I've been thinking for a long time now that it would be nice to have a craft thread as I know that there are several crafters in this group. It would be nice to share what we are working on as well as news about free patterns or kindle books. We could also share links to blogs or pages that we have (I know that Jay-me has one so must find that!) We could also help each other out with pattern queries, etc.

I'll pop back and chat about what I am doing a bit later, thought it would be nice to just open the thread and get ideas.

Knitting, crochet, patchwork, quilting - can't wait to hear about it all!!

Am cooking dinner now, so I'll load up some photos afterwards.

I have a facebook page which iniatially I set up to link to my shop on Etsy, to promote it, but now I've started to share free patterns on there - I've found some fantastic ones online. Couldn't understand at first why they would share such good stuff free, but then I realised that it all helps promote and sell the yarns that they suggest using..

My facebook page - I'm always glad for new *likers* as it helps with visability.

This is one of the best sites that I've found for free crochet patterns. You have to register with the site to use it, or can just log in with facebook.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Stickied as promised. :)

I might just get back into crocheting this winter. Used to do a lot of crocheting back home in the winter. I always had a blanket over my legs as it was so cold so I thought I may as well be creating it.

Too hot to crochet in Africa. Sweating fingers makes crocheting rather difficult.

I can't read a pattern though. I just know one stitch. If I can even remember it.

I'll need help please!

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments I have no place here as I don't craft but I thought I'd share a funny story about my Grandmother.

When I was younger she was pretty adamant I should learn to knit. As I was the only female grandchild that she could stand to be in room with (My Gran and I are somewhat similar in our ways *coughs*) she thought it was her duty to pass on her very talented ways. She made my parents buy knitting needles and all the wool and then sat me down, tried to teach me for 30minutes then declared to my Father;

"If she didn't have a mouth on her like a sailor and a brain like Hitler I'd be wondering who the fuck gave birth to her. She can't knit for shit."

She then proceeded to confiscate all the supplies and told me never to even attempt it again or I'd loose an eye.

This story is told time and time again! My always politically correct Grandmother ;)

The classic granny square is probably the easiest to crochet - that's what I started on. You can just make one huge square which grows bigger and bigger until it's the size that you want.

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments She was an amazing woman. She used to attack people with her walking stick if they went too slow in front of her wheelchair.

I know we shouldn't have favourites but she is my most missed deceased relative in terms of conversation.

Actually she was the person who got me into reading. She bought me books, books and more books when I was a child :D

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments I learnt to knit when I was young. I just couldn't bear the thought of my sister being able to do anything I couldn't :)

message 13: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments I still own a few things she did over the years. She was a very talented woman and could knit, crochet and do all sorts. Also a baker, damn that woman could bake.

Actually this thread may be of use to be as I really hope to learn how to do origami for no other reason but that it looks cool.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments There's a boy in Dave's class, from Korea, does amazing origami. Only eight years old.

Made me a bouquet of flowers and a load of other stuff the week I taught Dave's class.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments My lovely friend came over yesterday and asked a favour. She wanted a sort of shawl but not a big one, she tried one of my shrugs and nearly went home with it so I've got to make her a shrug just like mine. Its perfect. Off she went, then came the phone call, Can you make it bit deeper, then another call, a big baggier, then another call can I make it crossover, then another call she didn't want lacey holes in it. In short nothing like my shrug but as she's brought me some beautiful wool and alpaca to make it in - its a delight to knit with. I'm up to the armholes on the back already.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Hmmm. Think I'd be up to her armholes...

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Yes - she's from Paris and bit of a bugger really.

I'd love to see a photo of that when it's finished!

Ok, several of you have seen this already, but this is the latest thing that I've finished, which was for my mum.

http://www.goodreads.com/photo/group/...

My brother-in-law liked the look of it so wants one himself, but done in the Portsmouth football club colours. This is the yarn that I've bought - I also have black already, and have now realised that I can use a little read as the home kit has red socks!

http://www.goodreads.com/photo/group/...

