Morgan | 342 comments I'd forgotten about the finger too, until we read it, despite having read it twice before. I'm just glad neither attempt at maiming succeeded.

message 252: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Beguerie (amandabeguerie) | 467 comments Amen, Morgan. Although...the knife cut just right to the bone, right? So he *almost* lost his finger entirely?

message 253: by Morgan (new)

Morgan | 342 comments It did cut to the bone. But it didn't cut THROUGH the bone, so it was healable.

message 254: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Beguerie (amandabeguerie) | 467 comments Right. *shudders* Still freaky though.

message 255: by Morgan (new)

Morgan | 342 comments Yeah. The threatening of the eye had me clapping my hand over my mouth.

message 256: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Beguerie (amandabeguerie) | 467 comments Me too. It's so real and traumatizing for me. Torture is way worse than execution for favorite characters. (What am I talking about, they're all my favorites.) My heart was in my throat.

For me it's maiming. If you kill one of my favorite characters, I'll be mad. Really mad. But if you maim them, I am OUT OF HERE. I will hate the book FOREVER. AND EVER.

Morgan wrote: "Yeah. The threatening of the eye had me clapping my hand over my mouth."

Yeah... I think I was literally shaking and thinking stuff like "No. NO. NO. If this happens I'm giving it one-star and the meanest review I can possibly come up with"... BECAUSE YOU CAN'T HURT KADEN LIKE THAT. NOPE. NEVER. So... Good thing it didn't happen! Very good thing. Phew. :)

message 258: by Kendra (new)

Kendra Ardnek | 541 comments I remembered the finger and not the eye. Mostly because my heart was in my throat during the finger scene because the KNIFE WAS LITERALLY CUTTING THROUGH THE FINGER AND HAD KYRIN COME ANY LATER IT WOULD HAVE BEEN GONE!!!!!!! The eye? I'm not exactly sure when that happened, too much must have been going on at the moment for it to stick in my poor brain.

And, for the record, I took the quiz ... and then my internet decided to get persnickety and didn't let it validate my score and now I need to take it a second time to see how I did ... and my brain hates taking quizzes twice. (But at least I know I would have gotten one question right...)

H.M.R. (mybookcaseandi) | 381 comments I hope I can figure it out it's pretty confusing for me, I think I'm technology challenged;)

well I went to a fabric store with my sister yesterday and got knit fabric for a dress, and leather for a jerkin my sister is going to make me and so I have been daydreaming about it all day;) and reading a beautiful book called Trust (by Jaye\Molly BTW)

message 268: by Stargazer (new)

Stargazer R. L. | 576 comments Wow, sounds like a good day!

While we're talking about things we did yesterday... I made bread and watched part of Star Wars 2. :P

;-D Yeah, maybe so. It was fabulous!
@Stargazer
Fresh homemade bread?! Bread and butter is like dessert for me. Almost dessert, anyways.

Oh and I have made these homemade pretzel roll. It's making my mouth water. Here's the recipe I use: http://www.cookingclassy.com/2012/08/... Yum! Maybe we need a food discussion tab.....

message 273: by H.M.R. (new)

H.M.R. (mybookcaseandi) | 381 comments oh my word they look delicious! I wonder if I could alter the recipe, I have PKU and can't have certain foods (such as dairy products, wheat, flour etc.) they look really good!

message 274: by gabi (new)

gabi | 358 comments What does PKU stand for??? I get eczema (it is like a rash) when I have dairy. So I try not to have it a lot. ;-) My family uses almond milk and Earth Balance butter instead of dairy. I'll have to try switching stuff out on that pretzel recipe. Haven't done that yet.

message 275: by H.M.R. (new)

H.M.R. (mybookcaseandi) | 381 comments it stands for phenyketonuria I don't think I've ever heard of uh( I can't remember how its spelled) that so like can you have Starbucks? I would be devastated if I couldn't ( yes it does have milk in it but I can have a certain amount of phenylalanine a day, 350 to be exact and I have a special formula I have to drink everyday to :P its fun to trick my friends into trying some *chuckles* they hate it:)

message 276: by gabi (new)

gabi | 358 comments I can have Starbucks. I can have milk, but it just gives me a rash. It helps if I take probiotics when I have milk to not get the rash.

message 281: by gabi (new)

message 282: by H.M.R. (new)

H.M.R. (mybookcaseandi) | 381 comments haha you could just throw some through the screen ;) I shouldn't eat this smore either but it's to good;) if I wait my sisters will eat all the chocolate ;)

message 283: by Stargazer (new)

Stargazer R. L. | 576 comments Oh I feel so bad for y'all! D: I don't have any food problems like that. No dairy? AAAGH. I would die.

