Jim | 21809 comments Just passing on the result of my in-depth research over on http://jandbvwebster.wordpress.com/

Looking at my various blog posts, the one I did on Horse-burgers is still just the most popular, but 'Marks and Spencer knicker adverts' is creeping slowly into second place and in a couple of weeks will almost inevitably be the most popular.
Most weeks it gets a couple more hits because people use it as a Google search term

It hasn't been translated into book sales through

Just wondered if anyone else has seen certain posts getting far more hits that you'd have thought

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 7935 comments I think we know the answer Jim, and it relates to popcorn ;~)

message 3: by Robert (new)

Robert Spake (ManofYesterday) | 328 comments I had a sharp spike in views for my recent Iron Man 3 review.

message 4: by Katie (new)

Katie Stewart (katiewstewart) | 817 comments I just had a spike, for no particular post because I haven't posted for a while, but when I checked out the feeding sites, I found someone had used Google to find "naked Indian men" and been directed to my blog. I don't know why.

No, really! I don't!

message 5: by R.M.F. (new)

R.M.F. Brown | 2124 comments Ferret racing usually draws them in, especially in Yorkshire or Wales :)

message 6: by Sara (new)

Sara Boyd (saraboydauthor) | 1211 comments My 'Django Unchained' review had a spike. With Robert's comment, I think I should do more film reviews.
When I don't do film reviews I'll use Kate's 'No, really! I don't!'s brilliant idea and tag my posts as 'naked Indian men'

message 7: by A.L. (new)

A.L. Butcher (alb2012) | 1608 comments That reminds me I must start doing some reviews.

I am getting a few comments about shared links and reader interviews.

message 8: by Robert (new)

Robert Spake (ManofYesterday) | 328 comments I imagine it's best to do film reviews about ones that have just been released. I tried doing obscure movie recommendations a while ago and they didn't get much action lol.

message 9: by Sara (new)

Sara Boyd (saraboydauthor) | 1211 comments Yes, the ones that are just out it's the best, before most people see them.

message 10: by Robert (new)

Robert Spake (ManofYesterday) | 328 comments We'll see if the reasoning holds true when I do my review of Star Trek Into Darkness in a couple of weeks.

message 11: by Sara (new)

Sara Boyd (saraboydauthor) | 1211 comments Haha, yes, let me know.

message 12: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21809 comments I must admit it never really occurred to me to do book reviews. Always felt that because I put myself forward as a writer, people might be looking for a subtext and not see me as unbiased.
Anyway I ranted about peoples tastes on my blog this morning so feel better :-)

message 13: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments My film reviews always get the biggest spikes (hmm, haven't done one for a while...). Book reviews only get a mild flutter, and anything on my own writing seems to drive people away!

message 14: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21809 comments Certainly the more I write about writing, the less people read it.
I suspect that reading about writing is something writers assume readers like to do, but we assume wrong.

I know the feeling!

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments I think book reviews by authors are really interesting because it tells us something about the things that affect your writing style. Perhaps I don't mean reviews...

It would be interesting to have a thread where authors list their top three favourite books (not their own of course)

Rumour has it you're a moderator, perhaps you should start one :-)
I'll join in

message 18: by David (new)

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 7935 comments Me too.

message 19: by Sara (new)

Sara Boyd (saraboydauthor) | 1211 comments Just the top three? That's a difficult one...

message 20: by Robert (new)

Robert Spake (ManofYesterday) | 328 comments I know my three already.

message 21: by Sara (new)

Sara Boyd (saraboydauthor) | 1211 comments Already???? I need like... a week to make up my mind.

message 22: by Robert (new)

Robert Spake (ManofYesterday) | 328 comments I'm being ruthless with my choices!

message 23: by Emma (new)

Emma Faragher | 301 comments How can you chose just 3! I might read another one next week that tops them. I could do 3 most read books. (just by looking at the state of the books themselves I suspect)

I regards to most popular posts. Mine was actually one where I posted some tid bits from my next book and a poem giving hints about the series. (It's going at the start of book 2). I have no idea where my blog is most linked from as I don't understand the statistics!

message 24: by Robert (new)

Robert Spake (ManofYesterday) | 328 comments I only found out my blog had ways to track statistics last week lol. I did wonder what the little bars were.

message 25: by Sara (new)

Sara Boyd (saraboydauthor) | 1211 comments I'm a bit like Emma, have no idea about stuff like that. Do you have Wordpress or blogger, Robert?

Yes. I have blogger and something's telling me I should have wordpress but can't be bothered with the hassle of moving... :-(

Is that something Wordpress? If so they're probably biased...

What's wrong with blogger?

message 29: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments You can get stats on Blogger too.

message 30: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21809 comments The stats can be fascinating, you discover what people actually read.
No matter how brilliant your prose, how deep, how meaningful, what draws them in is search engines looking for Marks and Spencers knicker adverts

The stats are rubbish. Haven't explored fully but I think wordpress is a bit more flexible?

message 33: by Jim (new)

Madam, I sincerely hope you don't forget your knickers now

Yes, more like it!

message 37: by Robert (new)

Robert Spake (ManofYesterday) | 328 comments Sara wrote:The stats are rubbish. Haven't explored fully but I think wordpress is a bit more flexible?

Wordpress is pretty easy to use. There are supposed to be plug-ins and stuff to help customise things but I haven't quite worked out how to use those yet.

message 38: by Emma (new)

Emma Faragher | 301 comments I find blogger to be very easy to use and understand. It's only the where people got there from with the list of websites that confuses me. There are a lot of different gadgets too. But then I've never tried wordpress so I can't really compare

message 39: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments I find I get a lot more spam comments on my Wordpress blog compared to the blogger one. Actually, I've never had a spam comment on blogger, and I've had 3 already this week on Wordpress...

message 40: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21809 comments I've had spam comments on Wordpress but they have all be trapped in the spam file and I've quietly deleted them

message 41: by Robert (new)

Robert Spake (ManofYesterday) | 328 comments I took the liberty of starting the 'three most influential books' thread here http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

:)

message 42: by Michael (new)

Michael Brookes (technohippy) My guest posts seem to get the biggest hits.

And a tip for bloggers, if you're not sharing your posts on StumbledUpon, then you should. It's boosted my hits quite a bit.

message 43: by Sara (new)

Sara Boyd (saraboydauthor) | 1211 comments I'll try that!

message 44: by [deleted user] (new)

My blog posts that get the most attention seem to be opinion and news pieces targeted at my core readership (climbers and hillwalkers). Basically anything relevant and content-heavy seems to hit the mark, for example:

message 45: by Philip (new)

Philip Whiteland | 3394 comments I happened to mention Foyle's War in one post ages ago and I've had a steady stream of readers (particularly in the U.S.) ever since!

My jokes get worse by the day!

Hahaha! I hate Spam.

message 49: by A.L. (new)

A.L. Butcher (alb2012) | 1608 comments Spam is nasty stuff. I have only had one but my blog is new. Lol I knew someone that used to start all the announcements with "FREE BEER!" that got people's attention:)
