Shelves: genre-fantasy, genre-romance, on-my-bookshelf, theme-military

This book was very visceral. The author seemed very interested in the smell and taste of the story. I actually quite liked it. It was descriptive without turning into purple prose.

For example:

She listened to him leave the office, no doubt to gather information for his article, his footsteps muffled amongst the clack of typebars and the murmur of voices and the swirl of cigarette smoke.

When this series popped onto Instagram, it caught my attention as everyone was reading it. I then added the book to my wishlist and it was brought for me as an Instagram book gift. In this last part of 2023 and into 2024, I have started to get back into reading a bit of fantasy though of course it now has its terminology of "romantasy". Divine Rivals is historical meets fantasy but in a way could be set in a modern world but for me, it still held a strong historical feel to the book. The book st ...more

I thoroughly enjoyed my time with this book. I loved the characters. I loved the romance. I loved the writing style. The only issue I had was a slight lack of cohesion. It felt at times like it was trying to tell two completely different stories at the same time.

I thoroughly loved this book and can't wait to read the next book. I ordered it from Book of the Month so I'm excited to see what happens in the next book. I loved the way this book ended.

At first I wasn't a big fan of Iris or Roman but the more the book went on the more invested I got into these two characters. I was also really invested in the side characters, Attie and Marisol.