Not quite sure how this is going to turn out using these colours!! I've found a useful online pattern for letters of the alphabet, so I want to incorporate some of those into the blanket as well.

(First time I've tried to include photos in a post, so not sure how well this will work..)

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Ravelry is a good site for browsing knitting and crochet patterns, they have free and paid. Some of them are quite odd.

My great great aunt used to knit christening shawls that were so fine they could near pass through a wedding ring.

I was giggling over Elle's account of her Grandma. My Grandma was from Northern Ireland too. She was also a character. One of her favourite sayings was "Bless his heart and poke his eyes out!" She once pinched the bum of one of my cousin's boyfriends! Towards the end of her life she lived in a nursing home and I used to visit from time to time and take her out somewhere nearby in her wheelchair. It was a real pain when someone parked their car half on the pavement - people who do that don't realise what a problem it causes for wheelchair uses who can't pass on the pavement. Grandma got cross about it and asked me to give her my keys so that she could scratch the paintwork of the car (I didn't give them to her!!) She was fiercely loyal and would have done anything to protect her family! I was proud of her as she kept her independance right to the end. She was crippled with arthritis so had to spend her later years in a nursing home, but she was the only one there who would phone dial a ride off of her own back to get a taxi to the local supermarket - where the brilliant staff would help her around so that she could buy her paper and sweets. She's quite an inspiration for pushing herself to the limits when other people would just give up and vegetate. Is this a characteristic of the Northern Irish? I don't know many of my irish relatives, other family members moved to canada and I still have one great aunt, grandma's sister, there who is the last of that generation..

*must stop procratinating and get on with the typing that I'm supposed to be doing...*

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I can tell you now my granny does not push herself to do anything, except shopping. My mum an aunty do everything for her, including her washing, ironing and making her bed. She's a lazy wee scut.

message 30: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments Both sets of my Grandparents where like your Grandma Karen. Fiercely independent up until the end, in one particular case it was a bad thing but mostly it was an inspiration. :D

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments My Granny was a churchgoing pioneer, she lived with us when we were children and used to give us a row for swearing (Pig?),however every Saturday afternoon she used to watch the wrestling on t.v. and turn into a fiend!Yelling at Mick McManus "NIP HIS BLOODY ARSE"!

I made two cards this afternoon; a new home one for son and partner then a new job card for son.

Kay (Golden Girl) | 2193 comments Sarah you are so talented with all the crafts you do ,would love to see some photos of your cards you make ,so perhaps we will with this new craft thread

Looking forward to seeing what everyone's up to.

And don't forget to do your Christmas banners & upload pics. No excuses.

message 35: by [deleted user] (new)

I would love to see photos too, Sarah! - it's quite easy to load them up to the group photos, but I still can't work out how to include them in a post!

I spent quite a while yesterday evening trying to crochet intials but wasn't getting on well with the pattern and had to unpick both attempts! I've found the same pattern elsewhere on the net but with clearer charts so I'll have another go soon.

Anita | 3313 comments Granny's are wonderful aren't they ! Both mine died when I was very young but I had a stand in Granny who taught me various crafts and got me in to reading, I have such fond memories of our time together.
I can no longer do any crafts as my fingers won't do fine work but I will put some photos on for you to see.
Off to look at your photos Sarah, I already know how lovely they will be.
Pleased son getting settled.

I'm reading a nice book at the mo.

The Girl on the Wall: One Life's Rich Tapestry
http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Girl-Wall...

It's a memoir but it started life as a tapestry worked by the author in which she's put her memories. Later on, she wrote a book of her memoirs based on the tapestry. It's quite pricey now but I bought it in a sale over a year ago. I'm enjoying looking at her tapestry circles and then reading the memories that go with each piece.

A craft thread - bravo!
I make enamels; glass melted and fused onto copper at high temp. You can see some here:
http://1513fusion.wordpress.com/ename...

The enamels bring in more beer-money than my novel.
