Nick and Nora Charles of the Thin Man series, I think. The sophisticated banter between the two is just marvelous. Nora gives as good as she gets. And Nick, the detective who suddenly, through marriage, finds himself in the world of socialites gives us the view of the foibles of this class of society through the eyes of an outsider. Hilarious stuff.
