Natalie Why why why are the Twilight books on here?

message 252: by Cristina (new)

Cristina I personally find fascinating that most books in this list are of English-speaking authors... I can understand reading books in your own language but there are thousands of excellent books out there that I'm sure have been brilliantly translated. For those of you commenting on what Americans should read, "Twilight" is the least of your worries! XD

message 253: by Zeina (new)

Zeina It's freakin' interesting!

Victoria Jack wrote: "Shakespeare on the list 3 times? Only actors should read the great William Shakespeare, the rest of us should watch the plays."

As everyone else, you are entitled to your opinion. As an actor (years ago) and holder of a BA in English, I disagree. The language of Shakespeare enriched and helped form our own. So many of our phrases started as his, most people don't even know he said them first.

I read my first Shakespeare as a child in my Dad's old college textbooks. I developed a love of language and literature that has lasted all my life. Read the plays aloud, if you wish. My little brother and I did. But read them.

message 255: by Parvathi (new)

Parvathi I just can't understand why "Twilight" is on this list... I think that book doesn't even deserve to be on this list among such timeless classics

message 256: by Aasinathena (new)

Aasinathena I loved this list..its a great discovery. Thank you.. !!!

message 257: by MiA (new)

MiA I don't understand how a book like "TWILIGHT" exceeds literary masterpieces by Dickens, Voltaire and Steinbeck. It's really baffling how the books in this list are ranked. Even SunTzu's "Art of War" proves to be a great value against a box office teen-smash hit.

I believe you can in secondhand stores and from places like amazon.com.

Although you are right about the Bible being influential and about Twilight being a cultural phenomenon, I fail to see how Twilight fits into the specification "Books that encourage thought" Afterall, it is written directly beneath the list title, so shouldn't the books within the list actually conform to this specification?

The KJV is on the list at number 24.

Jeanie Jackson I loved the first 100, have read all but two and approve a lot of them. So-so on the second 100 but still some great books there. That's as far as I have gotten. F

Yes, you can. That post is a couple of years old and the poster obviously hadn't done a lot of searching.

message 267: by Jejede (new)

Jejede Every book on this list that I've read is terrific . To choose a favorite is like choosing which one of your children you love best! Thanks for the list.

message 268: by Zoe (new)

Zoe I have read a lot of these books but wouldn't mind reviewing them again. Very good books are on this list.

message 269: by Mimi (new)

Mimi I cannot express how thrilled I am that "The Book Thief" made this list! It's probably one of the most underrated books I've read!

message 270: by Tim (new)

Tim Boyle Green Eggs and Ham seems a tad high. I mean it comes right after all these books with political allegories and such. I guess rhyming box with fox could help a few countries out.

message 274: by Marsha (new)

Marsha For the life of me WHY WHY WHY is Twilight on every list? Yes, fun for teens, but REALLY?? It's gawdawful.

message 275: by Tawnya (new)

Tawnya Debbie: Yes you absolutely can still get uncle tom's cabin! For a short while in the eighties because of the racism in it and the heavy subject of slavery it was banned from many schools and sales dropped off like a dead fly. But today people read it as a fictional study of the subject. I in fact just got the book a few months ago and read it. It is amazing and will make you cry. One of the few books I bother to actually own.

FYI: the mormons do use the king james version.

Barnes And Noble (www.bn.com) lists dozens of copies/editions/variations.

message 279: by Tayna (new)

Tayna Tavares I'll use this list, except for the religious part, as a guide to future acquisitions

message 280: by Bu (new)

Bu No one should leave high school without having read Ivan Turgenev's "Fathers and sons". No one.

message 281: by Aura (new)

Aura Did I miss Dylan Thomas' collection of Poetry? Hard to imagine it would
not be on the list. And Caitlin Thomas' book about Dylan is beautfifully
written as well.

And, thank you for this list. Encouraging!

message 286: by Gabby (new)

Gabby Ugh. Why is TWILIGHT on here? It's horrible. I read the first few chapters online and I will never even look at it again. A vampire romance novel shouldn't be on a list of books everyone should read.

message 288: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina Debbie wrote: "i dnot think you can get a copy of uncle toms cabin any more" Yes, you can. Most public libraries have it. Just go to WorldCat website and you can find the libraries in your area that have a copy.

message 289: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina Faera wrote: "I skimmed through this list and there are some very horribly written books on it. Like Twilight and the Bible for instance." You think the Bible is horribly written? Wow! Do you not realize that the Bible is a integral part of much of Western Civilization. A person can't call themselves truly educated in the humanities if they have an antipathy for the Scriptures. If one keeps an open mind, it can be a beautiful piece of literature, particularly the Psalms and Songs of Solomon.

message 290: by Zachary (new)

Zachary Seriously, if these are books we should all have read - we must all be idiots. Get rid of the trash.

message 291: by John (new)

John I got my free copy of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" from Kobo eBooks - I believe that Gutenberg.org has it also -

message 292: by Robert (new)

Robert The Mormon version of the Bible IS the King James version. Whoever posted "Mormon version of the bible" was probably a very ignorant Mormon. Same with the Book of Mormon, although it is of historical interest for being the most influential, laughably poorly written book (considering the large number of Mormons out there).

Jan C wrote: "" I skimmed through this list and there are some very horribly written books on it. Like Twilight and the Bible for instance. "

message 293: by Shanela (new)

Shanela This is an exceptional list i really really appreciate it!!!

message 294: by John (new)

John Shanela wrote: "This is an exceptional list i really really appreciate it!!!"Without a doubt, this is a very good listing of books for the learned reader, as well as young readers just realizing the joys of flipping those pages. I just started "Uncle Tom's Cabin" - it gives insight into the fabric of people, both good and evil. Enjoying it immensely -

message 295: by Cami (new)

Cami Debbie wrote: "i dnot think you can get a copy of uncle toms cabin any more"

You should be able to from the library or amazon.com. Even if it's a banned book, you can still find it. Also thrift stores usually have a wide variety of books.

Cami Jan C wrote: "" I skimmed through this list and there are some very horribly written books on it. Like Twilight and the Bible for instance. "

Just for clarity sake, Mormons use the King James version, it just has additional footnotes.

Very true, and just because a book is "horribly written" doesn't mean it hasn't had a measurable impact and deserve consideration.
