Goodreads asked James L. Thane:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

James L. Thane I'm not sure I'm qualified to be giving advice to any other writers, aspiring or otherwise, but I think the most important thing you can do is to put yourself in the chair and write every day. That's the way you learn the craft and hone your skills. I think it's also important that you read a lot, think critically about the books you read, and learn from other authors. I never cease to be amazed by people who tell me that they're thinking of writing a book and when I ask them who they read, they respond by saying, "Oh, I don't have time to read; I just want to write a book. Sorry, but it doesn't work that way...
