Karen Lowe | 1338 comments So glad you've got the cake done and the bunting Sarah - what a great idea! Now I'm thinking about doing 'Merry Christmas' as bunting for the Christmas cake!
and yes, I did manage to spend a bit at the NEC, though it was all obviously essential stuff! Just amazed at some of , well most of, the cakes in the competitions. Couldn't believe they were, well, cakes!
A lot of very talented people out there.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Just catching up with you clever lot. Some lovely things made, Pat what did you make your bedspread in? Wool? and what ply?

Pat () | -245 comments Made in Stylecraft DK Acrylic well pleased with it. Used in the region of 35-40 colours. Was afraid it might be too many, but I think it worked in the end.

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Argh, first serious frost today and I'm still frantically knitting my winter gloves! can't find last year's and had to do others for those in the household who had worn theirs out. Just bought a needle case from Etsy which reads 'Winter's Coming - Knit Faster' which now seems very ironic!

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments Love that! wonder if they've got any more - it'd be perfect for my sis-in-law!

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments oooh just found it, Lexie! I also LOVE that yarn bag - Knit me knit me knit me!!!

message 2007: by Lexie (new)

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments I know - funnily enough, I happened to see the maker carrying one of the bags in Aberdeen last summer and thought it was great, but thought no more of it. Then came across them by accident. They seem good quality, too: I've ordered one for a friend for Christmas.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments They'll be ideal for my daughter too :)
I like the "I like big balls and I cannot lie" mug, but she might be shocked if I bought her that. Oh well, perhaps I'll just get it for myself

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Daughters are so easily shocked by their parents!

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments Have ordered a bag (knit me with your knitting sticks) and the needle case - makes me smile so hope Sis-in-law will like them too!

Pat () | -245 comments First meeting of new quilting group done. They seem a very friendly group. I think I will like it there. What is more important to me is there will be a new quilters time after Christmas. I should get the help I need then. I am hoping it will make all the difference to me. Yey!
Better crack on and finish the jumper I'm knitting before I need to start quilting.

message 2015: by Karen (new)

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments Delighted you found a quilt group Pat. I'm sure it'll be a big help for you. Our group have had some really inspirational speakers, and plenty of opportunity to shop for yet more fabric...!

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments Actually got round to making the covers for my Advent scrapbook! all ready for December now. Just everything else to do! the pics in the gallery here and I've put the template on my blog. https://www.goodreads.com/photo/group...

Pat () | -245 comments Thanks Karen, I hope to keep it going this time.

Are we doing a banner for the group this year?

message 2018: by Lexie (new)

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments A what? How would that work?

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments Lexie wrote: "A what? How would that work?"

Magic!
We've done one the past 2 years and it's on the forum's home page for December. There's a pic of last year's in the gallery https://www.goodreads.com/photo/group...
Basically I put up the template for people to download and decorate as they wanted - oh, and they need to choose a letter out of 'Merry Christmas'. They then post their pic, I print them off and make an actual banner and take a pic of that - tho my photography skills are a little basic! There weren't so many of us doing it last year so I thought it might have had its moment.
Any other ideas though would be good!

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments Finally started on my Christmas cards today! I did a white pastel on black paper pic of Salzburg in the art class and hve used that for the cards and done a cut-out version. Have put it on my blog karenlowe.co.uk - so late getting started on them this year, I blame the nice weather!

I still have to start cards, will have to get some done this week though. I have some fancy cutting dies to use, and new ink in the printer so hopefully will be able to crack on.
Just bought myself a bundle of books that I want to read, I might try to resist and save them for over the holiday.

message 2028: by Lexie (new)

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Nearly done mine (not written, just made): this year I made a felt panel which I photographed and then had printed to stick on to the front of the cards. I'll pop it on my blog nearer Christmas as I'm also using it as an e-card this year - trying to be sensible and not overwork! Still trying to finish a few presents, though.

message 2029: by Lexie (new)

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Oh, I think I've finally worked out how to upload a photograph on to this!

https://www.goodreads.com/photo/group...

My, I'm slow!

message 2030: by Karen (new)

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments Aah, Lexie, that's really cute! Lovely Christmassy colours.

message 2031: by Karen (new)

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments Looking forward to seeing what cutting dies you've got, Janet. Am hoping to finish a few more cards later tonight, but at the mo am keeping an eye on a big batch of mango chutney - priorities!

message 2032: by Emma (new)

Emma Faragher | 301 comments Hello again, it's been ages as I've had exams but I'm back to crafting now. Tomorrow's mission, cowl neck going out top with little fluttery cap sleeves and a velvet skirt in some kind of A line possibly bias cut and around fingertip length (shortest I am willing to wear). I'm thinking of having the skirt sit at the waist but do you think that will look odd with a shorter skirt? And any tips for cowl necklines? I don't think the fabric will stand up to anything else without serious reinforcement or a higher neck line and I want it for parties (well, clubbing, lol)

