Beatrice (beatricemasalunga) I started reading when I was in Elementary school. I don't really read novels before, I am more of short stories such as "True Philippine Ghost Stories" and I used to collect them before. Then, my grandma gave me my "Heidi" by Johanna Spyri and started reading that (though it took me 3 weeks to finish it). What really made me into a bookworm was when I've read "Harry Potter"

It's also the first series that I owned.

Andrea As soon as I learned to read I started visiting the library. One of my best memories of school was my third grade teacher reading us A Wrinkle in Time. I absolutely loved it.I read all the typical books for my age at the time from Nancy Drew, The Boxcar Children, The Bobbbsey Twins to the Outsiders, Judy Blume, V.C. Andrews and on and on.

K.D. McQuain (kd_mcquain) | 14 comments I developed my love for reading with fantasy comics like Conan, Red Sonja and Warlord. I later had parent assigned reading lists to complete over the summer, one of the fist that really impacted me was The Book Of Three by Lloyd Alexander. After reading the whole series I had the opportinity to meet him at a local children's book store where he was holding a signing. Since then I have been reading voraciously my whole life.

Sumiyya Abdul-Rasheed (ssbookworm97) | 21 comments I learned to read at nearly 4 years old but I didn't really like to until 5 or 6 years old when I started reading the Junie B Jones series and loved it. I would read those all the time and then when I was 8 I moved from Johannesburg to Newcastle/Kwazulu-natal we would go to the library there and I would read more stuff. My favorite series were Junie B. Jones(still) and Babysitter's Club: Little Sisters. Then as I got older I read a series called The Amazing Days of Abby Hayes. I've always read series more than novels but I did enjoy those as well. So yeah, basically I've been reading since 5 years old all thanks to the awesome, funny series Junie B Jones.

Alyssa At one point in my life I read a lot. Elementary-Middle School since we would have a day to go to Library to find a book to read. After that in High School at the moment I stopped. I still read but mostly like the books they make us read in English like 1984, The Catcher in The Rye, Romeo & Juliet, Caesar, etc. Otherwise, I rarely went to the school library. The library in my school does not really have a good amount of books. Just the basic kind for class, and manh few others for people to read, but it's a small library. Now I kind of want to get back into reading, so I joined GoodReads. I'm started to read more books, and adding eBooks into folder so I can read them later. I've already read two books in two days. I'm excited to start reading more!

Nesha When I was a kid...I LOVED to read. I would wait up for my dad every night and he would read me stories and pretty soon I started to memorize every book he read. Once I learned to read on my own, there was no stopping me. I felt like Matilda! Lol! Then suddenly out of nowhere, without even realizing it...I had stopped reading. It had been almost three years since I picked up a book. One day during my sophmore year of high school, I'll never forget my Spanish teacher saying "You kids these days don't read enough"! I remember being highly offended because I read ALL the time...and then I thought..."oh wait a second, no I dont read all the time. I used to but I don't anymore". From then on I've never stopped. I went to our school library that day and picked up a couple of books. It was in high school that I discovered that I'm a sucker for romance novels. Nora Roberts is my favorite romance novelist. Been a bookworm ever since! A co-worker told me about GoodReads and my book obsession has only gotten worse. I read 2-3 books at a time now and I love it!

Lennie Daluz (lenniedaluz) | 29 comments We had a lot of books at home-Bible stories, children's dictionaries, encyclopedias and stuff..so those actually got me started. Of course, I needed the help of the pictures when I was younger, and those helped me a lot. When I went to primary school, I started reading various stories-Heidi, Anne of Green Gables-even short series books like Magic Tree House and The Adventures of Mary Kate and Ashley. By the end of elementary school, I was reading The Twilight Saga. Of course, I had since found better books but it was reallythe series that got me started on serious reading. BTW, I am Filipino and English is my second language. :)

Jaz Mirza (sammoonlight20) | 10 comments I was born and raised in America but English is my third language. my parents are from Pakistan so they taught me two languages spoken there, which I also speak at home, and I was put in ELL classes to learn English. I did not rally enjoy reading...but then I picked up a book in 7th titled, Dead is the New Black by Marlene Perez and fell in love. Since then, I've picked up every book that interested me. I started reading other YA genre books and just fell in love, and this is how I started reading.

Toodles!

Jacqueline Buan (jackiesbookcorner) | 132 comments I was at a hotel checking out my new phone. I was bored so I decided to check out the preview of The Fault in Our Stars and fell in love with it so I bought the whole book and from there I just got hooked on reading. Haha I guess I can thank John Green for my appreciation of books haha.

