Genia Lukin Paul-
Once I am further in, I will be able to say for certain. So far, the narrative is definitely unique, but not impossible to follow.

How far are you on A Wizard of Earthsea?"

Both books in Earthsea was a one day reading through, so I finished Wizard of Earthsea the day I made this thread, the other the next day.

I loved them, and I even saw the anime that was made back in 2006 called Tales of Earthsea, but I have not read the other three books after the original trilogy.

message 57: by Dylan (new)

Dylan (coban3) Continue reading them! Soooo good

I know, I love all the books by Ursula K. Le Guin.

message 59: by Julia (last edited May 06, 2011 12:29PM) (new)

Julia | 957 comments Currently reading and enjoyingDraw One in the Dark. Before that I read Beauty Queens which I loved and Unfallen Dead.
I've got two challenges to finish: Q & A, Torn, The Scorpion's Gate, Krik? Krak!, Sovay, Play Dead, and Feed.
And several library books A Northern Light, Harlem is Nowhere: A Journey to the Mecca of Black America, Flight,Face.

message 60: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin (beniowa79) | 383 comments I finished The Alehouse Murders by Maureen Ash. It's the first book in a series called Templar Knights Mystery and it was a decent historical mystery. I plan to look for the second book the next time I'm in the bookstore.

Next up is The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin.

message 61: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat I started What Dreams May Come last night.

Loved the Left Hand of Darkness. Excellent story. I'm about to start Fahrenheit 451 and have moved Opening Atlantis to be my downstairs book..

message 63: by Genia (new)

Genia Lukin Just finished Martin Amis's Time's Arrow. personally, I thought it was very good. I have some quibbles with the book, but I enjoyed it, and did not find it at all impossible to parse.

message 64: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat It's one of my favorites :)

You ever read any of Le Guin's stuff before?

message 66: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin (beniowa79) | 383 comments Dylan wrote: "You ever read any of Le Guin's stuff before? "

I read the first Earthsea book years ago, but I didn't care for it. I read Lavinia when it came out and loved it.

I had to put down The Left Hand of Darkness thanks to a printing error. The book jumps from page 16 to page 49. Guess I'll have to look for another edition.

message 67: by Julia (new)

Julia | 957 comments Benjamin,

It may be the copy and not the edition. Can you return it?

message 68: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin (beniowa79) | 383 comments Yeah, I meant copy, not edition. Minor brain fart there. :P

But no, it's been too long since I bought it. I'll just be careful to check the book next time.

message 69: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth | 1 comments I'm on the lookout for some good new fantasy. Right now, I have Stormfront (first book in the Dresden files series) on the to do list, and I'm sort of picking my way through Assassin's Apprentice. I'm not sure how much I enjoy the latter though.

message 70: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (kevinhallock) | 60 comments I just finished "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks." It's one of those books that highlights how life can sometimes be stranger than fiction.

message 71: by Trevor (new)

Trevor (clevtrev) | 38 comments The Left Hand of Darkness was an unusual experience for me. I feel like it was a good book but I didn't really enjoy reading it. I found it to be thought provoking but not entirely my cup of tea.

I'm going to finish up the coldfire trilogy with Crown of Shadows.

message 72: by Tyson (new)

Tyson Adams | 1 comments I realised that I have a pile of indie and trad sci-fi books in my to-read piles (Kindle and dead tree), yet I haven't read any sci-fi yet this year. Strangely I've been reading mostly thrillers. The closest I've gotten is techno-thrillers by James Rollins and I suppose Michael R Hicks' Season of the Harvest and the short Eight O'Clock in the Morning would be regarded as sci-fi.

message 73: by [deleted user] (new)

having read nothing but fiction this year i decided to dive into Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid which has been on my BR pile for 6 months or more. It's going to take some work! Even the introdution is thought-provoking.

message 74: by Dan (new)

Dan Schwent (akagunslinger) I'm reading The City & The City by China Mieville at the moment. After that, I'll probably read Hespira by Matthew Hughes, Rendezvous with Rama by Arthur C. Clarke, and one of the Bizarro Starter Kits.

message 75: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (versusthesiren) Just finished Thorn Queen - I didn't think it really compared to Storm Born at first, but it picked up very well at the end. Yay!

Trying to decide whether to finish up The Left Hand of Darkness or Archangel's Consort before starting Territory.

message 76: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Cotterill (rachelcotterill) I'm in the middle of three: The Jennifer Morgue, The Iron King and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. All enjoyable so far, but very different styles so I can switch around depending on my mood.

message 77: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin (beniowa79) | 383 comments Since I couldn't read Left Hand of Darkness I read The Word for World is Forest instead. It was fairly good.

