Becca (beccatheawesomeone) | 71 comments The funny thing is, three months later, I refused to read to the baby. I think I was under the impressio he was stealing my mommy. I haven't read him a story since then. But I love to read to my other siblings!

I am just kind of stubbornly judgemental like that.

Yeah, I also know English better than my actual language... and yeah, it's sad. But can anyone really blame us? I, for one, simply find English somewhat... beautiful. I don't know if others will agree, but I really do.
But I still probably know my own language better than most my age (they don't read. Like... EVER! I bring a book to class and they freakin' ask me "what's that!" and I'm like "...it's a book. Never seen one?")
So, yeah. I know English better, but I'm in a pretty good level in my own compared to others.

Becca (beccatheawesomeone) | 71 comments What language do you speak Nitzan.

I xan truthfully say that I have always thought other languages are way more beautiful than Emglish. Bit maybe thats becausw I am a born English speaker. Except it sounds pretty with an accent!

Its fun meeting people who speaj a completely different language. It gives me a sense of cultural connection.

message 254: by Ishita (new)

Ishita (weirdtalkingdragon) | 13 comments Yep. People stopped writing in Hindi, I think. There are no new books. We still read poems written before Independence in class. God.
I know my language VERY well, and so does everyone else. Just, not as good as English.
All books I want to read are in English.

I think you're right! Other languages like Spanish, Japanese, or maybe Urdu are much more beautiful :)

Lol, that's so funny! I have a brother seven years old younger and we don't get along. I was an only child, and then he came along.... so I think I get the whole "stealing my mommy" feeling. You sound like an adorable child!

message 257: by Nitzan (new)

Nitzan Schwarz (nitzanafterwords) I speak Hebrew :) (sorry, computer messed up the group so it didn't show me the question ;xD)
I find Japanese beautiful, as well, and Spanish sexy xD
But I have a very warm place for English, and because I'm NOT for an English speaking country, I find it beautiful. And very expressive!

message 258: by Ikao (new)

Ikao (ikaoduck) I and my little sister watched Hunger Games and we both love it. My sister wanted to buy the books and I just joined her. I didn't have much interest on books that time, but when I read it, I just couldn't stop and finnished all the books. And my sister haven't done Mockingjay. Looks like she bought it for me and now I become a reader XD

message 259: by Brie (new)

Brie (brielikestoread) | 2 comments I loved reading books as a kid. We had AR and all kinds of awards for it. So I always wanted to get my picture on the wall and win as many rewards as possible. So i read a lot (one year I hit 150 books) and then in 3rd grade they started cutting back on the budget for school

And by the end of 3rd grade they closed the school library and only used it 1 day of the week. We didn't do AR anymore and instead did AM(for math instead of reading). And we were discouraged from fictional books (because "they provide no educational value").

By 5th grade they cut out literature all together.

I didn't touch a book that wasn't a text book for the next few years and started reading again in 8th grade. The Hunger Games was what brought me back to reading :)

message 260: by [deleted user] (new)

I got into reading when my teacher read the book touching spirit bear. and then i started reading books like crazy. i have a pile of books in my room and i'm currently reading like 5 books right now. so little time...

message 261: by [deleted user] (new)

Ive been reading since I was a little girl. Id always been advanced for my age, but the book that really led me to the addicted reader I am today is Little House on the Prairie. I started in grade two, and can still remember little parts of the book.
Since then, I've never had a day where I hadn't had a book on the go.
I think my mom is sorry for introducing me to that series.

message 262: by Rincess (new)

Rincess I started with manga. Then with fanfics. Then with YA. And now with YA and horror. Fun right? =))

message 263: by Lizzie (last edited Feb 02, 2013 08:16PM) (new)

Lizzie (tatteredtink) | 87 comments I've always been a big reader, use to hide my books inside my textbooks during school. Started with Nancy Drew and goose bumps, lol. Then as I got older I ended up raiding my moms old trunk and read a bunch of her old book, and got real into Stephen King. Now I just hit the YA section at the library and read whatever looks good.

message 264: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (thebtwjournals) My parents would always read to me there was nothing better and as I got older it just became natural I never really think about reading its second nature<3

message 265: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (adtrrachel) I used to HATE reading! My mom actually paid me to read! Then, all of a sudden, it was like a switch was flipped, I could not stop reading!

