Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments Post 7 got it. Me and my lityle stack of books are ready.

message 254: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Also ~

Y'all may have noticed I read a LOT of books. For the challenge, I was listed as one (or more) books a DAY. I would have done it too, if a puppy hadn't fallen in my lap. Something we were NOT expecting.

I've asked the mods to change my book amount to multiple books a week. I didn't want to let you all down, but I know with this puppy, I won't get a book a day in. I will definitely still get multiple books a week in, even if I'm just listening to my audiobooks at night.

We will, at some point (probably in a week or two) get at least another player to help our numbers so we're back among everyone else.

I'm sorry to do this, I wasn't expecting it. :) But I didn't want to let y'all down. I'm determined to keep the puppy now, since I let the dogs have a bunch of interaction already today.

Just wanted to let y'all know. Now I wish I didn't have to wait until 2 to start reading, both dogs are asleep!! :D

ps ~ thanks for acknowledging the post, Maritza. :D

M Beal | 1680 comments It is ok Karsyn, cute puppy is a good excuse. I have dived into my stack of books and I think I will finish 3 - 4 by Monday.

message 256: by Jen (new)

Jen Sabo | 547 comments I saw it too, post 7. (:

As for number of books, I'm hoping for 3 a week but it might be more like 2. Being a good student is my first priority.

I will probably do better as time goes, I took a speed reading course a couple of years ago. I'm somewhat out of practice, but the more I read, the closers get to my highest word per minute.

message 257: by Vikki (new)

Vikki | 419 comments I may read more than the one book a week especially at the beginning. I am planning to read or listen to a lot of short books in the beginning so there are lots of books to choose from for the goals. As I run out of short books on my to-read list, I will be reading less books per week but they will be worth more points. And I will read all the books of the month since the pages plus participating in the discussions will be more points. Any suggestions from people that have done these types of changes before?

message 258: by Vikki (new)

Vikki | 419 comments I saw Post 7 too, by the way. What does the goal : "Read a book shelved (on the first page of GR) as reviewed" mean?

message 259: by Kerri (new)

Kerri (kerrimcbooknerd) | 1200 comments I saw post 7, as well and I had the exact same question as above.

message 260: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Victoria ~ basically it's people who have shelved the book as a book they have reviewed. It won't be on "Main Page" which is the page you are looking at when you look at a book. It'll be on the "First Page".

For example, go to Shadow and Bone. Where you see the genres, click on "see top shelves". You'll see on there, middle row, 2nd down is "reviewed". That means that Shadow & Bone is shelved on the 1st page as a reviewed book.

message 261: by Deedee (last edited Nov 07, 2015 09:24AM) (new)

Deedee | 626 comments I'm assuming Post 7 "Read a book shelved (on the first page of GR) as reviewed" refers to this:
Review
or this:
Reviewed

probably Reviewed

message 262: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) It's really up to you, Victoria, on what you wanna read/do. BOM is not something that I get involved in, just because I typically don't read the same books everyone else is, so it's all up to y'all if you wanna do them or not.

On one of the Wheel-a-thons, where my team ended up winning, I think we only had one or two people that did the BOM. The rest of us just read a lot. :)

The only thing I can suggest is to pay attention to page counts. For example you have a book that is 347 pages long and a book that's 357 pages long. Only 10 page difference, but a 20 point difference for this. I've gone through my shelves and put books that are 25-50 pages (or less) greater than the lowest point bracket. So I put on the shelf books ranging in pages 161-200, 351-375, 501-525.... and so on, so I'm not reading 100 extra pages for no extra points. Make sense?

message 263: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) I almost added the info about what a "reviewed" book is on post 7. :) I went ahead and did that now. As Deedee mentioned, you can also search "Reviewed" as a genre and it'll pull up books that way.

message 264: by Deedee (new)

Deedee | 626 comments ~ Read a book where the edition you are reading was published on the 27th of a month
The edition of The Great Zoo of China I have was published on Jan 27, 2015 and has 416 pages. I'm planning to start reading it later today :)

message 265: by jingles (new)

jingles Hi team! I'm checking in. I read about post #7.

Can't wait to get started!!!

message 266: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Just about 30 minutes to go! Woo!! :) Who wants to bet the puppy will wake up right at 2pm? :D

message 267: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) And we're off!! :)

Everyone have FUN!! That's what matters most about all this ~ talking books, reading books and having fun!! Any questions at all, feel free to ask. Any weird goals, I'll explain when I post 'em.

What is everyone reading first?!?!

message 268: by Jen (new)

Jen Sabo | 547 comments I'm reading Harvesting the Heart. I'm only 50 pages in at this point. What are you reading?

message 269: by Maritza (new)

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments Going to read Axel for a couple of other challenges I am trying to finish and Wicked Lies.

message 270: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) I'm reading a really interesting book I happened to come across. Anything with "game" or puzzle, I pretty much check out. It's ~

The Serpent (Gamehouse, #1) by Claire North

It's SUPER short, 100 pages even, but I'm loving it so far. Puppy has let me get 40% into it. Hubby is home now though, so we'll see how much more I get into it, if at all.

Tonight for audio I'll be starting ~

The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #1) by Rick Riordan

It was picked for me for a swap. I've never read it and decided now would be a good time to give it a try. I hope I'll enjoy it, I know a lot of people do.

message 271: by jingles (new)

jingles I am starting with Fall of Giants, which will be a buddy read.

message 272: by Vikki (new)

Vikki | 419 comments I just finished The Child Thief and I trying to decide on what to read next... May be Shadow and Bone

message 273: by Deedee (last edited Nov 07, 2015 04:07PM) (new)

Deedee | 626 comments I'm finishing up the two books I was in the middle of when this challenge began. This afternoon I finished Whirlwind: The American Revolution and the War That Won It (2015) by John Ferling -- excellent one book overview of the American Revolution, written for the "educated layman", recommended. The other book I'm about 100 pages in, a science fiction novel called The Ark: The Ark Book One, I'm really liking it so far.

