Darby | 217 comments Admit it, everyone has at least one novel that they basically read to death. Despite how much we love our books, they do get quite beat up. What books do you have that are barely hanging on?
I've got my mothers old copy of Sword of Shanarah (basically low budget LOTR. Total rip off but I love it), and my personal copy of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
Funny story about the Harry Potter, on the inside cover I wrote "This booke belongs to Dardy. I#ound pleese call..." I managed to spell my name wrong AND put the words 'If Found' so close together, it formed a pound/hashtag symbol!

xD Oh that is brilliant, I used to spell my name wrong as well. And... hmm let me take a look at my bookshelf... Where the Lilies Bloom is pretty beat up and is written in a ton, Assassin's Apprentice has a crack in the spine from a scene I re-read a ton of times, I underlined in Eggs by Jerry Spinelli, did the same a couple of John Stenibeck's books, dropped The Book Thief in the mud on accident and it is beaten up pretty bad from being taken to school a lot, yeah I think that is about it. I may have more but those are a few. Though I do want to say I take care of my books... a little too much probably but those are some that somehow I have managed to mess up xD Though I am kind of hoping Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix will end up looking kind of ragged because that is my favorite book in the series. I never owned them but my mom bought that one new for me in my fav edition of that book and I want it to look really awesome and well loved... it has a crack in the spine which I usually hate but I like on the phoenix XD And yeah I know I am weird haha xD Also weird thing is half of those books aren't my favorite which is odd. Only Eggs, John Steinbeck, and Harry I consider my favs out of that list. I mean the others are good don't get me wrong xD

Ella | 84 comments I find it impossible to reread books. As soon as I start reading it again I remember every little detail that happened so I see no point. I do have a few books that I wish to reread once my to-read list is down to a sensible number because they really are my favourites and I'm hoping ill be able to without getting frustrated that I remember what happened. Due to me NEVER reading books they stay nice and neat in plastic boxes under my bed (or if I don't like the book much they go to charity). My only battered books come from charity shops but they are still in pretty good condition compared to some of the books you guys are describing ahaha

Abi | 1 comments Most of my books are pretty beat up. I usually carry a book around with me in my bag so if I get a chance I can read, but as a result they normally end up slightly damaged. All of my books have cracked spines because that's what I normally do before I even start reading it. To me, a beat up book is a sign of a truly loved book that had been enjoyed.

Macayla Dyal (loudandhuman) | 32 comments I think it's wonderful that you read the shannara book. I have the same book as well and I adore the series, both me and my dad do. And you're right I think about almost everyone who calls themselves a book lover has at leastone book that's held together by almost nothing. I'm a little sad to say that mine happens the be the first twilight novel. I was such a huge fan when it first ame out. (I'm currently re reading it because i've read almost all of my other books.) I've read it 6 times, and a handful of other people have read it and the cover is literally held on by some tape. I think there is something fond about having a book in that kind of state. I should probably get a new one, but it's THIS one I love so much XD

message 6: by Ash (new)

Ash (ashiew) Lol I would say a majority of my books are in good condition. Though not including the books I mentioned earlier and the used books I buy. :)

message 7: by Erin (new)

Erin Finlen I love my books and do try to take good care of them...but there is just something about the way a well loved book looks. I have a hardback copy of Inkhear t that the cover is pretty messed up on and I lost the dust jacket loooonnnggg ago. I have all the Princess Diaries book and they are pretty beat up. My copy of Mila 2.0 is completely destroyed. And I have highlighted and notated The Probability of Love a First Sight like crazy.

message 8: by Bex (new)

Bex | 27 comments I absolutely love the book 'Inkheart' to the point that my copy of it is bound by duct tape because it's practically falling apart

message 9: by Darby (new)

Darby | 217 comments Bronwen: yeah I'd imagine those two wouldn't really mix... But good on you for actually testing the theory. I honestly did chuckle pretty hard when I read your comment XD

message 10: by Darby (new)

Darby | 217 comments Erin: I don't even know what if is about Inkheart that causes it to be so fragile. Mine isn't as bad as the the two I mentioned, but it's petty scraggly. It's a paperback, but the spine area is all cracked and weird.

Darby | 217 comments Ooh and Bex *see previous comment*

message 12: by Erin (new)

Erin Finlen So, I was just loading many of my old books into my car to take my new house and my Artemis Fowl first book is literally falling apart. The pages are falling out.