Irene ~ Witchy Reads (witchyreads) | 52 comments In Dutch I have been reading since I was about 8 or 9. I started reading in English when I went to Canada in 2004, in class we read Shakespeare's Macbeth, Catcher In the Rye (which I loved as well as shakespeare). I re-read the HP series in English then followed by LOTR which was a though read for me back then. After I returned to the Netherlands, I kept reading in English to keep up with my English.

message 267: by River (new)

River (respire) When I was younger my dad used to tell me stories his dad had told him when he was younger, sometimes he'd read from books too. When I started to learn how to read at school I really got into the reading and I would go to the library every week with my mom and borrowed around four/five books. All childeren books though. When I got older I was more interesting in books about people my own age and their lifes at school, their friends etc. Now and then I still read some fairy tales because I really liked them.

I started reading English books when I was 13 years old (I'm from Holland), my first book I read in English was Twilight, my older sister had accidentally bought the English version of it instead of Dutch. My English back then wasn't really good, but I still understood most of it. After that I didn't read English books untill that summer. I though why not buy some English books and try if I understand it. So I bought and borrowed some from the library and began to read. After that I've never read (okay unless it's for school) another Dutch book. Hell, I can't even stand to read Dutch books anymore.

:)

It's funny you mentioned Twilight as the first English book, it wasn't my first english though but it got me back to reading English books and explore the Fantasy genre further, because most of the fantasy writers are English (cant think of any dutch except Paul van Loon maybe) I dont read Dutch any more.

I have this rule, when a writer writes in English I read the book in English, when a writer is dutch Ill read it in Dutch (doesn't happen that often anymore).

Nice to meet a fellow Dutchie btw!

message 269: by Skaistė (last edited Feb 24, 2013 12:36PM) (new)

Skaistė Girtienė Oh, I started reading since I've learned to read. I was about five years old then.

My mother tells I learned to read while trying to learn to play the piano. You know there is text written in syllables in the music sheets. So it was easer to read. Though my piano lessons didn't go that well. It has ended quite soon but I still have some hope to learn someday.

I think there were more than that behind my learning to read. My mother used to read stories to me and my sister before going to bed. I loved it but wanted to hear more or to read more stories myself. So I had quite a big motivation. The piano lessons came in handy.

Reading was always valuable in my family and it was quite easy to get something interesting to read or to buy something new. So I've been an avid reader since :)

message 270: by Arielle (new)

Arielle Well, I started reading around the age of 5. But it was only small picture books I would read at night with my mom. But the thing was, I hated reading. I seriously did.

For school I would have to read at least 30 minutes a day, and I had to be forced to "read" when all I really did was stare at a page for 30 minutes.

Then around fourth grade I think, I read the last Percy Jackson book. (Yeah, I know, read the books in order) From that I was hooked. As soon as I was done with the last one I read the whole series obsessively, and then some.

Ever since I read the Percy Jackson series, I now have to be told to read less. Oh how the tables have turned! :P

rai ♡ | 1032 comments My sister gave me her R.L. Stine and Christopher Pike books during the summer before sixth grade and I haven't been able to stop since. Years later, now I've moved from suspense/scary murder mysteries to paranormal, steampunk, and dystopian action packed-romances like:

The Girl in the Steel Corset (Steampunk Chronicles, #1) by Kady Cross The Iron King (The Iron Fey, #1) by Julie Kagawa Vampire Academy (Vampire Academy, #1) by Richelle Mead Bloodlines (Bloodlines, #1) by Richelle Mead Half-Blood (Covenant, #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout Obsidian (Lux, #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, #1) by Cassandra Clare The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games #1) by Suzanne Collins Gone (Gone, #1) by Michael Grant The Darkest Minds (The Darkest Minds, #1) by Alexandra Bracken

message 275: by V (new)

V (ariellathefirequeen) | 84 comments My adoptive parents (the parents that adopted me, from India, when I was three and a half) divorced when I was about 6. To say my adoptive "father" is an a$$ would be accurate. In 6th grade, I had to start visiting him at his house for three hours. I brought books to escape, so I wouldn't have to listen to him. I've been hooked ever since. :)
Before 6th grade, I wasn't really a reader. Sure, I liked to have books read to me, better never really loved reading them to myself.

To those who learned English to read... wow! I am completely in awe of you! Lol. The English language is so hard to learn, with all the silent letters and such.

And if you find the English language beautiful, well, I have to say I disagree. There are languages that are prettier. :)

message 276: by Özgecan (new)

Özgecan (ozgecan) | 133 comments I think my fascination with books began before I learned how to read. My mom’d read a lot of books to me when I was little and I knew every one of them by heart and could tell what it says on each page. Some people thought I knew how to read but it was just memorization.
After I learned how to read my dad'd buy a lot of books and one day he brougt home the first movie of Harry Potter and after that my childhood was full of HP but to be honest I still read the books and watch the movies now and then. I think this series is like a classic among its own kind and I dont think it will ever get old. And HP also helped me with english. I remember spending all my time watching the films and in time reading the books and trying to understand what it says. I have always loved english but HP made me love it all the more.
And finally I learned about Young Adult genre thanks to Twilight series and have been reading it ever since. I read other genres too but I like ya the most.

