Charlotte (blondebookworm) | 2 comments ive always loved reading, ever since i can remember. Erm i remember reading Jane Eyre in year 6 and it was like the proudest moment of my life to read something like that at age 11 :D. I stopped reading so much when i was about 13-14 but im hooked again!

message 202: by Emily (new)

Emily Lawson Mum used to force me to read when I was younger, I read a proper book when I was about 10, I enjoyed it but not enough to carry on reading.
Then when I was 13 my brother bought me a YA novel for my birthday and I loved it, never going to stop reading again:)

message 203: by Megan (new)

Megan Ayres I've been a bit of a book hoarder since I was little, but I started reading teenage fiction and eventually I had a small wall shelf full of books. I was going through I hard time and reading really helped. I bought the Twilight books and started liking fantasy/sci-fi/supernatural YA books and now I have two three shelf cases and one floor to ceiling one. :)

message 204: by Alivia (new)

Alivia Anders (aliviaanders) | 6 comments I used to be a huge manga nut (those Japanese comic books, so to speak) and that kept me as close to books as possible until 6-8th grade. Our Middle School did something called a Read-On every year, and for a few months you read as much as you could and for every so many pages you were entered in for a drawing of prizes. 6th grade I won a jar of candy. 7th grade I took a third of the prizes home, and 8th grade I lost for most read by roughly 20 pages.

Since then I've been a madhouse reader. I'll read anything as long as it's words and as long as it's tasteful. But YA is where my heart is.

A.Roma 🇵🇸 (man-u4kb) | 87 comments My class forced me! and im glad they did! at the time i was like..'no man readings boring, ive got a life..' but now i feel like books are my life! by the way my first book was Twilight! a boring start lol!

message 209: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 5 comments I first started reading when I was 3. Actually, funny story... my dad was in the emergency room (he broke his finger) and I picked up a children's book in the waiting room that I'd never seen before and started reading it... my mom was amazed haha. Ever since then, I've been a total book nerd and cannot stop. :P

message 210: by chinami (new)

chinami | 794 comments I love to listen to stories. That's how i ended up reading books on my own rather than listening to mom reading it. It dates back to childhood and i still love to listen to anyone who can tell me a good one :D

message 211: by hadia (new)

hadia (hadzz-bookeater) | 6 comments I used to hate reading, thought it was a waste of time. My friend got me started. And once I did, I couldn't or didn't want to stop :)

Rebecca dunagan (serenity_dunagan) | 89 comments i have always liked to read. when i was a child, i would read short books, never more then 300 pages. then, 5yrs ago my aunt was diagnosed with cancer. she was my gardian at the time. after she died, i was put in counseling, for i was depressed. my solution? reading. and that is what i did. that year, i read over 200 books, all quite long. since then, i always have a book, it is how i cope.

I'm so sorry to hear about your aunt :( Reading can really help, it takes your mind off other thoughts.

message 217: by Katrina (new)

Katrina Welsh (katrinawelsh_) I was pretty much anti-reading when I was younger. Mostly because I lived in the Philippines and libraries and reading wasn't really that big then. The only books we had at home were textbooks from school and my dad made us read a couple of pages every couple of days. It was horrible and that's probably the root of my hatred for books.
Then, we moved to NZ and there were libraries everywhere. My dad used to be an avid reader so he got us library cards and encouraged us to read. I was a little overwhelmed at first and didn't know what to pick up. I figured, since I was liked the Harry Potter movies, I might as well read the books. I loved the story and when I finished them, I branched out to other genres. HP introduced me to the joys of reading and I am forever thankful. I love reading and I don't even remember what I used to do with my time before I read.

message 218: by Mara (new)

Mara (maraanne) Honestly, I started "actually reading" as soon as I learned how to read. At first, I didn't want to learn how to read because I didn't want my parents to stop reading out loud to me, but once I started being able to read virtually on my own, I fell in love with books. I didn't have anyone my age to play with when I was little - I mean, I played with my siblings, but they had their own friends, being older - so books became a refuge.

message 219: by David (new)

