both books are still imprinted on my mind, and I cried equally while reading both (always a good indicator of if a book is good). A book that I truly hate might be an unpopular opinion, but it is The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck (or anything by John Steinbeck, for that matter). Just thinking about this book makes me internally start curling up, and I wish I could forget those final lines of the book. Lastly, for some fun facts! I am based in California, I have a soon-to-be one-year-old puppy named Sky, and I am unhealthily obsessed with Dutch Bros.

Now, it’s time to get to know all of you! You are welcome to answer all or any of the questions above. I’m thrilled to get this challenge started with you all ;)

One Sentence Audio Critic | 214 comments 📚
Hi!

Favorite genre: Historic romance

Favorite author: Diana Gabaldon

Book WITH Impact: Outlander ...brought be back to books in late 2021 and Atlas Shrugged / The Grapes of Wrath..from my youth for their ideological impact

A Book Despised: The World According to Garp...hated the book, but loved the author when I met him....and I also despise most badly written shifter books...but will read them for the team if needed

Fun Facts: not FUN, but bio below
📚

I am Benita, Goodreads (GR).user name "One Sentence Audio Critic."

I am a semi-retired university prof/administrator, living in Alabama.

While I read tons of fiction, primarily romance, in my teens, I stopped reading fiction in grad school and did not start again until partial retirement from the university. I started pleasure reading, again, in late 2021 when I got tired of waiting for the next season of Outlander and did the entire Gabaldon series in 5 weeks.

Now I do several books a day, primarily historic romance (favs...Scottish time travel & Regency), cozy mystery with a touch of romance, contemporary romance (preferably rom com) and paranormal lite (sweet funny witches, bickering Ghosts, etc).

I lost my husband to covid a few months ago (late 2022) and have turned to (GR) challenges as grief relief.

Never done this challenge before and I am within my first few months of GR challenges, so I will make mistakes. But, I do many books a week, most with a senior cat in my lap.

Happy to add things to my Tower self...just send me a link.

👭👫👭🎉🎊🥳
Go team!

Benita

Tammie | 4553 comments Hi Team Ti!!

I'm excited for us to be reading together...I've done this challenge many time and have made many discoveries in reading friends and great books/authors along the way. I look forward to chatting with all of you!

To answer Kylie's questions...
- What is your favorite genre(s)?
My list says it's contemporary romance...but I read just about anything. I used to say I hated non-fiction...but I've dropped that byline. I still don't favor horror, but have had a few exceptions through BOMs.
- What is/are your favorite author/authors?
This is a difficult questions...I have quite a few. Old school I'd say Suzanne Brockmann...she adds a social twist to her romance and she's one of the authors that really got me reading. I also love Kristen Hannah...I haven't read that many of her books yet, but I'm working on it.
- What book has left an impact on you?
Small Great Things and I Liked My Life: A Novel are books I believe EVERYONE should read. I could add about 10 more to this list if anyone is interested.
- What is a book that you despised?
Push, Claire Wallis...several years I ago I attempted to read this book...it was extremely upsetting to me being tagged 'young adult' with the content of this story.
- What are some fun facts that you want others to know?
I live in Missouri with my husband and have 2 grown children. A couple of grand-dogs that I love too! I travel when I have time and my real estate business is slow...which is now! I recently returned from 2 weeks in Israel and have several trips upcoming...and I'm addicted to books :)

Benita you've been through some tough times...I'm sorry for your loss.

I love Diana Gabaldon! Her books are just...incredible. I'm impressed with 5 weeks...it took me years to read those :) Wondering when it will come to an end!

You can't mess up with GRs and your team is here to keep us all in line :)

message 15: by Chales (new)

Chales | 257 comments Hi everyone..

I'm Rachel but everyone calls me Chales (rhymes with Hails). I WISH I COULD READ SEVERAL BOOKS A DAY!!! That's impressive! I'm an electrophysiologist by trade and work pretty busy weeks. Reading is my escape once my kiddos are in bed. This is my fourth TT challenge! Last year I sucked because I didn't understand the challenges (aren't you glad I'm a doctor *facepalm*) but looking forward to being a part of it all again this year.

