Probably, or improbably, Nick and Nora Charles. Few people today know who they are, but they were the pattern on which detective duos were designed for decades. Although the detective series soon became "buddy stories," it was Nick and Nora Charles who patterned couples in film and novel in the 1940s and 1950s.