I'm now going to start my planned re-read of ASOIAF with A Game of Thrones!

message 78: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat I think my boyfriend and I are starting that reread today as well.

That is one of my favorite books, which reminds me that I have to go click "I want this book on Kindle" link at amazon again ...

Make sure that you take time to digest the vignettes that begin each chapter before you move on.

I FINALLY finished Vanity Fair after spending more than a month slogging through it and can finally read other things ... so on to Beneath The Bleeding by Val McDermid.

message 80: by Raymond (new)

Raymond (peerl) | 1 comments Just started reading The Harvest by Robert Charles Wilson. I'm a big fan of this author, having read a few of his books more than once. Just finished Blind Lake for the second time and I'm looking forward to the new book, Vortex, the third book in his Spin trilogy.

The Harvest

Justin (jdiddyesquire) | 4 comments Genia wrote: "Started Martin Amis' Time's Arrow. So far it's been a surprisingly fascinating read."

Interesting what happens when an author says to himself, "I bet I can do_______." I read Time's Arrow in college. It was my first exposure to modern lit.

It's fascinating, although calling it a... "good" book is kind of hard right?

message 82: by Genia (new)

Genia Lukin I'm not sure. It certainly isn't flawless. I felt that, as an experiment, he got carried away too much with detail at the beginning and forgot the crux of his novel was a Holocaust novel. But the language was good, the reading was comprehensible and easy, and it had its won charm in the exercise. I'd put it down as a decent book, and a rather cool experiment.

message 83: by Richard (new)

Richard Knaak (richardknaak) | 17 comments Harry Turtledove is one of my favorite. Just starting Ruled Britannia.

message 84: by Scott (new)

Scott | 152 comments I finished Red yesterday. It ended in a cliffhanger. I'll have to finish the trilogy soon.

Then I started Hearts In Atlantis.

Finished This Perfect Day last night/this morning. Probably start The Black Company later today.

whimsicalmeerkat @Carey lulz

@Ala Way to go on This Perfect Day. Hopefully you'll find The Black Company a different sort of read than I did.

message 89: by [deleted user] (new)

I finally had some time last night to really read, and then I couldn't stop. Stayed up late just to finish it.

Oooh, my favorite series! So good. Tales from Earthsea wasn't as great, though.

Have you read her sci-fi? I'm not too keen on it, but I've only read two of her books in that genre.

Did you also read The Other Wind ? That one came after Tales from Eartsea and i really liked it!

Ive only read one of her sci-fi, The Left Hand of Darkness and i really liked it, i just ordered The Dispossessed: An Ambiguous Utopia by her so im hoping that one is just as good! Which ones did you read?

message 92: by Trevor (new)

Trevor (clevtrev) | 38 comments Finished Crown of Shadows. I won't ever call this series a favorite of mine but it was an entertaining enough read. I also read Ted Chiang's The Lifecycle of Software Objects which was released for free online. It was very interesting stuff and I ended up reading it in one sitting.

Next up will be The Deed of Paksenarrion by Elizabeth Moon.

Stephanie (misprintedpages) | 11 comments Dylan wrote: Did you also read The Other Wind ? That one came after Tales from Eartsea and i really liked..."

Mhm! I read the whole series. So good.

I read The Left Hand of Darkness and part of The Dispossessed: An Ambiguous Utopia. Just a warning: it's very slow. I hated it. The Left Hand of Darkness wasn't too bad, though.

message 94: by Dylan (new)

Dylan (coban3) whyd you stop reading it?

message 95: by Stephanie (last edited May 12, 2011 07:01PM) (new)

Stephanie (misprintedpages) | 11 comments Because it didn't feel like it was going anywhere. It was so slow and boring.

message 96: by Stuart (new)

Stuart (asfus) | 183 comments I am reading Engleby by Sebastian Faulks

message 97: by Mariah (new)

Mariah (caelesti) | 46 comments I finished Melting Stonesby Tamora Pierce awhile ago, (a book set in her Circle of Magic universe) It's about a young stone mage- pretty original, but you might not care for it if you don't like talking rocks!
I am almost done with Hastur Lord Marion Zimmer Bradley's last Darkover book, edited & fleshed out by Deborah J. Ross after she died. It's quite a suspenseful & gripping story. As usual with Darkover books, its something of a political soap opera. After that, I will probably continue with the YA Young Wizards series, with Wizard's Holiday the 7th book.

Sweet!

And speaking of which, I just finished A Game of Thrones earlier this evening. It was a real pleasure to read it again.

Before jumping into Clash, I'll take a break with a book or two starting with Journey to the Centre of the Earth by Jules Verne.
