Goodreads asked Angela MacRae Shanks:

What mystery in your own life could be a plot for a book?

Angela MacRae Shanks My grandfather was illegitimate, his mother never naming his father. Her husband abandoned her five years before my granda was born and sailed for Canada. He is named on my granda's birth certificate but cannot have been his father. This was more about avoiding scandal, I imagine, and perhaps about eligibility for poor aid from the church.
My granda was a remarkable man. He fought in WWI in East Africa as a sergeant in the Seaforth Highlanders and even learned some Swahili. It would be interesting to imagine who his father might have been. Perhaps someone who, for reasons of class or propriety at the time, could not marry my granda's mother despite loving her. Perhaps this man was later my granda's commanding officer and had to send him into battle.