I love fantasy and sci-fi, historical fiction, romance, mystery. I don't really do anything paranormal. My favorite books are The Pillars of the Earth and East of Eden (same Kylie..Steinbeck is the best!). I just finished a historical fiction book called Beyond That, the Sea which was absolutely one of the top books I've ever read.

I've got a library with many unread books in it. Buying books and putting them on a shelf and never opening them is my toxic trait haha I'm really looking forward to getting some of those read and off my shelf! I have a friend who takes donated books to sell for the local cat rescue so this challenge and that cause are what's motivating me!

Looking forward to being a part of this team with all of you! I love recommendations...can't wait to see everyone's impression of different books and maybe diving into them myself.

message 16: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments Hello everyone!

My name is Keely and I am from the UK. I currently work night shifts so I'm around the most during the night here. I will be in Norway for the first couple of weeks of the challenge (I travel on the 3rd) but that shouldn't hinder my reading. I am hoping to change jobs so the night shifts thing might not last the whole challenge.

I will read almost any book, or at least give it a go. I tend to prefer books with a bit of mystery or adventure to them. I've been working my way through classics so you will definitely see me read a couple, probably a Dickens as they tend to be nice and long too.
I only set my reading amount to 5 as I will mostly try and stick to longer books for the points. I will of course help out and read shorter books if they are needed or they help us with something we are struggling to find on the minis.
I will also read the BOMs if I can get access to them although I am hesitant about volunteering for DQs, but again I will do it for the team if we need it.

In my free time, I am either playing video games or crafting (mostly cross stitch and knitting) and where I can, I will listen to audiobooks while doing things.

I don't think I've been on a team with anyone here before (forgive me if I am wrong), but feel free to send me a friend request if you want to and I look forward to playing with you all!

message 17: by Lory (new)

Lory | 629 comments Hello!

I am excited for this challenge to start as well. I've found a lot of fun with challenges as they make me look for books that I may not normally find.

- What is your favorite genre(s)?
I can't really pick a favorite genre, but I read mysteries (cozy as well as thriller), historical fiction, and fantasy a lot.

- What is/are your favorite author/authors?
I agree Kristen Hannah is amazing! We've read a few of her books for my work book club and they have all been great. I also very much enjoy Sharon Shinn.

- What book has left an impact on you?
There are so many! I would say Pride and Prejudice as it opened my eyes to Jane Austen.

- What is a book that you despised?
I hate to say it but I did not likeOutlander. I also barely made it through Les Misérables which is unfortunate as I love the musical.

- What are some fun facts that you want others to know?

I have 2 daughters (2.5 year old and 3 month old), so I am still figuring out my sleep schedule. The only good thing about 2 am feedings is that I can read a little on my phone while she is eating :). I used to travel frequently for my job, but now I tend to stay in the office.

Looking forward to finding some new and unusual books to read!

Tammie | 4553 comments Welcome All!

Keely brought up BOM (Books of the Month)
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

There's 3 posted for May and the DQs are still up for grabs.
You'll find a listing on our Worksheet
...and here in the main thread -> https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

So far I've signed up for Kings of the Wyld...jury is still out but it was nominated by GRs so I'll give it a try...my library wait is long...fingers crossed it comes in.

BOM reading is a huge advantage for teams that participate. Consider it if you like finding new authors to read.

message 19: by Stacey (new)

Stacey (boydsmom) | 1377 comments Yay! We're open!!

Hello all! I'm Stacey, and I promise I don't usually use so many !! :) I have lost track of how many TTs I have done, but it was my gateway challenge, so I'm always excited when it starts.

My go-to genres are romance, UF/romantic fantasy/paranormal and mystery/adventure/thriller. I will (and have) read just about anything in the name of a challenge though I will try to avoid cozy mysteries and high fantasy if possible.

My favorite authors currently are Mariana Zapata, Kristen Ashley, and Ilona Andrews, and I do love an old school Dean Koontz now and again.

