Genevieve Lacaze (geniecoach) | 2 comments Hello everyone, my name is Genevieve and I'm new to the Goodreads forums. Reading through this post in the last hour has given me already a lot of courage. My first self-help/career/business book was launched about 4 months ago now. It's called Passion Pays Passion Pays: How to Make a Living from your Passions... and Change the World Too and here's the website with the the trailer: Passion Pays book
It is challenging but fun to promote it and like everyone the challenge is also in creating time to actually process some good work too!
In terms of this wonderful community, what would be your advice/tips to make good relationships here? Thank you all.

Just be yourself Genevieve, it seems you are already following your dream so I wish you the very best of everything! I would buy your book but I'm at the other end of life; writing is my retirement. I sure have a lot of life experience to draw from though.

Thank you very much Alan. :)
"I'm sure there are many people in your close circle who are unhappy at work or feel stuck in their career; they would thank you for offering them my book. :-P The only way you could genuinely recommend it though is if you've read it ;)" the author replies shamelessly.

Thank you for your encouraging words Alan.
I forgot to say that my godmother, my sister and I love a good thriller a la Mary Higgins Clark. Heartwarming or animal stories also do well with godmother. I love witty authors.
So, I'll be checking out these genres and authors on here!
All the best everybody!

Is anyone here on the road to self publishing? Any represented by publishing houses?

message 309: by Florence (new)

Florence Witkop | 79 comments I've self-pubbed 4 ebooks so far and am finishing a fifth. It would definitely be easier to go through a publisher because of their name recognition even though you still must do your own marketing. But I'm not quite ready yet to submit to a publisher. I'll still try a few more tricks before doing that.

message 312: by Jerry (new)

Jerry Ward (jerry6030) | 10 comments Hi, Florence. The book is The Evolution of Wealth

The Evolution of Wealth by Jerry D. Ward .

It fits under history or economics or governance (although I don't think that genre is represented in Goodreads).

Would appreciate your suggestion.

message 313: by Florence (new)

Florence Witkop | 79 comments I'm putting your book on by TBR list. I'm fascinated by economics, especially macro-economics. It sounds like it might fit in a political genre. Are those genres on Goodreads? I've never checked but there should be political genres here!

Michael Parker (michaelparker) | 99 comments I have just persuaded my publisher to reduce the price of my book, THE BOY FROM BERLIN. This is the only title of mine on Amazon to which I do not have the rights. The price is $4,99 (£3.30). It has been released as a paperback in America by Harlequin Books, so I have great hopes for it. The link is http://www.amazon.com/dp/B009R6A26U/?tag

Short blurb: Secrets lurk around every corner as Gus Mason strides towards the Presidency of the United States of America. And from the Nazi death-camps to the steps of the White House, Gunter Haman and Jacob Demski, heir to the Jewish mafia empire, unravel a mystery that threatens the very fabric of the American way of life. However, as Lieutenant Amos, a Newark Police Officer, investigates the supposed suicide of a local senator, his investigations lead him deep into the corrupt world that inhabits the underbelly of American politics and closer to the truth.

Rosemary (mamieauthor) | 4 comments I have been a member for a while but I have been inactive while completing a book that took me sixteen years to finally complete due to memory recall and bitterness that kept me from writing anything worth reading until now. I have connected to many great people both readers and authors and so appreciate the support here. It feels much like what a family is suppose to be.
I have not that I can remember introduced myself but have questions and need help. My name is Rosemary "Mamie" Adkins and I have just completed my second non fiction book, Reflections of Mamie-A Story of Survival. I do not want to break any rules so please forgive me if I am-please share with me where if I am illegal here, where to post this information. My book launches this Friday in a Facebook event with 10 other authors and that link is: https://www.facebook.com/events/45761... I live in Washington State with my husband of almost 25 years and we have a wonderful daughter living in Colorado. The following is a brief synopsis of my book written for me. PLEASE forgive me if I am not where I should be.

Reflections of Mamie-A Story of Survival  is a sad and joyous personal account of growing up under the worst kind of adversity.  It is a story of survival during times of extreme suffering and deprivation that will leave you feeling Mamie’s anguish.

A must read for  anyone with a difficult childhood or anyone wanting to understand the cycles of abuse!
...S. Allan Kane, MD

The story begins in the early 1950's suburbs of Houston, Texas.  Mamie is a  young child of four who was unwanted, afraid, abused and with nowhere to turn, learned that she had to stand alone.  Her only friends were her older brother, an abused child himself, and her nanny, who begged their mother to stop beating them.  The father, though he loved his children, remained passive to the end.  A victim himself, the only protection he offered was a warning to stay out of their mother's reach.

This story shares Mamie's heroic battle to keep her dreams alive and hold on to her spirit. How she finds her way out of fifty-four years of abuse is yours to discover in her fascinating memoirs.
Thank you for any advice and guidance. I have posted the launch event the only other place I was told about but will try one more time to be sure I did it correctly. Thank you for your patience.