Maira | 516 comments my sister was a book adict and i used to see her and wonder what she found in books so interesting that she actually can not put them down. then one day when i was in 4th grade i picked up her harry potter book and started reading after that moment i cannot put the book down and since then iam a book addict. :)

message 278: by Mary (new)

Mary | 4 comments When I had like 6 my dad got me some picture books and I was so obsessed with them but when I grew up and I never got other books, it just wasn't my thing and when I had like 11 years I saw a book in a webpage that really catched my attention so I said why not? I should try reading books and now Im obsessed

message 279: by Taylor (new)

Taylor Marsh (tall_tails) | 26 comments I love reading everyone's story :) So cool how we all stumble into it :)

My grade 2 primary teacher was off sick for 2 weeks and the substitute teacher that took our class decided to read us Harry Potter for story time. By the end of that first chapter I was hook and practically begged my Mum for the first book :) and I now I can't keep my nose out of them...

message 280: by Özgecan (new)

Özgecan (ozgecan) | 133 comments It seems like Harry Potter played an important role in the reading adventure of most of us.

message 281: by Talbie D (new)

Talbie D (talbiedoodle) | 28 comments I also was never much of a reader until saw the first Twilight movie. Before then I hated reading because I was so bad at it and had to have a lot of extra help with it. Then I fell in love with the movie and went home and read all the books in two weeks. My mom was so shocked to see me reading she took a hundred pictures and took me out to buy me a fancy bookmark :) After the Twilight books I read The Host and suddenly realized I loved reading and as a result, I became a good reader. I soon didn't need extra reading help and now I love reading more then anything.

message 282: by Jessica's Reads (new)

Jessica's Reads (jessicas_reads) I bought my first book when i was around 14. it was the first novel of the sookie stackhouse series. Dead until Dark and j read the first couple pages, but the i put it on my bookshelf for about a year because i was not great at reading. That year i got help to read better and i read that book and now i cant stop i have all 12 books from Charlaine Harris and more.

message 283: by Kaitlyn (new)

Kaitlyn | 235 comments I don't even remember... I've always loved reading! I started "obsessively reading" (for lack of better phrase) last summer when I went to the library to find books to read to pass the time. My first book there was beastly... It hasn't even been a year yet and I've already read 163 books:)

message 284: by Haley (new)

Haley | 11 comments Well for me, I have really bad dyslexia so I never read. But in the 4th grade I joined a special reading class that helped me so much. The first book I remember reading all the way through is "My Brother Sam Is Dead" sad story but it got me to like books. But I started reading manga and the basically backwards reading made it so easy to read. From there I went into young adult books and I haven't stopped :)

message 285: by ♥ Ashleigh ♥ (last edited May 11, 2013 01:17AM) (new)

♥ Ashleigh ♥ Contrary to popular belief I'm not actually mad! (cheshire_red) for me it started just after I finished high school, I was bored with nothing to do and recalled a few of my friends getting super sucked into books while at school and thought why not, so I went to the library and had a love affair every since :P
after reading the Vampire Academy series I knew I would never stop reading.

message 286: by Nordlys (new)

Nordlys My mom and grandmother used to read to me as a child, and as soon as I could read myself, I did. I have always loved it, and in school I would join every reading competition we had. And me and my friend used to go to the public library and take as many books as we could, filling up bags. We finally realized that there is a limit to how many books one can read in the time the library lets you keep them;)

English is not my language, but I started reading books in English in primary school as so much just gets lost in translation. I started with the Harry Potter books, as they were fairly easy to read. I tried the Hobbit in English back then as well, but that proved to be a little too hard.