Lan Kiều | 10 comments I started at around 10. The first thing I read was a Vietnamese translation of The Neverending Story. My mom works for a publishing house, so she gets a yearly book allowance from them, and since I practically swallowed the book in two days, she brings home some more! Since then, most of her allowance goes into my books :D My mother decided that I was officially a bookworm :D

And when I was 14, I was given a copy of The Hunger Games (in English) and I got so hooked up that I started whining for the next one! Of course, I got it :D Ever since I couldn't stop reading English books because, hey, they are the originals, so it's better to read them than wait the whole year for the translation :D Even so, the wait for an unfinished series is just as torturous!

Pam Williams | 76 comments My older sister got tired of having to read to me so she taught me to read when I was 4. I'm 56 now and still going strong. I work in a middle school library and like to read a little bit of everything. Adult, young adult, juvenile, you name it. My favorite part of my job is recommending books to readers (especially reluctant readers). It's so much fun to see someone connect with a book and want more!

❀ kitty bennet ❀ (brinneyy) | 1 comments Up until I was fourteen, I never touched books (like novels) (unless it's for school) and only read from my never-ending pile of magazine issues. Soon enough, my english teacher told the class to review a favourite book of ours. I was flustered due to the appalling fact that I did not have a single fictional book in the house or any kind of books (unless you are talking about the latest issue of Seventeen or my mum's encyclopaedia collection) and it was unfortunate because I also avoided libraries like the plague hahaha (outrageous i know). I assume luck was on my side because my little sister, who was only 12 at that time, came back with a recently released book written by Victoria Forester entitled 'The Girl Who Could Fly' (PURE COINCIDENCE I SWEAR). At that time, my intentions were to copy the review on to the slides and present it to the class in that manner. But what got me reading was because of the positive reviews about the book on Goodreads. Even though I possessed a mild distaste for reading novels/chaptered books, I must readily admit that 'The Girl Who Could Fly' sparked my interest in reading and the activity became my new pastime!!! YAY!! So I googled for similars and went book shopping. I still steer clear of libraries bc I bear a slight dislike for that place (unless i have a research paper to complete). So I buy my books instead. Now, I am sitting in my room almost four years later with more than 200 books on my shelf (ugh i'm pathetic) and having more fictional crushes than magazines I own (and trust me that's like counting sand in the beach).

Despite being an avid reader now, I still h8 english bc math ftw

:: there's a personal reason to why i avoid libraries so no hate okay??

Kinsey (goodreadscomsunset3446) | 4 comments I was in Kindergarten and absolutely despised learning to read -- mainly out loud. You see, the problem was, I already knew how to read. At least internally. And it annoyed me to know end that the other kids kept stumbling over words like bathroom. I just refused to read aloud, and it was hindering me because the teachers didn't know how to get me to do my work.
So finally my dad handed me a magic treehouse book and told me that if i found it boring I wouldn't have to read aloud, as long as I read the book. So I read it and loved it, and continued to devour books till this day.

M. Austin | 5 comments I can't remember anything before Roald Dahl. Ok, so I vaguely recall some fairies and flying wishing chairs, but the first books that actually affected my reading habits were Matilda, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach etc, which I read with my mum. Then I discovered this little book series called Harry Potter...

message 319: by Dasha (new)

Dasha (dashunka) | 16 comments I started to read in grade five because we had literature circles and there were really good books. I never read anything before. I don't know what I would be doing if I wasn't reading.

message 320: by Cesca (last edited Jul 23, 2015 10:57PM) (new)

Cesca (ultimatebookdigger) | 28 comments Okay. I never liked reading at all until middle school because I possibly couldn't and wouldn't try to understand what I was reading and I believed that it was the most tedious thing to do. Like, I just scanned the pages and the words without putting it in my head and it was such the worse thing ever. Heck, I even got through a book without understanding it at all.

Fortunately, the moment came when I realized it was time for a good change and try to help myself through reading a nice book, so I started my first one, which was one of the series of Magic Tree House called, Tigers at Twilight by Mary Pope Osborne and it was hell of a good piece. It wasn't even mine and had forgotten to return it to the owner. There I started my journey to the world of reading. :)

message 321: by Zouagie (new)

Zouagie | 12 comments I never truly appreciated a book until my older sister dropped one into my hands for her school project when I was in kindergarten. She said for me to read with her so she won't be lonely and me being the one to want to follow her, took her up on her offer. Ever since then, I have never looked back, would constantly come home with a new book from school.

There were times while I was growing up where I have to struggle with finding out what genres I was more into. It was so hard I honestly thought that I didn't love books anymore!! Thank goodness I found out what I loved before I regret it.
