Most of your stories seem to involve the human race tripping and falling flat on their face in the near future. Is there a reason behind this creative decision to put your stories into this context rather than, say, having humanity reach the stars and fall on their face out there?

Nick Cole I believe that we must come to the end of ourselves before we can do what we're meant to do. I hadn't really thought about your question before you asked it... but you're absolutely right. I do that. So... maybe I'm in the coming to the end of ourselves phase of my writing. Writing about people coming to the end of themselves. I do expect that I'm heading into a sea change. Maybe the big space opera and fantasy destiny novels are next. In other words: what I will be, I am now becoming.
