When did you first read Harry Potter?

My parents weren't sure if it would be "appropriate" for me, so my mom started reading ahead of me by a little, figuring that she could figure something out if she found anything that was deemed inappropriate.
I went to the Deathly Hallows premiere in '07 when I was 10, and haven't attended a midnight premiere yet (usually the day after or sometime close) but I'm planning on attending the last one at midnight!

i was either 7 or 8, i don't remember. my mom read the first chapter of sorceror's stone to me and my brother before bed. i took the book to my room and read up to chapter 5. i've been hooked ever since.

See my mother believed it was "the devil's book" and wouldn't let me read it for a long time. Then one day when i was 15 (i'm 25 now) i was baby sitting these twins who was reading the second book as a bedtime story. Well needless to say after i put them to bed i went in search of the first book and ended up reading a quarter of it. I came home and point blank told my parents i was getting the series.
My father went out and rented the first movie and after seeing that they celebrated Christmas in it he gave me permission to read the whole series. I literally went out and got the first book the next day. Less than a week later a friend whose boyfriend was like my mother gave me the second one. Then i got the third one. I got finished the 3rd book a few days before the 4th came out on paperback. Got that one the first day it came out. The rest was history.
I'm sad to say thought that the only midnight release book party i got to go to was the one for book 7. Mainly because i was 21 and could drive after midnight. I ended up going to one at wallmart which was actually pretty cool. ^^ I still have my gryffindor and Ravenclaw bracelets from it.
So to answer questions:
1) 15.
2) I read part of the 2nd book first. Then some of the 1st. But i saw the first movie before i finished an entire book.
^^

:(
but i've heard from friends who've been to multiple that it was better because it was the last.

But one day I just randomly picked up the first book from the library and started reading.
I was hooked! I read the entire series in one day!
Best. Books. EVER!

I'm pretty sure it goes like this:
I always LOVED the HP1 and HP2 movies, and watched them a million times. My brother was constantly trying to convince me that the books were better than the movies, I, forgive me, thought that that was impossible.
But, finally, he convinced me, and about the age of 8 or 9 I started the first book... and loved it!... and the 2nd book, and the 3rd, until the family listened to HP 4 right before the HP4 movie came out.
After that, I refused to go any farther, because my brother had told me that Sirius dies in the 5th book, I was sooooooo mad and sad, that I vowed I would never listen to or read Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I actually went so far as to listen to HP6 with the family when it came out, before ever reading book 5. Well, after book 6, I was kinda confused on a few subjects (like who on earth is Tonks????) and I finally worked up the nerve to read the 5th book. and loved it! (well, except for the Sirius dying part, I hated that)
After that the family listened to HP7 when it came out.
I have since READ them all about 2 or 3 times (I know, not nearly enough). I have probably listened to them more than that, though, back before every teen had an ipod my brother would constantly be listening to one HP book or another, so I heard a lot of bits and pieces in between.
I read Quidditch thru the Ages and Fantastic Beasts and where to Find Them somewhere in between. I read The Tales of Beedle the Bard as soon after it came out as I could.
So, no I did not read them all in order.

1st grade! I read them all in order! And yes, I have reread some of them!

I began reading the series after the first movie came out. Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone truly captivated me and so it urged me to begin reading. I borrowed the second book from a close friend who was already into the books before the movies. It was back in 2001, when I was 11 or 12.
Harry Potter sparked my love for books and reading. After I finished the second, I borrowed the third. For my grade school graduation, I asked for my first ever Potter book: The Goblet of Fire. I was so crazy over it I actually could not sleep just thinking about owning it.
I only read Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone when my mother bought me copies of the first three books when she was in Singapore. (She said everything was cheaper there, not so sure though.) And she called me up asking what she should buy for me!
So then I was anticipating for The Order of the Phoenix, and then my mother (I love her so much!)tells me that she had it reserved for me at a local bookstore. And so came the sleepless nights again fantasizing about it.
Half-Blood Prince came out the time I was in High School, and I remember telling my friends to delay discussions (and spoilers) until after we've all read them. It was really fun because I found a lot of friends who are true Potterheads, even when I got to college. Deathly Hallows came out during my Sophomore year as an Architecture student.
I have reread them (in order, of course) just recently after my college graduation. Still gets me everytime. Long live Harry Potter, as it will forever be alive in my heart.

Then I kept on reading the books over and over, and still am until this very day, just because the last movie has come out and there are no more books... Hogwarts will still live on in my heart:)
PS this is the only website where I feel the need to brag about reading the HP series over 20 times each, except the last one... only 5 times, sorry guys but I have to brag here because I know all of you book lovers understand!

i was probably about 10 or 11 years old?

So no waiting, I could read them in order, and I had time to memorize dialogue before movies 6, 7, and 7 Part 2.
I was going in to 6th grade when I started them...

