Took me six to write mine (part-time). LOTS of rewriting (I would never show anyone a first draft; it's all just to establish the main plot line. Otherwise, stilted dialog and not much depth). So I assume that the six are not part of a series? Or are they?

No, although for the two books that I'm writing is a sequel. When I write the six books(chapters), later in time I would go back and add more details (if another detail pops in my head). Sometimes if I'm at the computer, the ideas just come and I keep writing.

That's quite a talent, keeping all those plot lines separate in your head. I get obsessive over one story at a time. Some might say it characterizes the differences between men and women. Might be something to it.

Good luck with the writing. There are groups where you can find volunteers who will critique your stories as they develop. Don't know if you're comfortable with this, but if you are, it is a good way to start building an audience as well as getting valuable feedback. Each group may have a section where this is done (not sure about this one). Might take some hunting.

Yes thank you. I found a website called wattpad.com and that's where people write their books, and stories. So I'm trying to write one there also, and let others read my books.

Therese Vannier (theresevannier) | 34 comments Bula! I'm new to Goodreads both as a reader and as an author of The Long Way The Long Way. I tend to read mostly non-fiction but my writing partner and I write mostly sci-fi/fantasy. I just finished reading Jared Diamond's latest novel (The World Until Yesterday). Fascinating.

My novel (The Long Way) is an historical fantasy and takes the reader on an adventure from the Opium Wars of China to California's gold rush. I look forward to meeting other readers and authors. Here's a comment from a recent review:

"A fine historical fantasy tale featuring a memorable, tenacious protagonist.” -Kirkus Reviews

Holy moly! I must have a powerful and engaging book.

Yes, my writing partner and I have worked (screenplays) together for several years. We met at the San Luis Obispo Telegram-Tribune and began to write together for fun. Writing with a partner is our preference and we've enjoyed success in the competition circuit. The Long Way is our first novel. Originally discussed as a screenplay, we decided to present the story as a book instead. I have a lifelong love affair with Asian cinema and silver screen cowboys (not necessarily in that order). Long story short, I wanted to write a wonton western…and we did! AND it's getting positive reviews. Many thanks for the thought provoking questions. Much happiness to you.

I was trying to phrase my info about Kirkus while tempering the post so not to cast doubt on your work. My intent was to inform Robert in #372 that a Kirkus Review is not always what it seems. When I clicked 'post' I expected I would ruffle some feathers. Not my intent. Good Luck with your work.

EDIT: Just a tag on to my post. Because I had been to Kirkus to obtain the link I posted, I'm getting ads on the pages I visit. One was to enter the Kirkus 'Indie Book Award'. First thing you have to do in the entry is to buy a review.

There's a warden patrolling around this lake when he hears gunshots. He goes to investigate and finds a guy hunting out of season from a decrepit duck blind. When he investigates further he finds the guy has a brace of loons he has shot.

The warden exclaims, "What are you doing. Loons are endangered. You can't take them anytime. I'm seizing them and writing you a summons to appear in court."

The hunter pleads he is just sustenance hunting to feed his family but the law is the law.

The warden writes the summons and heads back to his truck with the contraband. The hunter is packing up to leave and the warden asks him, "Say, out of curiosity, what does loon taste like?"

The hunter shrugs his shoulders and replies, "Kind of like a cross between golden eagle and condor."

J.T. Buckley (jtbuckley) | 159 comments Just another comment on Kirkus' "paid review service"

"Kirkus’ Indie program was started in 2005 when the editors wanted to expand their coverage to include the fastest growing segment in the book industry — self-publishing. To meet scale, selection and financing challenges, Kirkus created a review service for self-publishers called Kirkus Discoveries, now Kirkus Indie. Like the original bulletin published by Virginia Kirkus, Kirkus’ program for self-publishers was an innovation in the industry. Authors could finance the review themselves and guarantee selection for review, but the books would be held to the same high standard as books published by the major houses. The program gave self-publishers the chance to earn honest critical acclaim from one of the most prestigious brands in publishing."

