Michaela asked Melanie Dickerson:

Hi, Melanie! You are one of my favorite author's and you write both of my favorite styles: fairytale and Regency romance:) I have not read all of your books yet, but I am getting through them (very quickly because I can't put them down!) I was wondering--What do you do when you don't know where to go next in a story? And have you ever simply dropped an idea that wasn't working out?

Melanie Dickerson Hi, Michaela! When I don't know where to go next in a story, I will sometimes brainstorm with my family or a friend, talking out what I need to happen next and getting ideas from them. And I did once drop an idea that wasn't working out, when I was starting to write a sequel to a book that still has not been published yet. That was several years ago. These days I only write books that I have a contract for, and I always have at least a general idea of the characters and the plot.
Thanks, Michaela!
