Who is your favorite fictional couple, and why?

James L. Thane My favorite fictional couple is Matthew Scudder and Elaine Martell, created by Lawrence Block in the Matthew Scudder series. The two first met when Matt was a married cop and Elaine was a working girl. They saw each other periodically and then lost touch until a crisis brought them back into each other's life. From that point on, the relationship blossomed into something complex and very interesting. I really like the way the two relate to each other and the sober, sensible approach they both take to the relationship. It's been a while since Block wrote a new book that included these characters, but even if he never writes another, I will always enjoy going back to touch base with them.
