Anny (annyreads) I read the first book around the time that the second was released. I remember it very clearly. I was 11 years old at the time. I hadn't really been interested before, it so happens that my classmate quoted a part to me where you had to tickle doors to open them, and for some reason this really bugged me. I was a huge fan of books in general, just not these books.
Anyway I decided when seeing the hype about the second book that they can't be THAT bad if everyone loves them, why not give them a shot. I begged my mother to buy me the first one at a grocery store, and she did.

I remember I read like a 3rd of the book on the way home from the store (my mother stopped to give the car a wash).
And that, my friends, is when I knew my life had change.

Little did I know that I would 6 years later sit in a car home, reading the last book in the series, feeling like my childhood was really over at last.

Mickey | 52 comments I read the series when I was in my late 20's. I had seen the movie Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and didn't think much of it. It seemed like a typical kid's movie about wizardry-a fantasy that would appeal to kids. I was studying Russian at the time and wanted to get some children's books to practice. The Harry Potter series in Russian was easily available, so I bought them and read them. The first three were alright. The fourth book of the series when when I started really enjoying the books for their content. Starting with the 5th book, I switched to English so I could read faster. I had to wait along with everyone else for the rest of the books to be published (which was torture)!

gam s (Haveyouread.bkk) (siyxx) | 3 comments I was in 4th grade. My cousin came to our house one day with Philosopher's Stone clutched in one hand (translated version). She wasn't really reading it, though, so I just asked her what's it about. The next thing I knew I finished 2/3 of it when my aunt told my cousin it's time for them to go home! I was really into the hook by that time so I was extremely upset!

A few weeks later I finally got book 1-3 in my possession and I swore I was the happiest kid in Bangkok that day. Not so long after my mom became a fan as well, and we took turns reading the newly release HP book ever since :D

It wasn't until 2008 that I was confidence enough to start reading real books in English. HP series was one of the firsts I buried my nose in after my English book binge-reading spree begun that year. I must tell you, I would never ever be able to translate as good as the woman who did the Thai version, but then reading the original words from J K Rowling...oh my god, that was a totally different experience for me. I love HP even more!

message 255: by purplebookworm (new)

purplebookworm (puplebookworm) I read all of them before I saw the movies and once I saw Snape on the cover of the third movie and thought he was professor Lupin.

I read the first and second book in third grade, the fourth book in fifth grade, and the fifth, sixth, and seventh book in sixth grade.

message 256: by Bonny (new)

Bonny (bonnyblue) | 1 comments I got Sorcerer's Stone in 1999 for my 13th birthday. It wasn't until Harry Potter that I truly loved reading

message 257: by Emily (new)

Emily | 14 comments M forth grade teacher stated reading it and i was very interested
but before that i did not want to read it.

message 258: by Claudia (new)

Claudia (prismpretty) | 2 comments I remember my fourth grade teacher reading it to the class when we had a free moment. I myself did not read them until much later. I'm actually still reading them. I have two more to go.

message 259: by [deleted user] (new)

I think I first started reading the books when I was about 7,
and not in order at ALL..
I think it went something like this: 5,1,2,7,3,6..?
I only started reading them because my cousin forgot to take it back after a visit from a million miles away..

message 260: by Liam (new)

Liam I was a bit behind the times. Only read them when I was 15, about a year ago now. Well, how much a year can change things!!!!! Now I own all 7 books, all 8 movies, the three companion books, a few tee shirts, a Golden Snitch, a pack of Harry Potter playing cards, and a Ravenclaw emblem coin. In 1 year, I've collected that. From no Harry Potter to all out HP!!!!

message 261: by [deleted user] (new)

Cool! I always wanted a snitch! :)

message 262: by Gillian (new)

Gillian (gilliaaanm) I was six (2005 or 2006) when I started reading Harry Potter. My aunt suggested it to my dad, even making my cousin to lend his books to us. We read it together. We took turns in reading chapters, and if there were ideas or words that I couldn't understand, he'd explain them. We finished in 2007, and the only copy we bought was the 7th book when it came out. I just bought my own set this year, and I am so happy. Haha. It was a great bonding experience, and it started my love for books. :)

It's plastic, but it would make a good dashboard ornament xD

message 264: by Sonja (new)