The only book I remember hating aside from some truly awful romance wrecks is Tess of the d'Ubervilles. Hated the MC and of course it was for English class so we had to talk about it for weeks so that cemented it.

I'm a physical therapist in a trauma hospital in Raleigh, NC and reading is my escape from what I deal with at work each day. I tend to read for fun, for stories and for characters and not so much for beautiful writing and deep meaning.

I have the 2 BOMs for May borrowed from the library already. I will try to read as many as possible, but I tend to fall behind on daily reading, so probably will not volunteer for questions.

message 20: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments I now have the 2 main May BOMs on Audible. I have volunteered for DQs so we have at least someone, but I've never actually written any before. I will probably read the backroom BOM but may not be able to keep up with that one as it is right in the middle of when I am away so I won't be volunteering.

Lindsay♫SingerOfStories♫ (lindsaysingerofstories) | 707 comments Hey Team!
I'm excited we're open and looking forward to getting started! This will be my sixth Tower Teams and I always look forward to the extra motivation boost of the challenge and getting to know a new team of friends. So here's a bit about me...

- What is your favorite genre(s)? I'm a mood reader so honestly it changes frequently! I like contemporary romance, YA and some adult fantasy, thrillers, cozy mysteries, some sci-fi, some historical fiction, some non-fiction. I also discovered "climate fiction" recently and I have found a couple FASCINATING books!
- What is/are your favorite author/authors? I have recently discovered Fredrik Backman and Sarah J. Maas. Lucy Score, Ashley Poston, and Diana Gabaldon are favorites as well.
- What book has left an impact on you? The Hunger Games has been huge for me for years
- What is a book that you despised? I'm not shy about DNF-ing books that I'm not enjoying so typically I don't read books that I feel a strong dislike towards. A book that I rated 1star though was Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Apparently that's not my kind of humor.
- What are some fun facts that you want others to know? I live in the US. I'm originally from Illinois but I live in small-town Tennessee now. I absolutely love living in the mountains and the warmer weather! I majored in music (voice!) in college but I work from home processing medical records now. My hubby and I have 1 fur baby named Obi and he is so fun!

So out of curiosity, do we know what the significance of the team names is? (are? I can haz grammar?)

message 22: by Laura (new)

Laura | 5524 comments Hi Everybody! I think I've managed to send friend requests to each of you I wasn't already friends with.

Lindsay, each of the team names is Ten in a different language.

Favorite genre: Fantasy/UF/Science Fiction. But I'll read just about anything for a challenge. Except horror. That's where I draw the line.

Favorite author: The last 5 star author I read.

Book you despised: Handmaid's Tale; Book Thief - for both of them I felt they fell far short of the hype.

Fun facts: Last month myself and my 5 youngest kids packed up and moved from California to North Carolina. We're settling in and loving it. And I'm loving finally having my books unpacked after nearly a year!

message 23: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments Laura wrote: "Lindsay, each of the team names is Ten in a different language.

Omg, I never realised that's what it was! I'm even more excited that I'm on this team now as 'ti' is ten in Norwegian (and probably some other European and Scandinavian languages) and as I mentioned, I will be going to Norway next week. I'm going to visit my boyfriend who is Norwegian and lives there so it is very fitting!

message 24: by Kylie (new)

Kylie Standley | 43 comments Welcome everyone! So glad you're all here :)

Fun fact about the team names. Like Laura and Keely said in the last posts, each name is ten in a different language and Team Ti is Norwegian! Funnily enough, my dad would always, and still, tells people he is Norwegian (even after an ancestry test that proved his statement wrong), so finding out Ti was Norwegian was a pretty full-circle moment haha!!

Keely, Norway sounds exciting! Don't forget to check out some bookstores over there! I recently traveled to Amsterdam and visited tons of bookstores, and they definitely made my book-loving heart happy :)

message 25: by CB (new)

CB (cb33) | 404 comments Hi Team! I’m CB and I live in Northeast Ohio. This is my second Tower Teams challenge and I’m excited to begin.