David Estes (davidestesbooks) | 350 comments I don't know why, but I always loved to read. I give much of the credit to my mom, who used to read to us all the time, but as soon as I could read on my own I began devouring books. I even won a reading competition in 4th grade by reading 72 books during the first 3 months of the school year LOL I have been reading-obsessed ever since :)

LOL, I have a thing for numbers as well as words. I remember the oddest statistics sometimes ha! I was so proud of myself, I got a cut out of a footprint for each book I read and my mom and I had to sign it pledging that I read the book written on the footprint. Then I got to stick it on this big wall LOL I had so many more than all the other kids haha! Even back then, I was a big dork!

message 221: by David (new)

David Estes (davidestesbooks) | 350 comments LOL definitely!! Although I don't think it was nearly as cool to be a dork back then LOL Nowadays it feels much more cool which is awesome!

message 222: by David (new)

David Estes (davidestesbooks) | 350 comments @Glenda- that's amazing!! I think it helps there are shows like Glee on the air that embrace individuality and differences in people being positive.

@Kyle- I love it!! Yes, that's what it's all about. People of all ages having good self-esteem regardless of what their personalities are. It's all about embracing the good in all types of people :)

LOL, wow, you were addicted so early! I think I got addicted at age 7 or 8 :) I got hooked on Lord of the Rings :)

message 226: by Johns (new)

Johns Hmm. Funny story, actually. I was in fifth grade and I wanted a book on my level to read so I could pass the quarter. I picked up the City Of Ember and fell. In. LOVE! Then I read the second.. Then the third.. And finally the fourth. They were so good I had my friends read them and they ADORED them! And they hate to read.

message 227: by David (new)

David Estes (davidestesbooks) | 350 comments Lol that's awesome!! Love stories like that :). Some people just don't realize how awesome reading is until someone forces them try it hehe :)

message 228: by Daisya (new)

Daisya Spencer (daisya19) No one in my family likes to read except for my uncle on my dad's side of the family. Except he nor my other family members encouraged me to read books. So basically I told myself to read a book and I'm only 15, weird huh!! :)

message 229: by Jen (new)

Jen (jensuazo) I'm actually the only one who first started reading in my family then soon after my sister joined in

message 230: by Pam (new)

Pam Wetterman | 1 comments My mother took me to the library every Saturday for story hour. I became a fulltime reader as a teen.

My babies were read to beginning around the age of one month. Both are masters level graduates and continue to read today. We are a reading family.

message 231: by David (new)

David Estes (davidestesbooks) | 350 comments That's the cool thing, whether you come from a "reading family" or not, everyone can make the choice to start reading and then pass the love down on to their own families :)

message 232: by Katrina (new)

Katrina Welsh (katrinawelsh_) I know what you mean, David. I've got a list of books that I have to get so i can read them to my children and get them interested in reading early on. I can't believe I had wasted so much of my time not reading.

message 233: by Bee (new)

Bee (jubileee) | 17 comments I started reading when I was 9 or 10 years old. I was actually influenced by a friend of mine in school. She was reading this really thick book and I asked her how she was able to read a thick book with small font size! The book she was holding was Inkheart by Cornelia Funke. I got interested because she kept saying that it was a good book and reading is a lot of fun. Back then, I was a total lazy person when it comes to reading. She encouraged me to read Geronimo Stilton books in our library. I don't know why I got really obsessed with those books. They were the books that had me started reading. They were a lot of fun until I decided to read Inkheart, too and began to read a lot of other books especially Harry Potter which is my favorite series of all. The 7 books were the first books I had in my collection. :)

message 234: by Kristine (new)

Kristine C Frost (kcstrife) Jude, you and I almost had the same story.

I only started reading on my High School years and that's 4 years ago.
I was in First year and Twilight was so popular that I borrowed one and read it, and from then on, I continued reading the whole saga.

But it was only on my Senior year that I became "obsessed" on reading fiction books. I prefer reading fiction books more than the educational books at school.