Next up after these: The Great Zoo of China (!)

message 274: by Kerri (new)

Kerri (kerrimcbooknerd) | 1200 comments I'm starting with The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. A few chapters in and I'm really enjoying it!

It is an amazing book, I hope you enjoy it.

Vikki | 419 comments Loved that book!

message 278: by M (new)

M Beal | 1680 comments Finished my first book a while ago The Purple Shroud A Novel of Empress Theodora by Stella Duffy and onto my second. It is pretty interesting if you are into historical fiction. Loosing my will to read due to a warm kitty in my lap and a nice fire.

message 279: by James (new)

James | 28 comments Just finished One Flew over the cuckoo's nest and I honestly didn't enjoy it. Hopefully the next book won't be such a bore.

message 280: by Jen (new)

Jen Sabo | 547 comments Oh no, James. It's no fun to power through books you don't like. Good luck on the next one!

message 281: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Hey Victoria~

Does Child Thief count for the goal of ~ set on a tropical island?

message 282: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Morning y'all!!

I was hoping to finish up my book before the game. Sadly, not going to make it. But only 10% left, so hopefully I can finish it up during commercials and half time.

Things here are a little more settled today. The big dog actually has ignored the little dog for the most part and is just sleeping the day away on her couch, like usual. So, that's a plus!

AWESOME to all y'all who have finished books already. Woohoo!! Tho none of the books read have fit any goal, keep an eye out as we get new ones, we'll slot 'em in somewhere!! :D

Ok, back to my book. It's different and FANTASTIC!! Sorry yours wasn't, James. I'm not one for classics. I hope that the next one you read is stellar!

message 283: by Vikki (new)

Vikki | 419 comments I think the Child Thief could complete the goal of being set on a tropical island

message 284: by Maritza (new)

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments good morning all. will update team post with my book.

message 285: by Maritza (new)

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments finished Axel wow I love me a sensitive alpha male.

message 286: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Awesome, Maritza. Glad you enjoyed it!

Hey y'all, with the Mummy Quests, could you give me the individual quest that your book fits? So you can just say quest 1 ~ frog on cover (or whatever it is) just so you let me know which it's for (if it's not obvious).

Thanks!!

Y'all are doing great. I think Cristina is the only one we haven't heard from. You still with us Cristina?

message 287: by Jen (new)

Jen Sabo | 547 comments Okay, I finished my first book this morning.

Now I'm on to a second. I have a few shorties that are 170 pages, I can read them pretty quickly. But, I also want to read The Lying Game so I'm a little indecisive.

message 288: by Jen (new)

Jen Sabo | 547 comments In the name of getting more points, I have decided to go for a book of the month instead. (:

Any ideas how we can work on getting some of the goals done?

Also, is everyone have a fun/restful/enjoyable weekend?

message 289: by Karsyn (last edited Nov 08, 2015 01:39PM) (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) I think we're ok, goal wise. We had some weird ones to start out with, but they could have been worse. The book I just started has a "review-copy" on the first page, so I'll be able to use that. Deedee said she had the book for the 27th.

I plan on reading a puppy book, so that can be used for learning something new. What's that leave us with? A holiday one, and a character gets into shape. Anyone have anything with those? The holiday one is going to be easy enough, but I'm not sure about that getting in shape one. We can always use a boon for it, if no one comes up with anything soon.

My weekend has been fun, but definitely not restful. I got around 5 hours sleep last night, so that's better than the 2 hours sleep in the previous 2 nights. :) It's been enjoyable though. Having a puppy and a pitbull is a handful but they are getting along well now, so far. :D

How's your weekend been?

•♥•Tina•♥• Maritza wrote: "finished Axel wow I love me a sensitive alpha male."

Loved that series!

•♥•Tina•♥• Sorry I haven't checked in everyone! I haven't read any books yet this weekend, I was supposed to be having a relaxing weekend but it still went by so quickly! But I am planning on reading a holiday romance novel tomorrow to satisfy that goal. I am going to the Blackhawks (Hockey) game tonight so I plan to look and hopefully find a book right after that. I hope everyone is doing well!

message 297: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Thanks ladies! I'm super excited about it, and another reason I asked for my book amount to be lowered. I really hope to help the ladies out a lot.

message 298: by jingles (new)

jingles Congratulations, Karsyn! That is awesome!!

message 299: by Kerri (new)

Kerri (kerrimcbooknerd) | 1200 comments Congrats, Karsyn!! I'm sure you'll do a great job :)

I will have to look through my books to see if I have a thing for losing weight. I can't think of one off-hand. I'm definitely learning things from my current read about cell cultures, so if you don't use your puppy book, Karsyn, we can use that! I'm close to being done. It's really fascinating! If not, I'm sure we can save it for a later goal :)

You guys are so much faster at reading! I aspire to that level!

message 300: by Jen (new)

Jen Sabo | 547 comments Well guys, we are in 7th place. It's pretty good, the top third!

I'm 100 pages into Pretty Girls. It's an upcoming book of the month. I've saved some thoughts along the way so I can post was I was thinking. I'm also hoping someone else starts early so I can chat about it. If not, I might need to collect on those points a couple days after I finish it.
