I've been saying this about Atlas Shrugged to a lot..."

Really? I've read it and feel that it was as irrelevant then (20 years ago) as it is now.

Why?

message 403: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Twilight because of its popularity, not for any literary value; Book of Mormon simply from an evangelical standpoint. Some people like to push their own beliefs onto others regardless of the format.

Leah Kirk Debbie wrote: "i dnot think you can get a copy of uncle toms cabin any more"

Yes you can. Barns and Nobel classics even has an edition of it. I read and bought it a year ago for school.

Although I like the Twilight Saga, I agree the writing is not great and undeserving of this list.

message 408: by Jason (new)

Jason Should rename this list... books that are incredibly dull and should be read before bed to put you to sleep

message 409: by Therealbadkitty (new)

Therealbadkitty People honestly believe that any human being should read Revealing Eden?

The King James Version of the Bible is on the list, it's on the first page, actually.

So by your logic we should read everything that's a cultural phenomenom, no matter how bad it is? Just because a bunch of kids which have never read a book in their life other than Twilight and Harry Potter consider it to be a must-read or one of the best books ever doesn't mean all of us have to read it.
If everyone is jumping into the well, should you jump too?

John King Liz wrote: "Stop already! We now know that Uncle Tom's Cabin is still in print! Way back on page 1! Enough is enough!"

Thank God someone said it, although I still don't think anyone realizes it yet. I would hope after the OP's posting from five years ago she either found a copy or abandoned all hope.

Daniel Leavitt Who wrote this list? A middle school English teacher?

message 428: by Daniel (new)

Daniel Leavitt Jan C wrote: "" I skimmed through this list and there are some very horribly written books on it. Like Twilight and the Bible for instance. "

Excellent point. You can really tell the spin of the writer of this list.

message 429: by Daniel (new)

Daniel Leavitt This list looks like it was compiled by a middle-school English teacher. Seriously, Harry Potter?

message 430: by Ben (new)

Ben Jammin Yeah yeah, I know "To Kill a Mocking Bird" and "Catcher in the Rye" are culturally significant, but how can you have "Twilight" or "Hunger Games" on the list and no Tom Robbins?

message 431: by Kenneth (new)

Kenneth Clark Debbie wrote: "i dnot think you can get a copy of uncle toms cabin any more"

You certainly can. B&N publishes their own edition of the book. You can get a kindle edition as well.

message 432: by Scott (new)

Sanz Keep on reading about Health and Nutrition folks! It's the best way to be healthy and have a sound mind! Cheers to all!
Thanks

message 434: by Savannah (new)

Savannah Blue Is this a joke? I hardly think Twilight deserves to be on this list. Let alone still be in print. No offense, but that book is tasteless.

message 435: by Keith (new)

Keith CARTER DRACULA ?

Mag Saad I skimmed through this list and there are some very horribly written books on it

message 439: by Geraldine (new)

Geraldine why in high heavens is Twilight included in this list?

message 440: by Stephen (new)

Stephen Lindow I feel a generic, anthologiz-y and lackluster list.

message 441: by Blackaria (new)

Blackaria Twilight???? REALLY??

message 442: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Religious texts provide so much historical and literary context. It is entirely possible not to value a book as religious truth, but to see tremendous value in it culturally. Say what you will about the Bible. Even if you think it's a ponderous, miserable tome, I think it ought to be required reading for anyone who wants to more fully understand the Western world.

message 443: by Kel (new)

Kel This list honestly helped so much when I had to choose an out-of-class book for Honors English.

message 446: by Debra (new)

Debra Debbie wrote: "i dnot think you can get a copy of uncle toms cabin any more"

Yes, you can. It is available in bookstores, libraries and online bookstores.

Debra Jan C wrote: "" I skimmed through this list and there are some very horribly written books on it. Like Twilight and the Bible for instance. "

Twilight somehow always makes every list. Along with The Book of Mor..."

I've never read any of the Twilight books nor will I. I gave the King James Bible only three stars because of the ponderous language. The New King James version is very readable although I do prefer the New American Standard Bible.

message 448: by harriette (new)

harriette du plessis sparrow why is hush hush not top of that list???!!!!!!? :):)

message 449: by Effiewilliam (new)

Effiewilliam Many of the books on this list are true treasures. It also reminds me that I have yet to read many of the classics. A great building block for a future reading list. Books bring me back to different periods of my life recalling places, people and my inner state. I just read a book that I think should be on this list if it is not already Buddha in the Attic.