@Gabs: Have you tried all natural raw-milk?

Coffee-cake and s'mores? :O You guys have all the yummy stuff! XD

message 284: by gabi (new)

gabi | 358 comments @Stargazer
I don't think I've tried raw-milk. Hmmm... I'll have to try it and see how my body reacts to it.

message 285: by Stargazer (last edited Jun 23, 2015 03:54PM) (new)

Stargazer R. L. | 576 comments You totally should! I bet you'd be fine. (Though, I don't know where you live, but it's possible it's illegal to buy it... There's a few states like that... Because some people don't want us to be healthy so they make the best stuff illegal.)

message 286: by gabi (new)

gabi | 358 comments That is crazy!!!!! You know some countries ban certain books too?! Mein Kampf by Adolf Hitler is banned in some places and only one company is allowed to publish it at one time. It is published by a different company every 4 years. I learned this in school.

message 287: by Stargazer (new)

Stargazer R. L. | 576 comments I know!! Craziness! Wow, I didn't know that about the book thing.

message 288: by Morgan (new)

Morgan | 342 comments You can only buy raw milk in GA if it's labelled "pet milk." We did it for awhile. We stopped after my sister got campalobactor (I don't think I spelled that right) though we think it was from pool water not the milk since she was the only one to get sick and she was so young she still swallowed pool water. Raw milk tastes a lot better than store milk. One of my sisters won't even drink milk anymore now that we but store milk. And I've heard that lactose intolerant people can drink raw milk. But aside from being illegal in some states, it's also a LOT more expensive, which is another reason we stopped buying it.

message 289: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Beguerie (amandabeguerie) | 467 comments My family usually buys almond milk because my brother, my mom, and I are all lactose intolerant. And I like it better than regular milk. But my brother can't have processed food so I make almond milk from scratch. (I feel like such a hippie!)

message 290: by Kendra (new)

Kendra Ardnek | 541 comments Okay, it is scary how many of us are allergic to milk in some form or fashion!

I, too, must watch my milk intake. I'm not as bad now as I was when I was younger, and it's never been officially diagnosed to say what triggers it and why, but I get hyperactive and moody when I've had too much milk, as well as getting nasty canker sores and a few other things. We think it's milk protein that I can't digest properly, but when I was younger I would avoid all dairy products in any form or fashion.

Lately however, I've found that if I get some keifer ever so often (which is a fermented milk), and use lemongrass oil (which aids in the digestion of milk, and is also a focusing oil), I can tolerate it more, so I mostly avoid cheese and straight milk anymore. Still, it's frustrating.

We have a dairy that sells raw milk in our general area, so we get a jug every month or so. I don't like the taste, so I don't really drink it, either.

message 291: by Morgan (new)

Morgan | 342 comments Thankfully, I don't have a problem with dairy. I tried going dairy free last year to help with headaches, but the only thing that changed was that I was grumpy because I missed my milk and cheese. Seriously, I get really grumpy if I can't have milk in the morning.

We (well, my mom and I) went gluten free after that. I started feeling a lot better. Lately, we decided that we think it's not so much the gluten itself as it is the processed stuff. We stopped eating a lot of processed food when we stopped eating gluten. I tried homemade bread with flour we ground ourselves the other day and was fine, but last night I had some macaroni and cheese at a barbecue and my stomach felt weird and my head got all full of pressure. I've felt weird after eating jarred spaghetti sauce but not homemade too. I guess they put a lot of chemicals in a lot of storebought food. :P And we're doing vitamin supplements too. That's probably a help.

message 292: by Raechel (new)

Raechel Lenore (vikinglady10) | 22 comments I'm kinda just jumping in - found this topic interesting! We get raw-milk from a farmer near by and love it. We don't have any allergies to milk/dairy, thankfully. But yes, I agree that the taste is so much better than store bought. I loooove fresh, whole-milk. :)

And Morgan: I know what you mean - we try to eat healthy, organic home-made stuff, and when we eat something storebought/processed we definitely feel the difference. Mum has bread-starter that she makes bread from, and grinds the flour too - we were grinding it by hand in a hand-grinder, but that is exhausting work. ^.^

Basically, it seems all food you don't grow or make yourself is designed to kill you. :P That's what it feels like anyway. Many of you probably know, but I have Celiac Disease AND am allergic to wheat. So I can't have any whatsoever or my throat swells up (scary) and it makes me terribly nauseated.