Lisa Kokx (lisakokx) | 24 comments I'm so careful with my books, all of them are in a decent state.

message 14: by Otti (new)

Otti Fae | 47 comments I'm extremely careful with my books, but then I obviously have a few which are falling apart. It's like there's nowhere in the middle for my poor books. The ones I absolutely adore end up being underlined, cracked open on the spine area and written on as well... you can tell I absolutely love Wicked (my fave book btw) and that I've read it a million times just by glancing at my falling apart copy!

I love second hand books too, it gives you the impression they've really been read and have so much history other than the actual story they're telling!

Ainsley (speakingspark) | 10 comments I've developed a bad habit of dog earing pages with quotes I want to remember! But my HP books and other special ones have flat pages, although the spines are quite beat up! My nine year old self spilled fruit juice and ripped part of the cover off PoA - thank goodness for napkins and glue!

message 17: by Ailish (new)

Ailish I have OCD when it comes to books, I can't bend the spine, if I drop books I panic, I think it's because I feel like because I've invested money into them I don't want to ruin them!!

But I have a few pre OCD books, for instance my copy of fire study, it was in my school bag and by my side every second so the plasticky bit with the cover picture is pealing off... Also there is a corner of the spine that has rubbed against something so you can see the pages!!

message 18: by Eloise (new)

Eloise Dyson (eloisedyson) | 38 comments Every original hardback copy of The Order of the Phoenix that I've known (my copy, plus friends and family's copies) are all broken in some way! From the spine missing, to it being torn in places. Does anyone else have this problem, or is it just us? ;)

Eloise Dyson (eloisedyson) | 38 comments Emma wrote: my copy of The Order of the Phoeenix looks the same, it's the most beat up from all my HP books :S"

If you watch Tom and Giovanna's videos, their Order of the Phoenix copy is missing! I keep thinking that it is also too beat up to look good on a shelf

ARGH I am so jealous!! Did you meet her, or did you order the signed copy?!

omg me too i'm very OCD about my books i like to keep them very neat and clean like they were new purchased. However, my dad has these french books that he stole (took and never gave back tbh) from his school library (in 1980's) and the pages are so fragile and yellow and at the time they used to study calligraphy too so my dad took notes on them with his beautiful writing and they are just so precious to me.

message 22: by Ailish (new)

Ailish Belizu: I do like the look of old books but if I have a new book I find it difficult to damage them!

message 23: by Phoebe (new)

Phoebe (phoeboid) My copy of Alice in Wonderland is extremely battered and falling apart, but I like it that way, every tear/crease gives it more character :)

message 24: by Liz (new)

Liz (leaningtowerofbooks) | 16 comments I usually have a book in my purse to read on the bus to work, unfortunately things happen to them. I have two mass-market paperbacks by Stephen R. Lawhead that are so bent and water damaged from the rain. The other ones that are falling apart are almost all of my Harry Potter books. Other than the corners being worn, most of them are have cracks in the spine where the glue or whatever they used to bind the pages has failed, Half-Blood Prince was actually like this when I got it but the bookstore was 45 minutes away and I really wanted to read it! Sorcerers Stone I have in paperback and the spine is peeling and the first few pages are coming detached. Speaking of detached, pages 59 to 274 in my copy of Chamber of Secrets can be removed from the rest.

message 25: by Darby (new)

Darby | 217 comments Liz: lots of my books are stripped covers. Typically meaning my mom stole them from work, but some of them just had the cover fall of. It was nobody's fault it just went pblgtsttt and fell off.

Haha I've reread them so many times there there is nothing left to hold them together anymore... I may have dropped a few books which probably doesn't help much.

message 27: by Abby (new)

Abby Spooner (abigailkspooner) | 3 comments Every single one of my Harry Potter paperbacks has cracked down the spine - I think Prisoner of Azkaban and the Order of the Phoenix are the ones that have completely split and separated through the middle. It was getting difficult to (re)read them so eventually my sister and I begged our mom to buy the hardcover set for us. Best decision ever made! :) Other than that, one of my most-read books is The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. It is an absolutely BEAUTIFUL book in nearly every single way. I have reread it at least ten times and each time I do I find something else to love about it. The poor little thing has taken such a beating that I think I'll have to buy a hardcover and retire my original copy! :) love you Hopefuls x