What is your favorite genre(s)?
Urban Fantasy is my favorite genre these days, although I also read a fair amount of paranormal, space opera, and fantasy romance.

What is/are your favorite author/authors?
Ilona Andrews, TA White, and Nalini Singh.

What book has left an impact on you?
I think I would say The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper, which I read when I was in 6th grade. I had never read fantasy until then and it was a revelation to me. That kicked off a multi-decade love of fantasy, spanning all different styles over the years and also including movies and TV. I’m still kind of angry about that atrocious last season of Game of Thrones :(

What is a book that you despised?
When I was in high school, all I wanted to read at that time were fantasy books by the likes of David Eddings, Mercedes Lackey, and Katherine Kurtz (and I just dated myself), and instead I was forced like every other high schooler to read the classics in English class, much of which I found torturous back then. I remember I particularly despised The Great Gatsby and all its characters, and I just never understood the love of that book.

What are some fun facts that you want others to know?
I’m a mood reader as well, so I rarely plan in advance what books I’m going to read, so I’ll add them to the spreadsheet as I go along. My reading is escapism from the stress and demands of my career in the finance industry, so I’ll tend to drop a book if I’m not enjoying it as it’s generally just not worth my time. I love yoga and find that to be so relaxing as well as good exercise, and I enjoy hiking as well.

One Sentence Audio Critic | 214 comments A little assist please...first time in this challenge..

I see folks on the team mentioning BOM...I assume that refers to GR Book of the Month selections...someone give me a clue...will these be valued books in this challenge? Should I be tracking them down?

I found this jnfo, but a bit confused as to which GR BOM, etc:
For current BOM (Book of the Month) discussions
Writing a day's worth of discussion questions = 40 points
Participating in a current BOM (participating in discussion) = 20 points

(I consume so many books, and have poor vision, so I do most of my books through free library sources; but find that with time, I can get 99% of what I seek)

Once you claim a book on the 'books' tab, you should also...
1. Find a spot in one of the 4 mini tabs too...there are 4...I named them starting with 'MINI'
2. If your book is a BOM, indicate that book in the BOM section as well...BOM books will be in 3 different tabs.

Questions...ask here...we LOVE questions!

I’ll give the BOM Kings of the Wyld a go - it’s not my usual type of fantasy novel, but sounds like it could be a fun read.

message 36: by Vian (last edited Apr 26, 2023 07:45PM) (new)

Vian (vianvamp) | 363 comments Hi everyone, I'm Vian.

I'm super excited for this challenge! Tower Teams was my first ever team challenge, and this is my third time participating.

- What is your favorite genre(s)?
Fiction: I love mysteries/thrillers & horror. I also really enjoy most fantasy and sci fi.
Non-fiction: I haven't been reading as much nonfiction as I used to, but I enjoy true crime and sciencey topics.

- What is/are your favorite author/authors? What book has left an impact on you?
I'm not sure if she's my favorite, but I love Anne Rice.
I've reread the Vampire Chronicles many, many times. It was the first long series I read and it showed me that I did have the attention span to read longer books.

- What is a book that you despised?
I can't think of any off the top of my head. I've not been reading as many books as a used to so if something isn't keeping my attention I DNF it.

- What are some fun facts that you want others to know?
I'm a Theatrical Stage Manager, and I live just north of Atlanta. Right now I'm on staycation, but I'm gearing up to start rehearsals on a new show in the next couple of weeks.
I'm mostly nocturnal, so most of my responses will be late night/early morning.
Reading-wise, I'm mostly a mood reader, but if I can get ahold of the BOM I can usually answer the response questions

Lindsay♫SingerOfStories♫ (lindsaysingerofstories) | 707 comments Kings of the Wyld won't be for me, but I'll probably read The Daughter of Doctor Monroe. That one has been on my TBR for a while. I bought it on a Kindle deal a while back so its just been staring at me.... 😜

message 38: by Lory (new)

Lory | 629 comments I'm going to try and read both of the books for the BOM. They don't have to be read at the same time as the reading questions coming up, correct? I just want to be sure as I can't stick to quite that strict of a schedule!

