I concur

And if anyone is even thinking about reading the notebook, don't. It's the most poorly written book I've ever attempted to read. I only got about 15 pages in before I wanted to cut it up.

And if anyone is even thinking about reading the notebook, don't. It's the most poorly written book I've ever attempted to read. I only got about 15 pages in before I wan..."
wow, i'll take your word for it...

Vote for 'em anyway so hopefully no one else will make the same mistake, lol

Amen. Let's pity party together.

well these aren't the worst books ever... just ones we don't want to read. some of them we're also tired of hearing about and would probably just have ignored except they became pop culture phenomenons.

i mean, i won't lie that i'm surprised people disapprove of the inheritance series. and i know there are religion-related disputes regarding the da vinci code. i also know that the twilight series stinks as a piece of written literature. and, his dark materials series in a sense a written form of protest against the church (unbelievable guts, pullman has).
also, from what i've heard, the the secret really is something to read; and, heck, the purpose driven life is a must read. oh, and the the fountainhead - it's used as a textbook and reference in some schools (don't ask which; i don't have an exact name, sorry).
my bookshelf will show, just to say, which ones of these aforementioned books i have actually read, and like for that matter. this comment is not a "who-put-this-don't-read-book-list-here-where-the-book-i-like-is-an-entry" form of protest. i repeat - not. i put up this post because i wish to stand up for the multitudes who know how to take in - quoting from most negative criticism i read and hear; ridiculous, idiotic, cheesy, badly-written excuse of a book.
it's not that because we don't like a book, we have the right to downgrade it - because in our personal opinion it is "the worst book ever" - which, it isn't. we just don't like it. of course, there are exceptions, but i'm not here to discuss that.
and, mind, huh, there may be at least 8 books in this list that i like, but there are more than twice as much as that in there that i do not like, do not intend to read, (guiltily) despise, but do not intent to deprecate either. and to say that i was itching to vote for my said don't-like's is quite an understatement (but i didn't vote, haha).
subjective my opinion may be to most, but that's why it's called opinion. because it's relative and sujective - but, still, in some ridiculous way, objective. it lets you see the other side of the story.
sorry for the ridiculous length, and to those people i may have offended..

you lost me... i'm not sure where your argument lie. Are you saying lists like this shouldn't exist?
this isn't really a worst books ever list you know that right? this is just a "Popular books that everyone always tells me I should read, or just books that are extremely popular and I will never read list" (as stated above). It's more or less a list for those people who are sick of hearing about it, you know?

uhm...the list is titled "Books I have no intention of reading" not "Books that suck and should be burned" It's an expression of personal opinion, not a sweeping, all encompassing decree about the value of each book. It's an opinion which, as I understand, is the purpose of a social networking site built around books.

you for the win

Thank you for your opinion and your comments. I appreciate that you're open-minded and see reading in general as just good. And I agree. But although folks have pointed out that this is just a "ick, not interested" list, I actually would be okay with a list of "this is a terrible book no one should read" because some of the books on this list just espouse hatred.
I wouldn't put Twilight on that particular list even though I hated it--I don't think it's an evil book, I just think it's bad--or the Secret (just enough already) but Ann Coulter's books are so full of venom and hatred that I just don't understand how anyone can read them. (There are other conservative writers who I respect, who are intelligent and respect others. It has nothing to do with my disagreeing with her politics.) Part of freedom of speech and freedom of the press is freedom of protest. I defend her write to publish her rhetoric but I also defend my right to tell everyone I can that she's a hateful, mean person and no one should read her books. It's because I want literature to be friendly and educational that I believe that.

Harry Potter and The Hobbit...

This list has nothing to do with best seller lists or literary plaudits. It's about personal mind blocks or genre dislike or even *please sit down for this last bit* viewing the author as a bad writer. It would be fair to say that a lot of these books have been over promoted and not only by the publishing houses either, or maybe the author has been spamming groups. I believe all of these rational arguments were stated previously, so give yourself time to wander through all the comments and your outrage will be quelled.

As for Stephenie Meyer, I didn't like her stuff in the beginning either. I'm in the middle of the third one now and I still roll my eyes occasionally, but mmmm I'm ashamed to say- they grew on me. Kind of like a fungus. I like mushrooms too.
Now why shouldn't I be able to say which books I think sucked?

@Irene and Bettie,
I love you both you are amazing, thank you for saying this.

I'm with you BookGeek. Meg Cabot's formulaic supernatural series are silly but mildly entertaining. I read them all. But I think I would vomit if I read Clique and Gossip Girl type stuff.

They probably read it to find out more about the man and learn how never to let people like him get into power again.

Yes Susanna - Intelligent readers need to know every angle of these subjects as blinkered thinking has never helped any cause. Awarding stars though, that's quite a different matter.

I agree- I devour anything on the Holocaust I can and I plan on getting to Hitler's book one day. Part of learning is learning everything- getting one side of it isn't going to teach anyone anything.

I agree but I think there is a limit to how much I am expected to be able to take. I can only read so many books in my lifetime and stories of the Holocaust make me ill. So I've read several but I cannot stomach propaganda especially that espousing hatred. I will leave that to the historians who can digest it and spit it out into less odious books for me to read. I do not want to have that negative energy spinning around in my brain. I wouldn't sleep for weeks.
So I commend you for your diligence and agree that someone has to read it and make sure we never forget, but it will not be me.

No one should ever "expect" someone else to read something. I hope you didn't take my comment as I "expected" that of you!
It is definitely very hard to read about and while I have and do read many, there are breaks needed in between for me also. So even someone like myself, who gets any book I can find on the subject, it's still something I have to control or I'd probably go crazy.

"
what?

I didn't read Ender's Game ..."
Ender's Game was brilliant, IMHO, and better than the later books. And has now come true in a way, with our unmanned drones fighting part of our war for us.

I plan on reading The Kite Runner whenever I get around to it but it's been sitting on a shelf for a long time now.
The others that I know of I do agree with though!

No, of course I didn't think that. I was just struck by your comment and how what you are doing sounds like a nightmare for me! I'm actually impressed!

I think it is a nightmare in a way- I don't remember what got me started but my mom is from Germany and I'm half German so it's a little close to home. My grandfathers fought each other in the war and then became family afterwards. It's just so outside of normal and that actually goes with what I read.
I think that says something doesn't it?! LOL

Hahahaha!! I've never had the desire to read that one myself but I have friends who have.
