Here's the first one:

Lisa Shiroff | 840 comments Although Susie wasn't completely comfortable choosing a monkey for her GYN, she felt he was probably the best option available to her on her health insurance company's approved provider list. Having seen what the Rhino ear-nose-and-throat doc did to her best-friend's nose, she swore she'd stick to doctors with something akin to opposable thumbs in the future.

Lisa Shiroff | 840 comments Uh oh, George. I think I hear Martha outside the door. (For those of you unfamiliar with this painting, it's one of the most satirical ones ever. It's by Grant Wood and I think it's called "Daughters of Revolution" or something like that. Those "women" are really American founding fathers in drag -- Washington, Jefferson and I can't remember the third. Alas, I think I've killed too many brain cells in my youth.)

message 24: by Melki (new)

Melki | 3540 comments Mod
Dead brain cells or not, you are correct, Lisa.

From wiki: Daughters of Revolution is a satirical painting by American artist Grant Wood, who claimed that it was his only satire. The painting depicts the founding fathers as cross-dressing members of the Daughters of the American Revolution standing in front of a recreation of Washington Crossing the Delaware.

I always thought it was in response to THIS incident - in 1939, opera singer Marian Anderson was denied the opportunity to perform in DAR Constitution Hall because of her race - but the painting predates that discriminatory act by seven years.

I'm guessing these snooty old biddies have always needed a good mocking.

The painting was a pointed shot at the Daughters of the American Revolution, a group which Wood found ridiculous and contradictory to the extreme. Calling them "those Tory gals," Wood remarked contemptuously that the DAR were "people who are trying to set up an aristocracy of birth in a Republic."

I used to read a lot of Creepy, Eerie and Vampirella and Frazetta was a frequent cover artist.

I'm glad this picture brought back good memories for you, though it apparently inspired some HARD FEELINGS as well.

Someone (possibly Will from Wales) introduced us to this truly awful song last year. Here's the link if any one wants to suffer listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmL3m...

Me, too. I still have a bunch of those & a few Heavy Metals. LOL on the feelings. I've always thought his girls were great. I like Boris Vallejo's work, but Vallejo's girls grew quite muscular & were always precise. Frazetta has a wild flair for curvaceous, bubbly girls & draws/paints in one stroke what Vallejo built up in static layers. To my eye, that gives Frazetta's an air of action & movement, a realism. It's like the difference between a girl with bed hair & dressed up just before going out. The latter might be traditionally more beautiful, but a slightly rumpled version is more accessible & sexier for it.