On the bright side, I'm totally fine with dairy. :)

message 294: by Kendra (new)

Kendra Ardnek | 541 comments I recently learned that Celiac Disease runs in my family. I don't seem to have it, thankfully, but we suspect my sister does. It's nasty, I agree.

Yeah, eating is interesting in my household, especially since our yard is perfect for growing weeds and not much else. (We live on a former cotton plantation, and the soil still hasn't recovered completely.)

message 295: by Shantelle (new)

Shantelle | 62 comments Popping into the conversation here... Wow, it does seem like a lot of people have food allergies! I myself have an intolerance to wheat and peanuts. And my doctor wants me to go off basically everything except for meat and vegetables...... O_O Because I just have a lot of unexplained health issues, and they think its certain foods.

So cool to hear about all the healthy stories! :) I usually feel like everyone thinks I'm weird when I talk about natural, and going off sugar, and how homemade is usually better than store-bought.

message 296: by Raechel (new)

Raechel Lenore (vikinglady10) | 22 comments Wow, scary, Jaye! I'm sorry. =( That would be really, really hard. Wheat is in a lot. Like bread. And bread is good. =(

But good to look on the bright side!

message 297: by Merenwen (new)

Merenwen Inglorion | 106 comments This is such a neat conversation. *jumps in* ^.^

@Jaye: Ouchouchouch. >.< That must stink, to say the least...

I love bread, cheese, pasta, milk (have had mostly storebought, and a little bit of goat's milk at one point, never raw (but I want to try)), cookies, ice cream, etc. So I need wheat and dairy, or I'm not happy. ;P
Thankfully, the only consumption-able I'm allergic to so far is penicillin. :)

I would LOVE to get off of store-bought (it's almost the only thing we eat), but we do NOT have time to grow our own garden or anything like that. :(
Just enough time to grow a teensy box of stuff for our guinea pigs...

We did have some friends a long time ago that did most of their food themselves. They owned some bees, a cow, a goat, some chickens, ground their own wheat, and all that goodness. Food as simple as PB&J was filling. After having only one or two (versus three or five)! :D
They had to get rid of their cow, though, when a neighbor said something to the state about them drinking raw milk. The state freaked out, needless to say. :P

[Random question out of curiosity, please ignore if it makes anyone uncomfortable or runs too far off track, even for this thread: how many of you with food allergies got vaccinated at a young age (like a few months to a few years)?
Like I said, I'm just curious. Feel free to ignore. :)]

message 298: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Beguerie (amandabeguerie) | 467 comments @Shantelle:
Sounds like my brother's diet. He is on the GAPS diet, and can't have: any kind of grain, any kind of dairy, soy, any kind of sugar (except for raw honey) and any kind of processed meat. It's insane. But he is doing really well on it.

@Merenwen:
I was vaccinated until 6mos old, when my parents decided it was better for us not to do that any more for health reasons. And I'm lactose intolerant, though I'm in love with cheese and ice cream and coffee and cream and all that. So I deal with the stomachaches. :P
Interestingly enough, my brother has special needs (a form of autism, specifically) and my parents never vaccinated him. And he's a billion times better off function-wise than other autistic kids his age. He's on a crazy diet, eating mostly meat, veggies, and nuts, which helps, whether he's actually allergic to those off-limit foods or not.

(We seriously need to start a health topic...just saying.)

message 299: by gabi (new)

gabi | 358 comments To all those people who can't have wheat, dairy, etc. Try this banana bread recipe: http://curiouscitizen.com/post/643809... It is quite delicious!!! Note: instead of adding oats on top like it says, I added powered sugar or cinnamon sugar.

message 300: by Shantelle (new)

Shantelle | 62 comments @Merenwen, I can't remember if I was vaccinated as a baby. I think my older brother was; but I don't know if any of the rest of us kids got them. I know I got the tetanus shot a few times when I was younger. But my mom does a lot of researching and is very into natural, so we didn't do any other shots.

I know one of my friends can't even get tetanus shots, because I guess they cause her to have severe, severe migraine headaches!! O_O
