Abby!
Abby! asked Emily Tesh:

Hi Emily! May I ask in what year (roughly) Silver in the Wood is set?

Emily Tesh The answer is '18-something-something'! It's more of a fantasyland setting than a real historical one, so I grabbed stuff from all over - early rail travel is 1840s, but the townscape Tobias experiences near the end is straight out of Austen. I think I was reading Persuasion when I wrote it, and that was published in 1817! And Silver's expensive coat and Mrs Silver's pearl-handled pistol both feel Regency to me, which is even earlier. The 'four hundred years ago' setting of Tobias's past is equally vaguely mediaeval-to-Tudorish without getting worried about precise historical details. Time is something pretty fluid for Tobias anyway.
