Angela | 1934 comments Lyn I see re-read and reread, but not read. Am I missing something?

message 52: by Bucket (new)

Bucket | 44 comments Ohhh, I thought the first five pages thing was where the 350 was coming from...

message 53: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments Katie that is right. I will set up a thread for everyone to report their shelves and number of books for each month. You can report as you finish a book.

message 54: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments Bucket, I guess I do not understand your question. The first five pages are where the 350 are coming from.
The easiest way to get there is to go to the main page after you read the book (where it is rated and the summary is given) and on the right hand side it says popular shelves. You want to click on the link that says more shelves:

So go to this page: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/74...
and then if you click on more shelves, it should bring you to this page and use the first 5 pages
http://www.goodreads.com/book/shelves...

Joe Smith (joesmith) | 2 comments cool!

message 56: by Adrienne (new)

Adrienne Teague (ateague) | 409 comments Here's how I did it:

When I read a book, I went to that book's page on Goodreads. I clicked on the more shelves link on the right of the page. I looked at the first page of shelves and cross-referenced it with the "Approved List of 350" we are given.

I printed the list of 350, so when a book matched a shelf, I wrote it next to that shelf on the list.

For example, Pride and Prejudice listed Classic on the first page of shelves, so I wrote Pride and Prejudice next to "classic" on my list of 350.

I just did that for the first 5 pages of "More shelves" for each book.

Does this sound right to all you veterans of this challenge?

Katie | 16 comments Thanks for answering my question Angela!

message 59: by Jason (last edited Jul 15, 2009 05:47PM) (new)

Jason (boltbook) I'm in but I have a couple questions.

First is we are just matching the first 5 pages of the popular shelves for a book. It doesn't have to match our actual experience right? For example, suppose I read a book that I got from the library, but one its popular shelves is 'books-i-own' then I could count this shelf off yes?

My second question is, let's say I pick up a book and notice when I get it that it mark off 6 shelves for me, but by the time I finish the 6th shelf has been bumped to the 6th page of shelves. I assume in this situation I cannot count that book for that shelf.

That's it. =)

Edit:I'm so reading Pride and Prejudice as my first book.

message 60: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments First question- no it does not have to be something that you would have named it... some people shelf books as non-fiction and they are really fiction

Second question-You should not count the shelves until you have finished the book.

message 61: by Jason (new)

Jason (boltbook) What I thought thanks.

message 62: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments Usually your first couple of books rack up a lot of shelves, but it does tend to go downhill from there. Sometimes you may read a book and not hit any shelves...

message 63: by Christina (new)

Christina (chris227) | 75 comments Sounds like fun. When are we supposed to start?

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) OK - the spreadsheet is now ready for anyone who sends me an e-mail. It will keep track of the total number of shelves for you and the number of shelves by book (Just for your own info)

Angela - I ended up misreading one of the items so that it said read, and then deleted two items that were supposedly wrong, when only one was. Anyway - now we truly match. WHEW!!

Joe - I just e-mailed you the spreadsheet and instructions.

message 65: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments Thanks Lyn for putting that together!!

Christina- It starts August 1st.

message 66: by Lisa Julianna (new)

Lisa Julianna (lisajulianna) | 1053 comments Now that I understand I'm definatly trying it...thanks Angela. :~)

message 67: by Carol (new)

Carol (caroldias) Now it is just to wait.... Ohhh August, I don´t want you because my vacation will be over, BUT, come fast lol

message 68: by Joanie (new)

Joanie | 714 comments I've been doing this in the pick-a-shelf group too and it's much easier once you get going. The spreadsheet definitely helps clarify things too-once you start tracking it makes more sense.

Nice job bringing the game over here Angela!

message 69: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments Thanks Joanie! I am happy to be playing again too... I do not purposely read books that will touch the shelves, so I really think that is the challenge. How far can I get without actually trying?

message 70: by Sherrie (new)

Sherrie (syellico) I love this - I haven't done a challenge on this group yet, but definitely want to join this one!

message 71: by Meranda (new)

Meranda (msl87) | 50 comments This looks like fun! I'm in!

message 72: by Tani (new)

Tani | 137 comments Sounds interesting. I'll totally give it a try. :)

message 73: by Manday (new)

Manday | 212 comments I will give it a shot, see how diverse my choies for August are!

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) I second both Angela and Joanie's comments on how fun this is. I, like Angela, don't start out trying to pick books just so they touch shelves, but I end up doing that. Guess I'm just competetive LOL. Even then, I never made it above halfway down the list, but it was fun anyway!!!

For those of you who want a copy of the tracking spreadsheet, I will be leaving on vacation the 24th of July and will not have a computer with me. BOO HOO!! Additionally, I will not be back to the computer until the 11th of August, so if you need a copy, let me know before the 23rd and I will send it to you. There are two versions, one in Excel 2007 and one that is compatible with older versions of excel. Let me know which one you need. My email is [email protected]

I don't have the will-power to do the Summer challenge, I keep reading other books, but this sounds less restrictive. I can't wait to start. :)

message 83: by Mandy (new)

Mandy This does sound like fun. I'm guessing it will all just fit together once it's started so not stressing about the how tos at the moment. Can't wait.

Lyn, I'll send you an email and thanks ☺

Tera (TheBookishAbyss) | 111 comments My first challenge on here....I am in. I thought I would do the summer challenge, but too many other things have come up. This way I won't have to think as much about what I need to read and just enjoy what I have, to begin with anyway.

Liz M Angela wrote: "Bucket, you would ONLY use the first 5 pages of these shelves. "

So, the 5 pages refers to the individual books?

For example if I want credit for "Spirituality", which is one of the 350 shelves listed, The Abstinence Teacher would not count because "Spirituality" appears on the 18th page of its top shelves. However The Erotic Word Sexuality, Spirituality, and the Bible does get me credit for "Spirituality" as it has only one page of shelves, including "Spirituality". Correct?

message 93: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments I am really happy to see this taking off!! I am sure that some of you who do not understand will get the hang of it soon.

That is correct Liz! Everyone is doing a great job of explaining this. If you are confused, there are a couple of posts that explain the challege well. Carole is one of them and I also explained the best way to find the shelves. As far as keeping track, you can print out the list and cross off the items as you go along or Lyn has made a spreadsheet that she is happy to email.
Thanks everyone!!!
