This thread is to discuss A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin, the first book of the A Song of Ice and Fire series.


Pages: 835 pages


Length: 2 Months (August and September)


Participants: Alyana, Dominique, Allie, Kristen, Frezita, Lorraine, Karolina.


Everyone reads at their own pace during a Buddy Read. Because participants can be at different parts of the book at different times, it is extremely important to mark spoilers so that the book is not ruined for someone who is not as far along as others!!!

Mark spoilers by placing {spoiler} before the text and {/spoiler} after the text but use the < and > instead of the { and }.

I happen to be reading this book at the moment (about 40% through) so will be keeping an eye out on everyone’s thoughts here!

It's going to be my 2nd time. Might try to see if this time I can find the audio. Never saw the tv show but loved the book but didn't go further than the first one.

Hi Everyone...I have read this book a couple times through but haven't progressed past this book :) I am interested to see what everyone thinks! :)

Hello! Fantasy isn't my to-go genre but saw this challenge and decided to give this book a try. I watched the first season of GoT years ago and didn't like it so let's hope the book will turn out to be more enjoyable.

Did George finish the books? It's a shame the TV series ended so poorly, the last season was terrible. I loved the TV show. Heard nothing but positive things about this book!

I wasn't a fan of the show until the last season was about to premiere, my husband loves it so much so I told myself why not give it a chance and I ended up liking it.

I think there are two more books that are currently in the works by the author. I want to try the book because I'm sure I am going to learn more that I did not see in the show.

I'm about to finish the Harry Potter series so I need a new series to start. Been wanting to read Game of Thrones for a while now.

Is it to late to join? I read the first book a long time ago ( need a refresher on it). I need to finish this series.

I started listening to the audio and don't relly like so switching to physical.

I started reading the book. I love it even though it is my third time. I have to admit I am a fan. For the books and the tv show. Not sure I loved the ending but I am still wondering if it could have been different. Looking forward reading your thoughts.

Hello guys! I've just come across this thread about a week ago, only then realising that I have bought GOT only the day before at the charity shop I work at! This will be my first time reading it... Need quite a bit of motivation for big books like this! Lol x

I'm about 25% of the book. I'm doing with the audio. I told myself that I am taking a break with team challenges reading a big book lol.

I am not seeing much of a difference with the book and the tv show so far. Who are your most fave and hated characters?

I have read some articles that the show's creators promised a new and better ending. What do you think about that?

"When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die"...I just finished the book and still think this is a great story... I love that this book is a not a cloak-and-dagger story (even though it is filled with knights) but more a Middle Age story that the author does not "romanticize or glorify".

Having read all the books and seen the tv show, it is difficult to answer that question honestly, especially when you know what happened to all of them. But I do like Tyrion,. I find that he is not a "black and white" character...
As for the character I hate, I would say that Joffrey is the winner...for now :-)

I do like Tyrion too. I really hate Joffrey and also Sansa. I think she is selfish, just thinking about her own sake and I'm not sure if she's really in love with Joffrey or because he is the only way for her to become queen.

Haven’t commented because I don’t have really anything to say….

Although I am liking it. I thought it would be a bit denser but I’m finding it very readable.

I’m around the 400 page mark, maybe a little before. The boyfriend has joined in so we literally have to read it together which means I can’t read ahead. Otherwise I think I would have plowed through it.