Rosalind Minett | 22 comments Hi, I'm Rosalind. I have two blogs: a wacky one that is run by the characters from my collection of short stories (on Goodreads) Me-Time Tales: Tea breaks for mature women and curious men; and a serious writers' one that includes reviews of less usual books, articles, comment and writers' tips. I can only occasionally review so I pick something that isn't getting mileage elsewhere and that has appealed to me, e.g. recent translations of contemporary fiction. I am not interested in erotica, chicklit, horror, vampires, dystopia. When I like someone's work I am very supportive. See Ramadan Sky - review post and discussion post on my blog. http://characterfulwriter.wordpress.com

Danielle (danielleleneedavis) | 34 comments I'd like to join the self-promotion party. :-)

A little about my book, The Protector http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HY6FG0W

A social worker is found dead on the stairway inside the building where she works. A mouthful of Scrabble letters tells Detective Sydney Valentine that this is not a random killing. And it’s not.

Someone is killing people and leaving Scrabble letters stuffed in their mouths. A dead juvenile court judge, a single mother – the body count goes up. When Detective Valentine and her family become targets of the killer, the stakes go sky high. She must protect her family and catch the wacko committing these monstrous crimes before more people die. Or before she does.

Detective Sydney Valentine is a contemporary cop with an edge and an attitude. She’s tough and potty-mouthed, but has a soft spot for her family and animals. Sydney wants to see justice served—no matter what.

************

"Danielle Davis’s story of murder and intrigue moves at an engaging clip as Detective Sydney Valentine and her partner sort through lies and deception to track down a sadistic murderer. The attention to detail and accuracy in police procedure, the witty dialogue, and memorable characters make this a must-read.
--Former Police Chief Wesley Harris, consultant for writecrimeright.com"

Annette Drake (annettedrake) | 1 comments Hello. My debut novel, Celebration House, was published last summer. It's a paranormal romance and the beginning of a trilogy.

Here's more about my book:

Carrie Hansen spent her life caring for cardiac patients. Little did she know she would become a patient herself. After recovering from her own heart surgery, she realizes she has a special gift: the ability to see and talk with the dead.

Now, with her new heart failing, she leaves the bustle of Seattle behind and returns to Lexington, Missouri, the small town where she spent her childhood. Here, she sets out to restore an abandoned antebellum mansion and open it as a venue for celebrations.

Carrie’s work is cut out for her. The 150-year-old Greek revival house is in need of serious repair. Her sister, Melanie, tries to bully Carrie into returning to Seattle, predicting “her little project” is doomed to fail. Finally, Carrie’s health gives out on her, requiring emergency surgery.

But she will not give up. Carrie’s unique gift allows her to build relationships with the mansion’s original occupants, especially Maj. Tom Stewart, the handsome Civil War soldier who died a hundred years before Carrie was born. He encourages and comforts her, though not in the physical way they both desire.

Will Carrie finish restoring Celebration House or will it finish her? And how can she plan a future with a man who has only a past?

Thanks for reading.

message 389: by Len (new)

Len Robertson | 78 comments Believe it or not, I want other writers explore with stories The Unexpected Century (the 21st Century).
Some reasons why:

Discovery of Poly. Extremophiles (D. Radiodurans) that can survive in biofilm within ejects for millions and perhaps billions of years by John Anderson (1956).

Detection of 51 Pegasi b by Michele Mayor and Didier.Queloz on October 6, 1995

Proposal to detect other civilizations by the uncommon pollutants in their atmospheres made by Dr. Richard Carrigan (The Economist, April 17-21, 2010, pp. 89-90)

"The Church does not find discovery of other civilizations contrary to its dogma". Vatican Conference on Planets and Life Elsewhere in the Cosmos, November, 2011

The unofficial conclusion of the military and intelligence communities: "UfO's are real". Col. John B Alexander PhD "UFO'S: Myths, Conspiracies And Realities", January, 2012

"The likeliest single event to upset the world's economy over the next ten years is confirmation of a second Earth", World Economic Conference, Davos, Switzerland, February 5, 2013

By 2024 if not a lot sooner, we will learn that we are not alone. More than likely,we will learn that our neighbors can and do visit us. my personal favorite is Alpha Centauri with 3 stars, 3 life zones, and 3 flocks of planets.

The most important in at least the past 500 years is coming at us like a 50 mile long asteroid with our address on it, but where are our sci fi writers?