Sonja (sonjarebekka) I was 8. Ive read them about 7 times. Love them every time

message 265: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca | 2 comments Either Summer 2013 or Summer 2014... I was in a bookstore and you can freely read books there. I saw the first book on a shelf and took it out to read it (out of curiosity) and I loved The Philosopher's Stone from its very first sentence. We had to leave and I was so sad to put back the book in its proper shelf. I actually VOWED to continue reading the book, one day...and yet, here I am.

message 266: by Skyla (new)

Skyla (starrify-everything) | 3 comments I got the books just after my 11th birthday (july), and read them over the summer holidays more than once. I'd watched all the films (some for the first time) the year before on boxset and became attached to them and thought it was good time to read the books. It was probably the second proper books that I'd read (the first being the hunger games trilogy) and without them I don't think I would've been into reading as much as I am now.

message 267: by Carrie (new)

Carrie Dunaway I was 23 and a friend had taken me to see the Sorcerer's Stone. We left the movie theater and went straight to the book store and bought the book. The next day, after reading all night, I was back at the book store to get the next three.

message 268: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Nardei | 2 comments I actually just started the series about 2 months ago. I'm reading the Prisoner of Azkaban right now, about 70 pages in. I'm in love with it.

message 269: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarahpotempa) | 18 comments Believe it or not, I started late. Well I had 3 kids by the time HP & the Sorcerer's (Philosopher's) Stone came out. I was sitting in my Shakespearean Lit class when I over heard two students talking about the biggest book series ever. Later on I started hearing a lot about Harry Potter. I eventually decided that even though the books were geared towards kids I wanted to see what they were all about. I instantly fell in love with them!

message 270: by Nora (new)

Nora (effervescentphilanthropist) I believe I was about 8 when I read Sorcerer's Stone for the first time. I had seen the trailer for the first movie and immediately wanted to get in on it before it was released. I remember there being something so hypnotizing about the original poster that I KNEW I was in store for something special. I was glued to the hammock on our porch for the rest of the summer <3 Nothing was the same since.

message 271: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin Hewitt | 1 comments i read harry potter when i was 11

message 272: by Nitzan (new)

Nitzan Schwarz (nitzanafterwords) I first read Harry Potter when I was 7 years old, in 2001, right after the first movie came out. I had tried reading it a year before but had a hard time getting past the first two chapters (they were too slow for my six years old brain haha) but the movie really piqued my interests up and then I couldn't figure out why I stopped in the first place it was so magical!

message 273: by Ahana~ (new)

Ahana~ (kingahana) Mom bought me the first two books during summer holidays, when I was 11 and I was so excited to start it!

message 274: by Camilla (last edited Jun 02, 2016 07:39AM) (new)

Camilla (camill_la_baguette) I first read the philosophers stone when I was around 7, and started the chamber of secrets after, but I didn't really appreciate them or enjoy them too much, I think I was too young. But I went back a couple years later and couldn't put them down. I really wanted to watch all the films as well, but my mum wouldn't let me watch the film until I had read the matching book. It was really annoying at the time, but now I'm glad that I can say that I read the books first, I think when we read something without watching the film, it gives us a chance to imagine it ourselves to our greatest extend, rather than picturing specifically young Daniel Radcliffe chasing after Tom Felton on a broom.

message 275: by Matt (new)

Matt Wells | 32 comments I first read Harry Potter when I was around 8 to 9 years old. The first book I read was Prisoner of Azkaban. I remember, taking that book with me wherever I went.

After the fifth grade
11 and I was convinced I was going to get my acceptance letter from Hogwarts that summer
Yes
I watched the first 2 movies before I was allowed to read the books

message 286: by Noah (new)

Noah (teatalksreadsbooks) | 8 comments It's been enjoyable to read different people's HP stories. Even though we all came to the series at different points, it's brilliant to see how united everyone is in terms of admiration for the series and J.K. Rowling.

Personally, I think I tried first tried reading Harry Potter aged 6 or 7 (so 2007-2008) but found the vocabulary too hard. Then I tried again aged 8 I believe (2009-ish) and was hooked. The story, the language, the characters, the magic made me love the series. I then watched the films and, though I found Voldemort a tad scary in Philsopher's Stone, really enjoyed it.

Over the last few months, I have been getting back into Harry Potter and have been rewatching the films with my family. It made me realize how wonderful the series was and I felt like a child again. I found some old reading records where I was reading the complete series for the third time in March 2011 (aged 9). It was wonderful to read my comments.

