Goodreads asked William R. Pope:

How do you get inspired to write?

William R. Pope I was never sentimental before writing this book. Now I get choked up thinking about how long I've owned my wallet--when I bought it where it's been with me etc. I know it sounds pathetic, but sometimes this flood of emotion helps me write. Of course, it depends on what I'm writing. Sometimes I just have a good idea and I'm not sure where it's coming from except I'm usually thinking about a story or two I'm working on.

I've noticed that, when I'm writing because of some emotional response I've had, I have to be careful to check and double check my work because sometimes it's not very good.
