A Goodreads user asked Kerry Wilkinson:

Did you grow up wanting to be a writer?

Kerry Wilkinson Sort of. I knew I wanted to do *something* that was a bit different.

When I got a bit older, into my twenties, I had a thing about writing for television. I really admired (and still do) people like Ricky Gervais / Stephen Merchant (The Office) and Simon Pegg / Jessica Hynes / Edgar Wright (Spaced).

They didn't wait for TV companies to come to them - they wrote their own shows and decided to do it their way. Ricky Gervais is one of the most famous comedians/actors in the western world - but nobody knew who he was until after he was 40. Simon Pegg's been in Star Trek and Mission Impossible, not to mention co-writing Shaun of the Dead and the like.

They carved their own careers and I love that. When I turned 30, I decided it was time to give things a go myself - and so I did.

I had idea how to write for television, no background, no contacts, but I read books (obviously) - and so that's what I started writing.

Thanks for asking.