I can't wait to get started!

I'm Elen (she/her/hers) from Estonia.
I'm excited to read many good books with you all! This is my 5th time participating in Tower Teams.

- What is your favorite genre(s)?
Right now, I read mostly thriller/mystery/crime, and a little bit of fantasy, and sci-fi. Previously fantasy was my main genre to read, but in the past two or more years, I have been in a fantasy slump.

- What is/are your favorite author/authors?
Fredrik Backman, Agatha Christie, and some more.

- What are some fun facts that you want others to know?
I'm a laboratory technician in a hospital (Estonia). I read and watch tv shows purely for fun, comfort, and escapism - just to shut down my brain from work and science.

2022 read books that I would recommend are: The Lost Village, Angels & Demons (whole series), Ragdoll (series), The Cruel Prince (series)

Darren Compton | 143 comments Hi I am Darren from the UK.

This is my third Towers Channel.

- What is your favorite genre(s)?
I enjoy reading Science Fiction/Fantasy, Horror and I am trying to read more Non-Fiction
- What is/are your favorite author/authors? I have read most of Stephen Kings Books, and I have just started reading Brandon Sanderson and I have enjoyed reading Lee Childs and Jim Butchers Book

- What book has left an impact on you?
I can't remember the book, but it was a futurist book but the one idea that it stayed with me, was about problem solving, it said something like most people look at the biggest problem and try to reduce the effect of the problem, which leds to a small improvements, that get smaller each time, but what you should do is imagine the world without that problem and try to create that world. The two books that have stayed with me lately are Weapons of Math Destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality and Threatens Democracy and Demon Freaks. The Math book was memborable due to work, as one of the idea is that what a business wants to measure is difficult to measure, so they pretend to measure a proxy and assume it is the same thing. The Demon book was memorable for the certain group of villians I had not read it before in a book but there is a group of satanic golfers who are fighting against a splinter group of other satanic golfers and demon hunters from a fast food chain
- What is a book that you despised?
I can normally find something in a book that I enjoy but my Sister was working with a development editor and wrote a book and got introduced to an publisher who wanted to publish the book, but because the publisher wanted to change parts of the book, she refused and self published the book, I read the preview and it was hard to read and had some grammar issues, so I bought the book and gifted it to my mum.

- What are some fun facts that you want others to know?
I once worked for about 6 months in the cigarette industry and I found the people their really paranoid. Only one of my friends mentioned anything about it and it was a joke that as a non-smoker, I was trying to make the product better so that I can get rid of him, but during the interview the interviewer was really concerned that I was about to accept a job in a industry that no one liked and during a staff night out, anyone who asked anyone in group what they did was told we were engineers for something other industry.

Sure! I'll say I'm one of those people and not just someone who hoards books for the sake of hoarding them LOL Looking at my shelves, I don't think finding colors will be a challenge at all!

Chales | 257 comments Can we reserve spots now and start reading May 1st or do we have to wait until May 1st to put anything in the spreadsheet?

Rachel | 418 comments Good morning everyone! I'm Rachel from the Washington, D.C. area. I've been a frequent participant in TT challenges over the last few years and I'm looking forward to playing with you all. This is one of my favorite challenges because it forces me to read books for mini-challenges, etc that might otherwise remain buried in my tbr for years to come.

My favorite genres to read are non-fiction history, mysteries, romance, and suspense. I'm trying to read more classics as well. I'm not a big fan of contemporary romance and I loathe the current trend of cartoony covers done in pastel colors.

Work keeps me pretty busy during the day, but I'll try to check in as frequently as possible. I look forward to getting to know everyone!

I thought that too but I can't put anything into the spreadsheet yet! I'll be patient but I've got my purple and red books ready to go LOL

Lory | 629 comments I was adding some books that I already have from the library - so will definitely be trying to read in the next 2 weeks. For the Rainbow, what percentage do we need the color to be? Is it more than 50% or 75%?
