📚 Task 12.- Read a book with a drawn cover

The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna
📅Date Completed: 01/10/2023 💭✨Rating: 5 💖
📝Review ✍🏽A real feel good, heart warming novel about witches, their magic and relationships. It was truly enchanting and I loved the magic and the witchy routines and spells. It's set in Britain and I loved the narration. The romance is not the main part here, but there is one and it is slow burn and grumpy/sunshine one.

Review: Though the ex was a major jerk. I’m so glad Max brought out the best in Sara. So much fun and sweaty moments between the two. I wasn’t sure how these two would end up since the ex was for sure trying to put himself in the middle of them but wow Sara opened her eyes and saw the real jerk and what she was really missing in her life. Another favorite 😍

Review:
I am conflicted about this book because I went into this thinking this would be a great fall read/dark academia. Which, it is….but it also seems rushed. Effy, the main character is the only female in the architect college because as a woman she is unable to be in the literature college even though she is more than qualified. She is a relatable character, struggling with mental health having to take sleeping pills at night and pink pills during the day to keep a variety of "visions" away. She falls deep into her favorite author's stories and worlds as a method of escapism. There are some very adult elements in this book that many women can related to. "I was a woman when it was convenient to blame me, and a girl when they wanted to use me."

She ends up winning a contest to redesign the home of her favorite author, but when she gets to the location the home is in complete disrepair, literally falling into the sea, and hiding more secrets than the family is leading on. The mystery and the plot were a bit predictable and the world-building could have been much bigger.

I think at just under 400 pages, the author's writing is beautiful but it almost distracts from the story because it is so "flowery" at times. I would say the best part of the book is the description of this old decrepit house, it was similar to Mexican Gothic to me.

The last few weeks are different and need a bit more urgency if we want to finish first.

WAIT WAIT...I have two weeks to read each theme call?! I thought it was just that first week that we got two weeks to read the book...Sooo ...a new theme is called every Friday...we have to select a book before that next Friday, but could still in theory be reading the previous week's book? Essentially we can be overlapping with 1-2 books, and 1-2 theme calls at the same time (up until the later weeks). Yes?

Yes, as long as you select a book within the week the task was called you can complete it by the following week.
But the last 3 weeks we need more speed in order to try to finish first, so I would say shorter books to be finished asap on those last weeks.

Review:
Adorable. I really enjoyed this quick, cute read. I fell in love with the two MC's right away and I loved that it was a clean romance, refreshing to find at times. If you want a good, steamy romance, this isn't the right book for you. There's very, very little in this book but it still was worth the time (for romance genre). Even if you love steamy romance and look for that, you still might love how whimsical it is and how Michael Blumley, Duke of Loriton, and Elizabeth “Bitsy” Dockering meet in the most unusual and funny way.

Review - I was a little hesitant reading this book, I don't normally want to read cartoon cover books but I had a hard time finding green and brown, so I gave it a shot and ended up LOVING it. I loved the issue in the storyline, somewhat abuse/controlling ex, the hero quarterback.. Loved it. It's also football season (my fav) and this book fit that perfectly.

Forever Right Now A Single Dad Romance by Emma Scott
Book: Forever Right Now: A Single Dad Romance by Emma Scott
Read: 10/10/23
Rating: 5 emotional stars!

Review:
I just loved this sweet book about a single (unexpectedly) dad and his relationship with his child. Sawyer Hass is an up and coming lawyer who still has his bar exam to take. When he meets Darlene Montgomery, he can't really afford the distraction...that being said, we all know how that goes. lol Darlene is a recovering addict and is trying to clean up her life by finding work, attending NA meetings, and more. So both she and Sawyer have a lot going on in their personal lives.

I love that the author writes a slow burn romance and we get to take the time to know both characters pretty well. While Sawyer tends to his daughter and his studies to become a lawyer, Darlene is tending to her journey of becoming clean and sober. But attraction and those feels are strong.

Plus, this author and the MC's gave me so many feels. I ran the gamut of emotions and, yes, I even cried.