And from then on, I loved reading, mostly Romance,Young-Adult,Sci-fi and Chick-lits :)

message 235: by trav (new)

trav | 61 comments This librarian came up to me and put The Alchemist in my face and told me this is just right for me! I gave it a chance because, before I read that book, I thought reading was stupid, waste of time, and did nothing to impact your life! Once I read the Alchemist series I had the complete opposite opinion on books!

That's how it all started for me :)

message 236: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) I was always a comic lover and moved to real books when HP came out. I got the first book from a teacher at the time since she knew of JKR from University and wanted to support her.

I was really young at the time so read it rather slowly but it started me reading :D

message 237: by Marchell (new)

Marchell i have dyslexias so i hated reading!I i couldn't stand it right until i started to read my Friend flica ( as i love horses and animals) and true passion for it or obsession of it started in high school

message 238: by [deleted user] (new)

I've always been a pretty avid reader from a young age, like 6 or 7. For fifth and sixth grade I went to this verrry small school (there were 8 kids in my grade, and about 70 in the entire school, grades Kindergarten through 8th grade) where the learning was pretty relaxed, the work was creative and laidback, and there was a great library in each classroom. The 7th and 8th grade teacher had the biggest library and she too was always encouraging her students (and all of the kids in the school) to read.

They didn't give much homework at this school so I spent my spare time (apart from sports and other activities) reading, so those two years I reallllyy like reading. Even though I had already read a LOT before, I started to read even more. I have a friend who, before she came to the school, never picked up a book unless she was forced to, but when she came to the school she started reading like crazy!

message 239: by Saki (new)

Saki (parthenekelos) | 10 comments I started reading comic books in my mother tongue when I was 5 yr old.when I was in middle school I started reading English story books.then when I was in clg I got this friend who introduced me to the world of English novels, from there I found my way to YA am so glad now ;)

message 241: by rai ♡ (last edited Aug 21, 2012 07:39PM) (new)

rai ♡ | 1032 comments I read story books in elementary school (but then I preferred watching tapes a little more), didn't read anything in fifth grade, and since sixth grade I've been addicted to reading romance/adventure/supernatural books. Books for me in sixth grade were a way for me to escape everyday life when it became too oppressing or boring. It helped me imagine a more exciting life outside of my routine life. And today, it still does that for me. I'll be forever hooked .

Ishita (weirdtalkingdragon) | 13 comments Everyone in my family's a bookworm, so I guess it was in my genes. I don't even remember my first book - it's like I've been reading since forever. I've been a member of two libraries since I was 4.

message 243: by Nitzan (new)

Nitzan Schwarz (nitzanafterwords) Reading has always been in my blood. I started reading on my own when I was around five or six year old, and it has remained my passion since then.
I started really reading books in English (since it's not my language) when Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows came out because I couldn't wait for it to be translated. Since then I read almost only in English!

message 244: by Katie (last edited Sep 09, 2012 07:07AM) (new)

Katie (kayteaface) I've always been very big into reading. Since a young age, my parents and grandparents encouraged me to read and I'd read anything I could get my hands on. I remember reading The Selfish Giant to my aunt when I was about four years old. By the time I was seven, I had the reading capability of a thirteen year old. Then, when I was eight, I got Harry Potter 1 - 4 for my birthday and I powered through them, and they're the books I have to thank for turning me into a complete bookworm :')

Same here! I was very advanced for my age.

message 247: by Nitzan (new)

Nitzan Schwarz (nitzanafterwords) I self-taught myself English at a young age by watching movies with subtitles (always loved other languages!), and later on at school I studied it as another language, yes. But mostly it was from what I learned by myself; I was always way ahead of class when it came to English (mostly I didn't feel like I was doing much in class. Rarely listened, just wrote stories or read, but the teachers had no problems with that cause I got 100s.)
I never read much in English before the seventh Harry Potter book because there aren't many books in English available here, especially not books teens would like :/ And now I rarely read in my own language.

And I did.

That was sixteen years ago.

I have been an avid reader ever since.

English is like my native language. I know it better than my actual mother tongue (which is sad, I know). I don't generally read Hindi books, except for class.
