I love this question! First - I've done a blog with some specific information about writers who want to self-publish. It's here: http://terrireidsrighthandlady.blogsp...
Now, just general advice. Write! Every day! Write.
Write down your ideas - don't think you'll remember them.
Finish one project before you start another one - it's easy to write five chapter ones, it's harder to write five consecutive chapters in a book.
Have someone who will be critical read your manuscript for you. (Not your mom because we all know she will love it no matter what!) But, also not someone who will say. "Well, if I were writing this..." That's not helpful because they aren't writing it - you are. You need a partner who will tell you were your plot line falls apart, where they lose interests, where they get lost and when you forget something (like dressing your character before she runs out the door.)
Believe in yourself - if you don't believe, why should your readers.
Get an EXCELLENT proofreader/editor before you publish.
Be grateful for your readers every day - because they are the one who allow you to do what you get to do.
Hope this helps!!! Thanks for asking!!

I am reading Buried Innocence right now and wow, what a tough topic to cover in a book! It is so well handled but I have to ask you, how hard was it for you to write? Some of the statistics you wrote about are mind blowing and terrifying, is there someone you work with who helps you with this type of research to get it factual?
I truly love this series but as hard as this subject is I think it is one of the best.