I came home for between exams and results and left all my card stuff in sheffield so I'll not be able to do any cards until next week! I just couldn't decide what to bring without filling my car with craft supplies.

message 2033: by Karen (new)

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments Hope your exams went well Emma. Glad you're back crafting. I made a couple of sleeveless tops with cowl necks - I remember it took loads of material! and it was tricky to get the point of the insert to sit tidily, but I do love that style. As for the skirt... short, A-line... watch out for the gales!

message 2034: by Lexie (new)

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Do you mean at the waist as opposed to further down? Depends a bit on your figure, I'd have thought - if you'll excuse the remark! I've been known in my youth to wear fingertip length skirts but mine were always on the waist which with my rounded (ahem) figure was rather more flattering - emphasised the fact that I did have a waist!

Where did you get the velvet? I was looking for some recently and couldn't find it on the high street (I like to be able to feel it rather than buying it online).

message 2035: by Emma (new)

Emma Faragher | 301 comments fabricland.com It's british cotton velvet, was about £5-6 a metre I think. Don't remember exactly. You have to phone them up to order but they have an online site. It's rather badly designed but it's got their prices on. lol. The fabric is beautiful though, I dyed a load of it teal for my elsa costume but ordered about a metre and a half too much! The bit I have is still royal blue but I may dye it burgandy later on if I feel it's too bright. And I tend to put things on my waist as I have rather larger hips and a small(er) waist. I only want a bit of sway to it, so hopefully it shouldn't react too badly to the wind, especially with the current forecast!

message 2036: by Lexie (new)

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Sounds lovely! I'd definitely go for waist level.

message 2037: by Karen (new)

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments You'll have to post a pic Emma!
Love velvet tho never have sewn it

message 2038: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Hello!

I'm really jealous of your ability to make clothes, Emma.

I learnt to crochet recently :o) I'm trying to make a wee bunny rabbit toy.

message 2039: by Emma (new)

Emma Faragher | 301 comments Sewing is quite easy. Its all about changing 2D shapes into 3D shapes. and putting puzzle pieces together.

I messed up the first skirt and made it too big. Thought the second would be too small but since I keep making things too big I finished it and it fits really well! Tights, but not too tight. I'll post a pic later today or tomorrow when I take one and figure out how to upload it.

My ability in knitting or crochet is not so good, lol. I always drop a bunch of stitches as I go along.

message 2041: by Jay-me (Janet) (new)

Jay-me (Janet) | 3784 comments My grandma was an amazing crocheter, she would crochet with a very fine hook and sewing cotton. But she wasn't a knitter at all. I remember struggling with a pattern and having too many stitches on the needle. She told me to just push the extra stitches off the needles.

I got new ink for the printer, but now it is refusing to feed the paper through.

message 2042: by Karen (new)

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments Looks fab - well done, Emma.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Lovely skirt Emma. Did you say you'd dyed the velvet? It's a beautiful colour.

I love sewing and knitting. Knitting in winter, sewing in summer :)

message 2044: by Lexie (new)

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Oh, yes, I used to be seasonal till I got swamped with knitting a few years ago! But it's much nicer to knit in the colder weather.

message 2045: by Emma (new)

Emma Faragher | 301 comments I didn't dye this velvet, I dyed the parts I used to make my elsa costume to a teal colour. Thinking of using a red dye to get a burgandy look for this one though, and maybe doing a bag to match. I've got some new heals that should be a similar colour if i can get it right.

I've also found both pink and red jersey fabric during my search for candle making moulds. Just waiting on wicks now but might have to make a Christmas dress.

message 2046: by Karen (new)

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments OK so no craft work over Christmas... but... I spent most of Saturday tidying and reorganising my nest/craft room! Soo pleased, can actually see carpet now, and have elbow room!
Chucked out piles of hoarded bits of card and paper to the recycling boxes.
Any plans for crafts this year?
At the mo, am focussing, slowly, on invites for daughter's wedding.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments I'm well into the winter months knitting frenzy. Nearly finished a poncho of my own design from two large rectangles - I made one last year and liked it so much I'm doing one in a different colour. Next project a cardi from bargain wool from Abakhan.

message 2048: by Karen (new)

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments Yey! I remember ponchos! crocheted one while I was at college rather a long time ago, and it was really warm

message 2049: by Lexie (new)

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Making a large knitted patchwork blanket for our guest bed, in reds and greens. Also resolved to knit more hats for seafarers (Mission to Seafarers have basic patterns for hats, balaclavas, socks and mitts for seafarers from warmer climes who end up in, say, Aberdeen, and aren't quite dressed for it!). Also doing tapestry. Also have to stretch and mount the church tapestries (scary). Also knitting socks on the train. I think that's all for the moment!

message 2050: by ✿Claire✿ (new)

✿Claire✿ (clairelm) | 2602 comments I cross stitched a picture of our cat for my Mum for Christmas which I really enjoyed. Think I'm going to aim to finish some of my crochet and sewing projects this year :)
