Oh, how I love this book! I’ve recently been revisiting all my neo favorite novels in audiobook format. Having just reunited with my personal library, I was looking forward to rereading Ready Player One but decided to try listening to it instead. I’ve only embraced nerdery in the past few years which explains why I recognized the vocal stylizing of Wil Wheaton as Fawkes from The Guild but still didn’t realize we was Wesley Crusher. Regardless, Wheaton brings to life the saga of Wade Watts and hi ...more

I really really enjoyed this book. I do have to say, I don't think it would be for everyone. Those that enjoy classic video games, and the 80's...SCORE! Total nerd-dom to the max! I thought the story line was captivating and fun. Although, I'm sure the concept of an all-encompassing virtual reality has been done many times before, I enjoyed the way Cline surrounds you in the reality he created through his story-telling. I felt like I was playing the 'Oasis' myself and hope that there is possibly ...more

I may be biased, but the 80s was the best decade for movies, music, and video games. This book was a great homage to that time while still being a great sci-fi gamer adventure. Bonus points because the author was born same year I was!

Loved it!!!! The 80's references were awesome. Felt like i was back in my childhood for some parts of the book. I also loved the larger themes... teens who didn't want to communicate with eachother because they were worried about how they looked, corporate takeover, the deterioration of society because of technology, overpopulation, overuse of resources. ...more

It was an enjoyable read with all the 80s name dropping and the universe building (universe within a universe) - pretty great stuff. I listened to the audiobook and it was amusing to hear the references to the reader and other authors. If you enjoy Cory Doctorow, this book may be up your alley too.

Loved it all the way until the ending. It was weak and a bit of a letdown after such a great story.

I listened to the audiobook and liked the narrator's sound effects for pacman and Max's stuttering voice. If not for these sound effects, I would have rated the book 3 stars because most of it was too predictable and calculated and full of geeky 1980's references.
The story line was unique to me and the world-building was different. I enjoyed the attention to detail (Ultraman's fighting stances) but they sometimes made things too obvious (the books falling over in the chat room).