Gail (gailgaymermartin) | 4 comments Gail Gaymer Martin writing romance and romantic suspense. I'm enjoying a new experience of self-publishing my out of print novels so they have life again. After 52 published novels, I now have two novels as eBooks on Amazon, B & N and other ebook sellers. True Riches is set on romantic Mackinac Island and To Keep Me Warm is the last book in the anthology of four siblings sepearted as children now finding each other as adults. The story revolves around the hero, his young son with a disability and a young woman who doesn't need the hero. Or does she? My next is one of my favorites and my 2nd published novel -- out soon as an eBook -- Dreaming of Castles. I can't wait to show you the cover. Thank you readers for your love of story.

Hi.
I know what you mean about there being a lot of readers out there. Between May and April I got 944 downloads of my ebooks and I was so pleased with that. I got 4 really mean reviews on my ebooks from all of those downloads.
I can truly say that people enjoy reading. Usually my main royalties come from United Kingdom. I'm in the united states. I keep thinking that my writing must be very nice, because they enjoy it.
I'm very grateful when people read my books. When I went to the library I always chose any book that was there just for the fun of reading. I noticed that in some of the other forums people were constantly fighting with each other about what art looked nice on their cover or about how many authors needed to go.
I was always thinking that when I got into self publishing it was, because I wanted to share my work with the world. I wanted people to read my stories. Maybe they would be inspired about what I had to say.
When I dug really deep into the forums I was getting bashed from left to right. I was thinking this is so silly since I'm still an author and still getting royalties from my readers.
It's such a great opportunity to share stories. It doesn't matter how they are written. This is the reason why I became a self published author. I can write anything that I want. I also notice something else.
I kept seeing those people telling others to write stories that people want to read. When I began to write I decided to write stories that I thought of. Some of the stories are about my life in general. My accomplishments and my success.
I have never thought of ever putting another writer's work down. I think everyone deserves a chance to share their work with the world. I always say this. Great success to everyone that wants to share stories with the world.
At first I was stuck with emotion over some of the reviews on my ebooks, but then I thought people can say anything they want, but that won't stop others from reading. People love reading. I can see this very clearly now. I'm so happy to be an author/photographer. I hope all of you are happy too.

message 326: by Gail (new)

Gail (gailgaymermartin) | 4 comments HI Norma - I agree with you about the idea of rival authors. There is no such thing. Each novelist has fans. I have numerous authors I love and read them when I have time and not on a book deadline myself. I mentioned a while ago that I have just started self-pubbing some of my older published novels that were written long ago and are no longer avilable. But I have 52 novels published in book form.

Some people a re critical because many new authors have no idea that writing is not something we can just do, but it's something we must learn. I continue to hone the craft of writing wanting to be better and better with each book. It's a skill, a talent and a continual growth. Authors and readers who understand will criticize those authors who have no concept of good writing. I admit I'm very critical. I wish I weren't but I know what is good and what isn't. If you are skilled at baking a cake or making pies and someone gives you a piece of pie with cardboard tasting pie dough and runny filling, you'd know it wasn't a good pie. Even if you want to like it, you just can't. That it with novelist that have the desire but have never worked at craft.

But despite that, unknowing readers will purchase their books, but they may never by another or they may give another try. When the author disappoints them, there are too many good books out there so they'll stop buying their books.

And even if you are a skilled novelist with talent and nohow, an author will always be criticized by some readers. It's just part of life, don't you think?
We novelists must have thick skins and smile despite the criticism. My books sell in the 100,000s and I get letters and emails. Most are wonderful. Some make me cry they are so touching, but an occasional one plows into me for saying something they disagree with. Or finds a typo or a grammar error and they send me a list of things they consider wrong. I laugh at this because not only do I read the book numerous times before it goes to my agent and editors, but the publishing house does line edits, copy edits, send them back to me each time for my opinions and finally I get the galley, my last chance to make changes. I still find errors that have crept in. . .so I know some reader somewhere will probably spot another one. : D We can't make everyone happy.

The best things we can do is study writing, work at it, read books on writing, go to confernces and workshops, hook up with critiques groups and more. If anyone out there is looking for some tips, my Writing Fiction blog at www.gailgaymermartin.com is loaded with all kinds of information that I teach all over the U.S. and it's all free. I love helping writers learn the craft. Wishing you well and lots more books that sell.

Gail

Now for what I find very important in writing - EDITING! Almost all new authors miss the editing step as they rush through the process or don't realize the importance of editing. I have to admit, I was so excited about the publishing process that I often wanted to rush through it as well. However, I later realized the importance of editing and I took my time on it. If you don't publish a book properly, people won't read it, and therefore, there is no point in publishing it at all. DO IT RIGHT :)

I'm looking for the more thoughtful type of member who'd be willing to read and review my book which takes a seriously-humorous look at the French and English through the eyes of a split-identity 'Frenglishman'. Apparently, some previous reviewers have found it difficult to get through - even pretentious. So I must warn you that it doesn't transport you into a rural French idyll but is firmly rooted in the reality of France today.