I was going up to see my Nana in Hampton, my friend Cat had loaned the first book to my Mom. I was in 7th grade and even though reading in the car makes me sick, I read it in the car.

i'm one of those people who doesn't like jumping on bandwagons, but i totally LOVED these books! in a sense i'm kinda glad i waited, so i didn't have to wait for each book and movie to come out. as i read each book, i waited to watch the corresponding movie. amazing how much parts the movies leave out from the books! i loved the HP7.2 though :)
I had just finished the 7th grade when my mom got me a pdf version of the Sorcerer's Stone. I "borrowed" her laptop to read them and read the first three that way. My mom wanted her computer back, so I begged my dad to take me to the library. I checked out the last four there, and I was soon thinking "That's it? The series is over?" I really liked it, but I hadn't seen the movies. I watched the first four....then the sixth in theaters....then the fifth....then the last two in theaters. And by the way, I really liked the way they did the 8th movie! Even if they did leave a few things out...

Sorcerer's Stone came out in the theaters that November and I went to the midnight release with my brother. I've been to the midnight premiere of all seven movies. This last release I took my daughter to her first midnight premiere. My theater was the second highest grossing theater for DH 7.2 in the USA. It was packed and very cool to see all the fans dress up. I liked the book releases better though. There's more anticipation when you don't know what's going to happen. I remember hurrying through a wedding reception when I was trying to read Half-Blood Prince and a party for Deathly Hallows so I could get back to the book. It's kind of sad there won't be any more releases.

Its amazing how young most people were when they first became interisted in Harry Potter. The youngest ages seem to go from 5 to 9. Im currently tring to get my 8yr old sister to read them with me and while she loves the movies and games she has so far refused to try reading the books.
The books totally jump started my education. Before I read Harry Potter, I read picture books, picture books, and more picture books. But then I noticed some "big books" on the top of our bookshelf that weren't all bound in leather like my dad's usual one-night reads. And I knew I'd heard of the name somewhere before. I just couldn't remember when. So I took up the book with the giant 1 on it and showed it to my parents. I asked them where they got the books, and they said they bought them because we loved the movie. They said it was my favorite movie-Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. At that moment, I knew I had to ditch the picture books and read Harry Potter. I loved the movie soooo much and I thought that the book would be just as good, possibly better. I finished the first book in about 3 weeks because I was so little. I got to the 4th book and left it at my grandmother's house halfway through it. My Nonni lives 100 miles away. I stopped reading then, until 4th grade when I reread the series. But that didn't mean that after I lost the book I didn't keep reading more amazing books 600 pages thick. I finished the last book on January 19, 2010. I started them in first grade, when I was 6 or 7. Never. Will. They. Be. Forgotten. Thanks Jo Rowling for being the biggest part of my life. I cannot thank you enough. Never give up writing. Thank you. For everything.

Don't push your sister too much. She'll probably come around. I started with my daughter in 2nd grade and it was a little bit much for her. By the end she wasn't crazy about them anymore, but now that a few years have passed she wants to start them again. I think she'll get more out of them now. With the initial releases, my brother was Harry's age so he could relate to Harry's story more that way. I think 10 or 11 is an excellent age to start the series for that reason.

you read the first book when you were in second grade?! you must have been such a great reader ahhaha

haha my teacher forced me, just me :( but then i continued reading the rest of them :)

At first I just borrowed but the owner just get it from me and said He doesn't want anyone to borrow his books.. So I ask my aunt if I could have one book of Harry Potter on my birthday. Surprisingly she gave me a whole box w/ DVDs . It was one unforgettable moment. (just sharing).
Actually, I saw all the movies first. When i was in 2nd grade, i went to a birthday party to go see Chamber of Secrets. Back then, i was terrified of everything, and that movie scared the #@(& out of me. I was literally hiding under my seat at one point. After that, i avoided all things HP until fifth grade, when these two girls at camp i was friends with kept talking about it. I watched all the movies after that, but still wasn't in the mood to read the books
After seeing the 6th one in theaters, though, i knew i was missing out on a lot. I was cat-sitting that summer, and the family i was cat-sitting for had the entire collection, so every time i went over there, i read another chapter or two of the first two books. After that, i just borrowed the rest from my grandma.

I started watching the films when I was about 9. I watched the first 2 films and then I asked my mum if I could read the books. She got the first one for me but I decided I diddn't want to read it. I can't remember seeing the 3rd film when I was younger but remember seeing a clip of Goblet of fire and getting scared thinking Harry was going to drown. I then gave up until just recently, so thats about 5 years later. I suddenly decided about a month before Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2 was coming out in the cinema that I would watch the films. Then about a week ago I got the first 2 books out of the library, but I have to wait untill after my holiday to get the next few out.

I have read them all before their film was released
and to this day, these are my favourite books and pride myself in my vast knowledge of it
a Potterhead through and through :)

For Christmas, I asked my uncle and aunt to give me a Harry Potter book. I thought they were giving me a copy of the Sorcerer's Stone but instead I received the Chamber of Secrets; which was totally cool since I was able to move ahead with the story.
I read the whole thing during Christmas day.
I spent the rest of grade school borrowing Prisoner of Azkaban and Goblet of Fire from my classmates. It was only until High School that I actually read Order of the Phoenix and Sorcerer's Stone.
Christmas of my junior year, I received a copy of Half-Blood Prince from my aunt.
A few months after Deathly Hallows was released, I asked my grandmother to grab me a copy. She did. :)