Irena BookDustMagic | 54 comments when i was a kid i liked to pretend i was reading. people around me thought smart and intelligent children are readers so my father bought a membership card for library and i went there at least once a week. but i almost never read books. just borrow them and then turning them back and acting all smart. i was actually good at fooling my parents and my teachers.

then in the high school i started hanging out with a girl who always wrote something. in her notebook she was writting a soap opera that was really interesting. so i got hooked. and then she recommended princess diaries to me and then i discovered sophie kinsella and i started reading for real.

but it was 2 and a half years since now when i REALLY started to read. i god car accident as a foot passenger and got some bad injuries so i was immobile and in the bed all the time for almost 2 months and one of my friends bought me a book vampire academy spirit bound and i liked it so much i had to read the rest of the books of the series. then i got unearthly, shiver and i actually discovered a whole new world in those books. since then i'm reading every single day.

message 288: by Beneatha (new)

Beneatha | 6 comments my mom used to read to me before i could even talk. i didnt understand obviously but she said i would bring books to her and turn the pages. I read The Land in the third grade and by the sixth grafe i had a 12th grade reading level. I read almost everyday and in my free time. I'm that girl in class that pulls out a book when im done with my work:-)

message 289: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Shahruddin (shahannah) | 24 comments I sound similar to the person above me.

My said she always read when she was 'feeding' me as a baby. She says it encourage me to read or something. I used to read as a child - all those kiddy books.

But what I really remember my grandpa bought my Harry Potter book when i was 14. He told me everyone on UK would line up for it but at the time in Malaysia no one knows much about Harry Potter. So he got me the first and second book. From there I remember reading loads of book.

message 290: by Kaity (new)

Kaity (i-love-books-because-reasons) I always loved reading, but I don't think I became a book-a-holic until I was twelve when I got my first Nancy Drew book and my first Magic Tree House book.

message 291: by Harlee (new)

Harlee I started when I was still in elementary school and I LOVED Horrible Harry books. I had a whole collection of them. Then it evolved into reading my older brother's books which were Captain Underpants and a couple books here and there from school. In high school was when I really became obsessed. Like many others, I read the Twilight books but it was when I was at the movie theater when I saw the trailer for the Percy Jackson Lightning Thief movie. It said it was based on a book and I thought that looks pretty good (sooo wrong) but I looked up the book, bought it, and from that moment on I became a book freak. I would take books with me everywhere and I had a couple cool teachers that would let me use my kindle during free time, so I always had it with me to read on. I am now a proud book addict and I know I'm going to be a reader for the rest of my life <3

message 292: by Sydney (new)

Sydney Lee Robinson (procrastinatingbookworm) When I was little, I HATED reading. And none of my teachers could get me to love it or like it in any way. Then, in 6th grade, one of my reading teachers read The Maze Runner by James Dashner. And everything changed. I REALLY LOVED reading. And before I knew it, I had over 2000 books on my to read list.
Well, that's my story!

message 293: by Hannah (new)

Hannah | 5 comments My mum read to me all the time when I was a baby. One night she was too tired to read a bedtime story, so I thought,"Hmm. Mum can do it. So I can too!" Then I picked up the book and slowly read it. Yup. I was 18 months old, and since then, I love to read!

message 294: by Alan (new)

Alan Summers | 4 comments As my kids were growing up I wanted to make sure I understood their interests and things they were learning. Once my oldest started reading the Harry Potter series, before book two was out, I was hooked.

message 295: by Keith (new)

Keith (keeiith) | 26 comments I started reading because of twilight! I was so curious to know what happened after the 2nd movie. So I decided to buy the book and read it, after that I'm not quite sure what happened, though all I remember are tons of book, amazing stories and me going crazy whenever there's a new release or found a book that I really love especially if it has a gorgeous man as a main character involved haha!. aaah the memories <3 LOL

message 296: by Zouagie (new)

Zouagie | 12 comments I remember reading since kindergarten, but I didn't start loving it until I started second grade. My parents would drop me and my brother at the library to finish our homework, and when we finish, me and him would skim the aisle and pick the most pretty books. Then we read the pretty books, and it started into a family thing. I loved it and it blossomed into a reading addiction.

message 297: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth I have two ways. One my uncle sat on the floor with me when i was a baby and pointed to the words in a picture book. The other is when i was six i asked my grandma what her fav book was when she was my age and she said Black Beauty and Jane Eyre. That summer we went to Haworth where the Bronte sisters lived and i got my first copy of Jane Eyre. It was the child's copy that i still have and i fell in love with reading and the Bronte's after that.

message 299: by Fifth Horseman (last edited Mar 17, 2014 02:40AM) (new)

Fifth Horseman (fifthhorseman) I confess, I wasn't big on reading in my early years. It wasn't until I was 13 that I really started loving books and novels. I think it was Percy Jackson that introduced me to the book world and then the Hunger Games that turned me into a full-on book nerd. Now I can't go a week without reading something :)

Bella Marie (bittenpillows) | 23 comments At college Manfredi was my favourite. After college I was reading arlekin and stuff like that. When I read new moon after watching twilight I started reading young adult books.
