Very often by reading good fiction. I find YA books some of the most fresh and original stuff around. I have particular favourite themes - love Victorian settings, love something that leads me on a journey, love well-drawn characters. Beautiful prose is always inspiring and can lift my spirits like nothing else. I just feel so happy when in the presence of a great storyteller and builder of worlds. I also find ideas come to me when walking in nature, listening to people talking, watching films, being sensitive to atmosphere and surroundings. So many things are inspirational - everything is useful to the writer. I love colour too, it can build pictures in my mind...

My daughter is doing her Author Report on you. She would like to ask "What are the names of your animals?" She read that each of your animals has "brought magic into your life" and she'd like to know more about them. Also, "How long did it take for Sue to write her first book."