Overall, the Harry Potter series series has been such an important part of getting me to read. I think physical literature (as opposed to Kindles) is so so important. It's pleasing that many people will have began, and hopefully continue, their love of reading through the truly unique Harry Potter universe.

message 287: by Sara (new)

Sara | 5 comments Not that Long ago actually, I think When I was 14 and now I'm almost 16 so I was one of The Very late ones.

message 288: by Natasha (new)

Natasha Niezgoda (natasha_ann) | 1 comments Geez... 18 years ago! I started in 1999 when the third book came out and read the first three like wild fire over summer break.

I remember waiting in line for Deathly Hallows the night before a plane flight so that I could read it on the plane the next day.

Gosh I wish I could relive the first time reading these books again. So good!

message 289: by Ennamora (new)

Ennamora | 3 comments I read them earlier this year. I was 25 and read them in order.
Read them in a few weeks because I really loved the movies and fell in love with the books after reading the first line.

message 290: by [deleted user] (new)

I read them when I was around 8 years old. after I took my dad's movies and watched them in my living room

Cath (amongbooks_) | 9 comments I read them earlier this year (in September) and I am in love with them.

message 292: by Ana (new)

Ana (anaswriting) | 2 comments I first read it in 2013-ish? It was during summer vacations and I was hooked. I remember staying up late to watch the movies and read the books. It was enthralling! I wish I could do it all over again.

message 293: by C (new)

C | 52 comments When I was 9, back in summer of 2011. My older sister had been bugging me to try the series, and I finally decided to and checked it out from the library.

message 294: by Dana-Rae (new)

Dana-Rae (danarae_tibbetts) I started reading them in elementary school after I had seen some of the movies, become an instant favorite and I read them all in order over and over again

message 295: by jessica ☾ (new)

jessica ☾ (jez_the_bookworm) My Mom always read them to me growing up, but I finally read them on my own in fifth grade (It took me forever to get around to picking them up, because ironically, I used to loathe reading). I believe I had only watched the first three movies at that point.

message 296: by Captain Nemo (new)

Captain Nemo (The Demigod Slytherin Who Drives A Jeep) | 9 comments Third grade. I started with Chamber of Secrets since it was the smallest books available and my not-yet-nerdy self didn’t know how series worked and didn’t like large books(even though the books don’t seem so long now!) I went in and read the rest in order then finished with Sorcerer’s Stone. I recently got the UK set for Christmas and I love them so much! Also I refer to the first book as Philosopher’s Stone but I’m in the US so I First read that version.

message 297: by Julia (new)

Julia | 180 comments When I was about 6 my Dad read me the first book because I loved the movie so much. Then he read me the rest of the series (only the first four books had been released at that point), so I knew them quite well by the time the movies came around. I guess I read the first four myself between ages 7 and 8, because I know I read the first Inkheart book at age 9 after I had finished the first few Harry Potter books. I got the fifth book for my 7th birthday, the sixth for my 9th birthday, and the seventh for my 11th birthday (almost as good as my Hogwarts letter that never came that day!) and my Dad read them all to me again for the first time, and then I read them all again myself shortly after.

message 298: by Elysse (new)

Elysse (compulsivereadersblog) | 2 comments I read them for the first time over the summer actually! I am 23 years old (was technically 22 at the time). I had tried to read them when I was a child, around age 6 or so, because some of the advanced kids were reading them, and I failed miserably at understanding the content. I was really upset about it, and didn't pick them up again until my boyfriend told me he could not marry me had I never read Harry Potter. I'm very glad he said that, because I had no idea what I was missing. I'd seen the movies throughout the years, so I did know a bit of the plot, but only surface level. The books took me back to being a child, and restored in me that fantasy and ability to let go and immerse myself into something. I wish I'd read sooner, but also am glad I had some childhood saved for adulthood.

message 299: by Saira (new)

Saira (hissams) | 6 comments I don't even remember when i started reading harry potter and slowly it became my childhood. i just remember reading the books again and again. Watching movies to relate what i had read and sometimes reading books and imagining the same people in the movie. I used to day dream that i got selected in hogwarts and can actually have such perfect friends, and we would be doing everything together, caring for each other, going on adventures, eating till our stomach is bursting. What we all had in our childhood is surely something really special.

message 300: by Natalie (new)

Natalie (meseckuu) | 4 comments I started when I was 10. My teacher was stressing out cos I didn't want to read anything, then she offered me Harry Potter. I whizzed through the first two, then shortly after Azkaban came out, which I also consumed. The rest is history.
