Animal Farm
question
Was anyone else completely scarred by this book?

I had literal nightmares of pigs walking on two legs wearing human clothes killing horses.

It didn't scare me but it was mildly disturbing, seeing how easily it was to manipulate all of them, and how in fact our sociaty is easily manipulated by television and media
I read this book as an adult, and it seriously made me interested in politics, and now it is one of my favourite books!
When the pigs first walk... I can still remember how chilling it was. I had to re-read it several times.
Didn't scare me at all. It gives me a confirmation about the dark side of human's nature. Along with Pink Floyd's music record "Animals" is a magical combination that explains most of our stupidity as a specie. I believe this book is the most extraordinary allegory of al time
it scarred me but in a positive way, if that makes sense. i was disturbed reading it, seeing how easily corrupt the pigs became and how easily everyone else suffered because of it, but im glad it showed it. it completely shaped the way i not only look at history but also political issues now. it definitely stuck with me.
No, it didn't scare me at all. I really like the idea that animals adapt human behavior. Was totally fun to read this book.
I remember reading this book at school and loving it, however, I was so young that I didn't really understand what Orwell was trying to say and my best friend and I took the book at face value, even sobbing when some of the animals died. This book is what made me want to become a vegetarian! I would love to read it again as an adult and see how I feel about it now.
The story really shows you a fugitive outlook of how power influences the minds of masses, but still - that vivid metaphore caught your attention!
It scarred me emotionally. I remember reading the chapter where the horse is killed. it didn't register that the meat the pigs were eating was actually the horse that they had killed. I know I was confused what happened to the horse, but it didn't click that he had been killed until my high school teacher brought it up.
George Orwell was in the zone with this one. I read this book in 8th grade for literature class and I had no idea of how deep it was. I re-read this book as an adult and I saw it through very different lenses. It makes me wonder what was the purpose of giving this book to children. Animal farm is the definition of timeless and limitless. While Animal Farm is an allegory to the Russia Revolution and was released in 1945, Even today, 78 years later, I can see themes in animal farm playing out in my country of Jamaica.
Not in the sense of walking/talking animals. It was eye opening though and I did like how animals were figuratively used to represent authority gone wrong. Which, is going on. and that is what is terrifying.
i think it was amazing the hole book was amazing but scary.......
imagine a little pig drawing a widmill design on the floor, i found it cute
I was increasingly horrified at how dark the story got. Having started as a simple farm story with talking animals, I didn't expect anything of what I had read. It definitely made a strong impression on my 15 year old self. Nevertheless, I loved it and its one of my favorite books of all time.
Nope. However, this might because I'd already read both Watership Down and The Rats of NIMH.
For some reason, I was extremely disturbed by the idea of the pigs eventually beginning to walk on two legs (and wearing clothes, but specifically the two legs part). Don't know why, but for some reason that has always stuck with me, and I will never forget how creeped out I was when I read that part.
Some have commented that the animals very clearly ate horse after Boxer(?) dies...I'm not sure if that registered with me at the time. Went over my head.

Orwell is just a little too good at playing off all of our fears, I think!
I read this book when I was about 13? Let me tell you, I had nightmares for a solid year after.. definitely was too young then. In hindsight (i am 23 now) this is an amazing and I also think important book. But not intended for every age group lol
it scares you because it's something that actually happened, i love his books cause he knew that the human nature will never change, humans are, unfortunately, always looking for power, and when they have it, they want more, this book was made to spread awarness about it, just like 1984, it was made to tell people not to make the same mistakes, but here we are. so yes it was meant to scare you, he did his job
An ironic fear considering the real monster wasn't the animals at all, but the death drive that dwells within even the usurper. The real horror is the unavoidable consequence of even our best intentions. The pattern is cyclical, archetypal, unavoidable and that, in my opinion is what should give you nightmares.
personally i really liked the book and how realistic it was it was also very well written , i read it for school and it was actually the first book i really enjoyed from the school.
I wouldn't say this one scarred me, though I do see how it might. 1984 on the other hand....
No lord of the flies was particularly disturbing to me when we had to do it for literature class in high school.
It was interesting nonetheless but it didn't completely scar me. It made me go research more things deeper about the Russian revolution and god it was fun

When I was 14 I read this book and my small mind was dreadful by the end of this book, the pigs laugh and open ending
Good Read...Using Animals to describe the cycle of Revolution to Socialism to Communism...Or if you like Youthful Idealism to Materialism to Totalitarianism...
I were shook, i realized that we have been living under the manipulation of those "pigs" for centuries and this generation no longer has choice but to obey to and even worship the authority.
Very clever how George Orwell based Animal farm on real life events. It was based of the idea of Stalin and Lenin in communist Russia. Made me real sad but I wasn’t scared.
noup, most of the time was fun. In the ends its get really weird, but just weird, not scarrie
first coming across this at school as a play on the corruption of power, reading again the only thing I fear is how easy it is for history to repeat.
I was shocked to see the difference between truth and entire truth while reading the book. It gives a clear vision about the fact that even sometimes what you see with your own eyes can betray you because you don't know what the entire story is. Though we see such things in Movies and Web-Series all the time and this book is spotlighting the idea of not taking any action, which can wield a negative result, without knowing what the entire truth is. Overall it taught me not to be overly trusting. The book though was not at all scary!
I think it scared me in the sense that, whilst reading it made me so frustrated and angry for the characters sake who were under the power of the pigs and so easily manipulated simply because of a good argument, and where it makes it scary is that if you reflect on it, it's very apparent in the real world, which of course, it's a comment on real life events, but I obviously never lived through the communist regime, but it's still pretty relevant in todays politics. Idk if that makes sense, im not super adept at getting my thoughts out in a coherent block of text :')
History of the Russian Revolution, by Leon Trotsky, is the next book to read for those who have not already read it. In which case, you would then you go from an allegorical look to as close to the actual thing as you dare. Of course, Animal farm is a bit shorter.
It should be a real eye opener for people who are otherwise naive to how easily people are manipulated by people in power. It's a book that should only have a positive effect on people.
it was when I was forced to read this in school but now that I am an adult and I read this book again I understood that the human race is like those animals
Finally, someone else who was scared! I mean, I wouldn't say I was scarred, but the ending was incredibly jarring, once the pigs actually started becoming monsters and even (view spoiler) I was horrified. But it was also so FRUSTRATING because the animals are so dumb about what's happening.
What a book! When my father made me read this as a rebellious fourteen year old, I just knew it would suck. Once I started I really couldn’t put it down. Now many decades later George O looks like a prophet. I just wish my old man and I could talk books and I could thank him for making me read this one. Still can’t get through Billy Budd though
It didn't scar me, in fact, it's one of my favourite books to exist. Probably because I drilled it into my brain for school, but still, the ending was so bloody good
